GARTER-SUPEORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 19, 1921.
Application filed April 2, 1919. Serial No. 286,910.
T 0 alllwhom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, JOHN STERN, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garter-Supports, of which the following is a specification; v
T he invention relates in generalto a part of a garter support of the type which includes a pin or bar element and the invenrelates to the part of the which includes the means tab or fabtion specifically garter support for attaching the pin to a tape, ric part.
In childrens iuiderwaists, Ferris waists and the like there is formed at present a pin carrying tubular part and .an extension provided with a slot through which the fab:
ric tab is looped. This, construction is ob jectionable in practical use for the free sliding movement of the tubular part on the tab not infrequently cuts through the tab and even if it does not cut the tab, the fab.-
ric material frequently collects at one end of the slot, wrinkling the material and lothe garter.
Accordingly, the primary object of the invention is to' provide a pin receiving tubular element which can be permanently fixed in place on the tab with economy both in the amount of material used and in the labor necessary to affix the same to the fabric tab.
Various other-objects and advantages of the invention will be in part obvious from an inspection of the accompanying drawings and in part will be more fully set forth in the following particular description of one form of mechanism embodying my invention, and the invention also consists in certain new and novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of the lower side portion of a childs undergarment, showing a garter supporting tab with a preferred embodiment of tion affixed thereto;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the unbent metal blank for forming the pin tube;
Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of part of the supporting fabric tab with its usual lapped edges; I
Fig. 4 is a similar view of the tab shown in Fig. 3 with the plate of Fig.2 having its I the tab 11, shown in my invengdkges' lapped about opposite edges of the a I Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are sectional views respectively of the device in the corresponding F1gs.2, 3 and 1; I
Figs. 8 and 9 are front and an end elevational views, respectively, of the device shown in Figs. 4: and 7 bent at right angles to the position shown in these figures; and
Fig. 10 is a view in end elevation of the completed pin tube shown in Fig. 1.
In the following description and in the claims, parts will be identified by specific names for convenience of expression butthey are intended to be as generic in their application to similar parts as the art will permit.
In the drawings, there is shown an article of apparel 10 to which is attached a tab 11, the lower end of which is looped through a pin tube 12 constituting the subject-matter of this invention.
It is understood that this pin tube is for the purpose of receiving the pin element of any conventional form of garter or other supporting device. It is obvious, however, that the device disclosed may be utilized in any similar situation where it is desired to aflix a fastening means to a flexible strip.
The tab together with the pin tube hereinafter more particularly described is fixed thereto and the completed tab and tube sold Defining the process of affixing the sheetmetal blank plate 13 shown in Fig. 2, to i 3 it will be noted that the plate has-a length greater than the width of the tab,'is positioned across the tab as shown in Fig. 1 and the end portions of the plate are bent back upon themselves to form lapped extensions 14. The extensions bite into engagement with the tab to hold the edge portion thereof frictionally to the plate as shown in Fig. 7 and against relative sliding movement. then bent about a medial longitudinal line through the extensions shown in Figs. 8 and 9, past the positions shown in Figs. 8 and 9 and about a forming pin 15 into the final tubular position s own in Figs. 1 and 10. I
There is thus formed a one-piece eye tube 16 with the end extensions 14: forming a double thickness at opposite ends of the tucombination of a flexible tab, a rectangular one-piece metal plate having a lengthbular part. As the periphery of the tube is less than the width of the plate, as shown in Fig. 10, there is provided a pair-of lateral extensions 17 projecting radially from one side of the tubular part asshown in Figs. 1 and 10.
As it is possible to attach the metal plate and form the device as shown in Fig. 1 with two stamping operations, a material saving in labor over the old threading method is effected, and as all of the metal plate is utilized a saving in material is also effected. Primarily, the device is an improvement over known similar devices in that the edges of the tab are held against slipping and thus wear on the tab is re duced to a minimum. As the end of the tubular part is of a doublethickness of metal, these endsare thus reinforced to withstand bending strains .of the pin element of the garter and provides a stiff reinforcing tube with but small additional material. The outer face of'the device part metal and therefore wear on the fabric part of the support is reduced so that the tab V has a longer life than similar devices in which the fabric tab is entirely exposed.
tain novel features of my invention, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in the form and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I A
claim:
.1. In a device of the class described, the
greater than the width of the tab and with the two end portions lapped back upon themselves with the edges of the tab held therebetween and said plate doubled back upon itself along a medial longitudinal line to form a tube adapted to receive a pin.
2. A pin support including a flexible tab bent back upon itself to form a loop, a onepiece-metal eye-tube secured in said loop against relative movement, the end portions of the tube being of double thickness with the edges of the tab held between the two thicknesses of metal.
8. A one-piece-sheet metal pin tube constituting part of a garter support and comprising an open end tubular part adapted to receive a pinelement of the garter, said tubular part having extensions at opposite ends thereof to form a double thickness of material at the ends of the tube and to receive a fabric tab between the double thickness. 7 A l 4:. A one-piece-sheet metal pin tube constituting part of a garter support and com- "ends thereof to form a double thickness of material at the ends of the tube andiadapted to receive a fabric tab betweenthe double thickness and lateral extensions projecting from the side of said tubular part. 7
5. A pin tube constituting part of a garter support and comprising an open end tubular WVhile I have shown and descrlbed, and have pointed out in the annexed claims, cerpart adapted to receive a pin element of the garter, a pail-of longitudinal extensions projecting radially from the side of the tubular part and adapted to receive a fabric tab therebetween. V
6. A pin tube constituting'part of a garter support and comprising an open end tubular part adapted to receive a pin element of the garter, a pair of longitudinal extensions projecting radially from the side of the tubular part and adapted to receive a fabric tab therebetween, another extension facing one of the radially projecting extensions and constituting a means for securing a fiexible tab between the extensions;
Signed at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New JOHN STERN.
