Specification of Letters Patent. Pat-,gutted Margo 299 192i,
Application tiled July 19, 1920., Serial No. 397,312.
To all 'wko/m, t may concern Be it known that l, Born SUMMERS, a'
citizen of the United States of America,
- and resident of Columbus, in the county of vention also contemplating the provision of ynovel means whereby the center or given point of a circle or square object having a flat surface can be indicated and determined in inches or fractions of inches.
Furthermore, the said device is capable of use as a square or as a scale, or as a marker to draw a line with relation to some object to which the device may be moved.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in t-he details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention'. in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a top plan Viewof a:
measuring device embodying the invention; Fig. 2 illustrates a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; y
illustrates a sectional View on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 illustrates a bottom plan View; i Fig. 5 illustrates a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1; Fig'. 6 illustrates a perspective view of one of the uides, and j Fig. illustrates a perspective view of a punch and center pivot.
in these drawings, 10 denotes the blades of the implement having graduations thereon, it being shown that the blades project from the central portion 11, although preferably the blades are made integral with one another and they can, therefore, be stamped-from a single sheet of metal. The central portion 11 has athreadedaperture 12 which may be adjustably connected to a housing 13 which housing has an externally threaded portion 14 to engage the threads of the blades. A jam or lock nut 15 also engages the threads 14: and may serve to retain the blades in proper position to the housing.
The housing has an apertured base 16, and a -punch 17 projects therethrough, the said punch having an enlarged body 18 slidable in the housing terminating in a head 19 which may be struck for the .purpose of operating the punch. The body 18 has a longitudinally extending groove 20 in its edge to receive a screw 21 which is threaded in the housing, and this screw serves to limit the movement of the punch which punch is held in elevated position by a spring 22 interposed between the bottom, of the hous- -ing and the enlarged portion or body of the punch, 'as fully shown in Fig. 2. When the punch is to be used, it of course must have its lower or outer end'resting on the work to be countersunk lor punched and then the head 19 is struck to produce the countersink or recess which is often used in drilling or as a mark to determine position.
Guidingmembers or slides are applied to the blades and as the guiding member for each blade is of identical structure, a description of one of them will suthce as a disclosure of the remainder. Each guiding member comprises a block of material 23 having a slot 2.4 therein te receive la blade, the said slotbeing intersected by an aperture 25. The wall of the aperture 25 is threaded. at the top and bottom of the guide ment on the blade. This set screw is provided for positively holding the guide at different positions of adjustment, but may be released to permit the guide to slide on the blade.
The guide is held in yieldable engagement with the blade by means of a friction pin 27 which is free to move in the aperfrictional contact between the pin and the blade so that the guide may be free to move and yet befrictionally held in diderent positions of adjustment.
The ides are, vof course, slidable with relation to the blades and their position can be determined by the graduations on the blades.
One of the blades has a pointed stud or marker at or near its end so that if a guide is moved With relation to the end or edge of an object, the marker can be employed for making or indicating a line parallel to the edge engaged by the guide.
By adjusting the guides, the implement can be used as a centering square so that the exact center of a circle or square object having a fiat surface can be determined, as stated, and of course the tool is susceptible of other uses as Will be appreciated by those skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. In a measuring tool, a member having a central portion with a threaded aperture, blades projecting from the central portion, a housing on Which the central portion is threaded, a punch mounted to slide in the housing and projecting through the bottom thereof, guides slidable on the blades, each of said guides comprising a member having a slot to receive a blade and an aperture extending through the body and intersecting the slot, a set screvs7 threaded in one end of the aperture and adapted to bear on a blade, a screw plug inthe opposite end of the aperture, a friction member in the said aperture bearing against a blade, and a yieldable member interposed between the plug and the friction member for urging the friction member into engagement with the blade.
2. In a tool of the character described, graduated blades, guides slidable on the said bla-des, each of the said guides comprising a member havinga slot to receive a blade and an aperture extending through the body and intersecting the slot, a set screw threaded in one end of the aperture and adapted to bear on a blade, a screw plug in the opposite end of the-aperture, a friction member in the said aperture bearing against a blade, and a yieldable member interposed between the plug and the friction member for urging the friction member into enga-gement With the blade.
