ANDREW J. HOLLEMBAOK, OF NORTH BANGOR, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED ILATCI-IES AND LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,723, dated March 11, 1873.
To all Iwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. HoLLEM- BACK, of North Bangor, in the county of Franklin and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Latch and Lock; and I d'o hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of thisl specication, in which my invention is represented by an elevation, the front plate having been removed.
Similar letters of reference in the accompanyin g drawing denote the same parts.
This invention relates to that class of locks and latches 'designed to be used on doors, gates, &c.,which always remain in an uprightposition; and the object of the invention is to provide for the public a combined lock andlatch of that class which shall be less complicated in construction and more easy and noiseless in operation than the common spring locks and latches, and which shall not be liable to get out of order. To this end the invention consists in combiningwith a weighted tumbler a weighted oscillating bolt constructed to operate either as a lock-bolt or as a self-actin g latch, and adapted to be moved by the closing of the door, gate, 8vo., or by the knob, and to be lockedv by the ordinary key or a night-key, and dispensing entirely with the use of springs, substantially as I will now -proceed to describe. In the drawing, A is the case of the lock. B
in g an aperture, c, to receive the bolt to which the door-,knobs are attached, by which the latch is lifted and its lower end drawn back. E is the tumbler, pivoted at d, weighted heavily at f, and provided with two spurs or projections, e el, that engage with the ordinary key g and with another longer spur, e2, that engages with an arm, h, attached to the latch B, the whole being so constructed that when thrown forward to the position in which it locks the door, as shown by the dark lines, the weight f holds it in that position; and when thrown back to unlock the door, as shown by the dotted lines, the weight also holds it in that position without the intervention of a spring; and I is the night-lock, operated by a key in the usual manner, and engaging with a shoulder, t', on the latch to hold it locked, as will be clearly understood from the drawing.
The whole construction is very simple and inexpensive, while the lock thus made is strong and durable, and is adapted not only to doors, &c., inside of a house, but to gates, doors of out-buildings, &c.
I am well aware that a swinging weighted latch has heretofore been employed; also, that a pivoted and balanced tumbler has been used but I am not aware that the two have ever been used in combination with each other.
My invention does not consist in either feature alone, but rather in the adaptation of the various parts to` the successful practical combination of the two features in one lock; and
