FREDRICK RALPH BEMUS, OF MENOMINEE, MICHIGAN.
WRENCBI.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 15, 1921.
' Application filed November 6, 1917. Serial No. 200,494.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnnnnron RALPH Beams, a citizen of the United States, residing at Menominee, in the county of'Menominee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and more particularly to that type or"- wrench which automatically adjusts itself to the several sizes of nuts, bolt heads, or pipes, which the size of the wrench is designed to include; and the object of my improvement is to provide not only a wrench wh ch is automatically adjustable to several sizes of nuts, bolt-heads, or pipes, in one setting, but to provide one which may be re-set and automatically adjust itself to the article to be wrenched; and another object of my improvement is to provide a wrench, the feature of which is that when being operated it will automatically close upon and firmly grip the article to be wrenched so that there will be no danger of it slipping off, or of giving away; and another object, or feature, of my wrench is, thaton reversing the movement of the wrench in the opposite direction than that above mentioned, the wrench will automatically release its hold and act in a manner similar to that of a pipe wrench or tong.
These and other objects of my improvements will he more clearly pointed out in the accompanying drawings, specification and appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1, represents a plan view of my invention with a nut shown between the jaws of the wrench.
Fig. 2, is a side view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, is a plan view of my invention showing the gripping end of the wrench with pipe wrenching or gripping jaws inserted in place of those for nuts, or bolt-heads, as is shown in Fig. 1. The remaining, or handle, portion of the wrench is broken away.
Similar characters referto similar parts throughout the several views.
In the several views, A represents the handle of the wrench; B is a pivoted jaw holder; C is a cooperating ivoted jaw holder; D is a connecting link ingeably secured in the jaw holder C at C and adjustably secured to the pm A in the handle A at A. In the free ends of the respective jaw holders B and C, are hingeably secured jaws E and E at F. The jaw holders B and C are pivotally secured to each other by a fulcrum pin G. Adjustment for larger sized nuts etc., is obtained by removing the pin G from the jaw holders B and C and re lacing said pin G in holes G provided ind? and C. An adjustment hole D is provided in the free end of the link D so that the same relative position of the handle A and the jaw holders B and C may be maintained. When it is desired to make this adjustment, the pin A" is removed from the handle A and replaced therein and through the hole D. From the pin A the handle A is extended a short distance (say about one tenth of the length of the handle end) and pivotally secured to the jaw holder B at B. From the foregoing it will be apparent that when pressure is exerted upon the handle, A, when the wrench is engaging the article to be wrenched, in the direction indicated, this assures the operator against the liability of his becoming injured by the slipping ofl" of the wrench, whereby he might knock himself against something near-by, as is often the case with the present, old style wrenches. It will also be seen that the jaws E being ivotally secured in the jaw holders B and d will readily adjust themselves to various angles, thereby accommodating the several sizes of nuts, colt-heads, etc., which the size of the wrench is designed to include.
Having thus described my invention, the merits of my improvements can be readily understood, and it will be seen that the minor details of my construction may be altered in many ways without departing from the spirit of my invention, but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination in a wrench of the class set forth a pair of intersecting clamping levers, one having a short arm and the other a long arm, the long armed lever being bifurcated, adjustable pivotal means for hingedly connecting the short armed lever within the bifurcated portion of the long armed lever at their points of intersection, a clamping lever operating handle having a bifurcated end to receive the end of the short armed lever, a pivot connecting the bifurcated end of the handle to the short armed lever, a link having one end pivotally connected Within the bifurcated portion at one end of the long" 7 armed lever and having its other end adjustably connected in the bifurcated end of the operating handle, both of said intersecting FREDRICK RALPHHBEMUS.
