Be it known that' I, GEORGE COOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carrollton, in the countyof Carroll and "State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Road Scraping, Gradlng,
This invention relates to roadscraping, grading and ditching machines,,and consists essentially of features of improvement based on the structure of the machine disclosed .b m Patent No..1,265,702, dated May 7, v 1918, and which will be more fully hereinafter described andclaiined. The main object ofthe invention sto generally improve this particular type of machine in such manner as to more effec tively perform the operations .ofroad scraping, grading and ditching; to increase the strength and durability ofthe machine and provide for more convenient and expeditious assemblage of the parts, particularly those connecting the share or blade and the runner: or slide. A further object of the invention is toprovide' an adjustable attachment in connection with therearend of'the share or mold board for the purposeof making said share or mold board quickly shed dirt or soil andalso to facilitate the formation of terraces of any shape and In the drawings r I Figure 1 is a perspective view of a machine embodying the featuresof the invention. v
Fig. 2 is a top planfview of the improved machine. s j j Fig. 3 is-a transverse vertical section taken in the plane of the line 3'3, -.Fig. 2. Fig; 4: is a transverse iverticalsection taken in the plane ofthe line44c, Fig. 2.
Fig; 5 is, aldetailperspective view of a As in my patented machine hereinbefore which serves as a mold board,- a runneror slide 6 and a draftbar f Th e. shareior I nold board 5 has a concave-convex contour in cross section with t'he concave side8 1out-- side, This shareor mold board 5 hasupper and lower similar straight edges9 and 10 Application filed August 2, 1919. which are adapted to serve as cutting means and project beyond or in advance of the front end of the share ormold board with an intervening clear space 13 between them, the said points 11 and 12 beingconcavoand Ditching Machines, of which the follow- Y convex in cross sectional contour and removing is a specification.
ably boltdto the mold board, as at 14. The I 'sllde 6' is vertically straight with upper and lower similar longitudinally straight workinged ges 15 and 16. Thefrontend or the SlIdG'lS-IOllGd to form knucklesor cuffs 17 I which are disposed between upper and lower angle brackets 18 securedfto. the inner side ofthe front extremity 'ofithe mold board 5, an d extending through the said brackets and lniuckles or cuffs 17 is a pintle bolt 19 to form va hinge connection between the front ends ofthe mold board and slide. By I {HQ/(111$ ofthe hinge connectlon ust-explained y r the moldboard 5 maybeadjusted as desired relatively tothe slide 6, and tomaintain: the
adjustment of the mold board the inner side of the slide has a longitudinally disposed keeper bar 20' secured thereto by angle brackets 21,.said barbeing provided with plurality of openings '22, therein to adjustably receive aqcoupling bolt 23 inserted through the end of a connecting rod or bar 24 which is. attached to r the slide ,6 in as jmanner presentlyexplained.
The draft bar 7 preferably consists of a asdesired. The inner end of the draft bar has a klluckleor cuff 26 which is attached to the center of the pintlej-bolt 19between the knuckles or cuffs 18 at the front endof the Slide 6. The bar 7 extends horizontally. outwardfrom the pintle bolt 19, or the front hinged ends of the mold board and slide, and 7 tothe'outer end thereof a draft rod 27 isse- I cured: and extends ,rearwardly and curves: g I around and atja distance fromtherear end mentioned the essential components or the improvedmachine are a share or blade 5 of the mold board 5 and then projects forwardly and inwardly toward and secured to the saidmold board in'a preferred particular manner; The rod 27 fully clears the [outer concave 'workingfside of the mold board 5 as well as the rear end 'ofthe latter and does not inthe least interferewith the movementof the orsoil over the mold board. The draft rod 27 transmits the draft pull to and operates to steady the mold board and reliably and positively holds the same upto the work, and thereby an advantageous guiding and truing action ensues when a cut is made by the cutting points 11 and 12.
Oneof the special features of improvement consists of an arch or bridge bracket 28 secured to and extending vertically relatively to the inner side of the mold board 5. The end of the connecting rod or bar 24: opposite that adjustably engaging the keeper bar 20 is bifurcated orformed with a fork 29, and the members of this'fork respec-- tively partially embrace and are pivoted to the members of the bracket 28 and are free to move on the latter which serves as a fulcrum projection. The draftrod 27 extends through thefork 29 and is preferably secured to the center or apex of the bridge or arch bracket 28 by a suitable clip or analogous device 30, the said rod 27 continuing in advance of the bracket 28 and riveted or bolted to the mold board 5 as at 31. This particular attached association of therod 27 with the mold board 5 results in an effective distribution of the sustaining and draft functions of the said rod relatively to the mold board.
A further special feature of improvement in the present machine consists of an adjustable wheel or roller attachment at the rear extremity of the mold board 5 to facilitate shedding of dirt or soil by said board and provide for the formation of terraces of any shape desired, either high or low and narrow or wide. This attachment comprises a vertical guide 32 securedto the mold board 5 and having upper and lower set screws 33. Slidably mounted in the guide 32 are two reversely arranged shanks or stems 34; and 35 respectively carryin a wheel or roller 36 and 37 to project a ove and below the upper and lower edgesof the mold board. By loosening the adjusting screws 33 the shanks or stems 34 and 35 with their wheels or rollers 36 and 37 may be raised or lowered and set in the adjusted position desired by tightening the saidscrews.
The improved machine may be overturned or reversed bodily by detaching the draft of the latter, the said strips curving outwardly from the share or blade edges and having a slight yielding action. These drags operate similarlyto the wheels or rollers, or, have a like function. What is claimed as new is 1. A road scraping, grading and ditching machine comprising a mold board provided with upper and lower cutting points at its front end and with a bridge bracket at the inner side of its rear end, a slide hinged at itsfront end to the similar end of the mold board, the mold board and slide bothhaving upper and lower working edges to render the samereversible, a draft bar connected to the front extremities of the mold board and slide. and a draft rod secured to the outer end of the draft bar and extending around the, rear end ofthe mold board and secured to the said bridge bracket and the mold board in advance of the bracket.
2. A road scraping, grading and ditching machine comprising a mold board provided with upper and lower cutting points at its front end and with a bridge bracket at the inner side of its rear end, a slide hinged at its front end to the similar end of the mold board, the mold board and slide both having upper and lower working edges to render the same reversible, a longitudinal keeper bar secured to the inner side of the slide, a connecting rod having a bifurcated end pivoted to the bridge bracket and adjustably attached to the keeper bar, a draft bar connected to the front extremities of the mold board andslide, and a draft rod secured to the draft bar and extending around the rear end of the mold board and through the bifurcated end of the connecting rod, the draft rod being secured to the bridge bracket.

l. A road scraping, grading and ditching machine, comprising a mold board provided 'samereversible, means adjustably connecting the said mold board and slide, the inner side of the rear extremity of themoldbo'ard being provided with a bracket, and vertically disposed stems reversely and adjustably engaging the said bracket and having wheels in their opposite ends projecting above and belowthe upper and lower edges of the mold board, each wheel and its stem being adjustable independently'of the re-i maining wheel and stem to vary the projec tions of the wheels above and below the upper and lower edges of the mold board,
