Be it known that we, JLTAN 'N'. MUsKIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, and ROBERT B. Cnunr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vest Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and Improved Bathtubs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. n

This invention relates to bath tubs and has particular reference to attachments for bath tubs so designed as to enable a bath tub to be used not only in the vordinary manner for the usual purpose, but also as a combination tub with independent compartments.

Among the objects of the invention is to provide a combination bath tub partition and seat structure hinged to the upper edge of the partition, the said structure being adapted in one position to serve as a seat and in another position to serve as a basin support.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while the invention is not restricted to the exact details of construction disclosed or suggested herein, still for the purpose of illustrating a practical embodiment thereof reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like -reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a bath t'ub showing our improvement.

Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the bath tub with a fragmentary indication of the partition, the section being on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.

Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional detail on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.

Referring now more specifically to the drawings we show a bath tub 10 of any suitable size, structure, or design, but provided with vertical lateral grooves 11 lying in the same plane and merging at the bottom 12 of the tub into an offset 13. Any suitable means may be provided to supply water to the bath tub, and we show at 14 a waste connection leading from the lowest portion of the tub. The arrangement of the offset 13 as indicated in Fig. 1 insures that there can be no stagnant water left in the tub when the waste outlet is opened.

The partition 15 may be made of any suitable construction such as enameled sheet metal or the like of an imperforate nature and including a top bar or rail 16 and a grooved portion 17 extending across the lower edge thereof and upward along the vertical side portions. The groove is preferably undercut slightly as indicated in Fig. 5. The size of the partition approximates the size of the space between the grooves 11 and hence the partition when in place is adapted to lie in the plane above described with the grooved vertical edge portions of the partition in or adjacent to the grooves 11. Any suitable means may be employed to make the edges and bottom of the partition substantially watertight in cooperation with the grooved and offset portion of the tub. To this end we emplo a flexible cushion 18 such as soft ru ber or the like fitted and locked in the undercut groove 17 and extending therefore all the way from the one upper corner of the partition downward across the bottom of the tub and thence upward along the other end of the partition. As thus constructed the partition carrying with it the gasket 18 as a permanent part'of the partition may be slipped downward along the grooves into the position shown, making in effect two independent tubs A and B. lVhen the subdivision of the tub is not desired the partition may obviously be lifted directly out of the position shown and set aside or slipped beneath the tub.

19 indicates a support preferably substantially flat and of any suitable form or design in plan view, the same being hinged at 20 to the rail 16 so that the support may be swung to either side of the partition or made to assume any desired angle with respect thereto.

Any suitable means may be provided to hold that part of the support remote from the partition rail 16 and hinges 20. As indicated at 21 the hinge straps extend across vthe support and terminate in bearings 22 in which is journaled a hanger 23 comprising hooks 24 adapted to engage over the rim 25 of the tub. The vertical distance between the tub rim and the axis of that part of the hangt-r journaled in the bearings 22 is the same whether the support is swung over the tub A or over the tub portion B and Aso the support 19 will be held substantially level in either position. (See Fig. 1). The freedom of the hanger to rotate in its bearings 22 assures that the hooks Qtthereof will always be free to accommodate themselves to the rim of the tub.

The support as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 is adapted for use as a seat so that if one wishes to wash his feet for example in the tub A, he may readily do so with a moderate amount of water. lVhen the support 19 however is swung over to the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 1 it may be used as a wash basin, especially by children who may be unable to reach into the usual or ordinary bath room basin, and the device is shown as including a basin Q6 as a fixture or a part of the support 19 which by reason of the position of the support is located in a convenient place for the use stated. The basin may be attached to the support or it may consist of the support itself with a rim portion formed upon the aforesaid seat or as a single stamping or the like. The bot-` tom of the basin may be provided with a vent 27 adapted to be closed by means of a plug as usual in such devices so that the soiled water may be discharged directly into the portion A. is noted especially in Fig. et the hinge straps 2 1 are preferably recessed into the bottom of the basin or support so as to bring the axes of the bearings all in the same plane as the bottom plate of the basin. Hence the level of the said plate or support will not be disturbed when swung from one side of the partition 15 to the other.

From the foregoing it will be appreciated that we provide a partition for a bath tub enabling one portion thereof to be used independently ofthe other or for both-portions to be used for independent purposes at the same. time. The natures-f1 the Connection between the partition and the main tub is such that leakage is not likely to occur from the tub A outward into the tub B, if the latter is not being used. The device is of a relatively simple nature, and hence may be manufactured and soldat a relatively low cost and is practically indestructible.

The combination with a bath tub, of a partition therefor serving to ysubdivide the tub into two independent portions, 4a support and hinge connections between the. support and the upper portvzionk of thei partition whereby the support may extend' laterally from either side of the partition` and swing 'from one Side to the other.

2. A device as, Set. forth. in claim 1 in which meansy is provided to hold up that portion of the support remote from the partition.

A device as set forth in claim 1 in which there is provided a hanger for holding that portion ofthe support remote from the partition and cooperating with the rim of the tub.
