Be it known that I, ARTHUR C. Jnwn'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shot-Shells; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a view in longitudinal central section, of one form which a flight-marking shot shell embodying my invention may assume.

My invention relates to an improvement in shot shells designed with particular reference to being used in trap-shooting, but not limited to such use, the object being to mark for the guidance of the shooter, the path of the charge of shot, especially during the initial and significant portion thereof.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a shot shell having installed within it a flight-marking body adapted to be ignited by the explosion of the powdercharge and to accompany the charge of shot during its flight and so mark the same for the uidance of the shooter.
y invention further consists in a shot shell having an ignitible flight-marking bodv installed within the shell at a point behind the charge of shot and adapted to accompany the same during its flight and mark the path thereof for the guidance of the shooter.
My invention further consists in a shotshell having a flight-marking body installed in a wad located at the rear of the charge of shot.
My invention further consists in a shot shell having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I employ a flight-marking body or pellet consisting of a thin sheet-metal capsule 2 filled with a suitable flame and smokeproducing compound 3 such, for instance, as a mixture of magnesium and barium peroxid. The rear end of the capsule 2 is shaped to form an ignition-opening 4 through which a portion of the composition 3 is exposed. As shown, the said pellet is installed in a circular opening 5 formed in the center of the rearmost wad 6 of the three felt driving- wads 6, 7 and 8 of the shell. The said ignition-opening 4: of the pellet is located in line with a central flame-transmitting opening 9 in the cardboard undershot wad 10 which lies between the wad 6 and the powder-charge 11. The charge of shot 12 is located between the felt driving-wad 8 and the cardboard overshot wad 13 which is held in place by crimping, as at 14, the outer end of the shell-tube or case 15, the rear end of which is capped by a cup-like sheet-metal head 16 mounting a primer 17 which extends forward into the base-wad 18.
When the shell is exploded, the flame of the burning powder passes through the perforation 9 in the cardboard wad 10 and thence through the ignition-opening 4 of the pellet and ignites the exposed composition 3 thereof. As the contents of the shell leave the muzzle of the gun-barrel, the wads drop away and the pellet, now ignited and continuing to burn, travels in the company of the charge of shot and marks their path, the user of the arm governing himself accordingly. I have shown my invention as applied to a standard shot shell, but would have it understood that I do not limit myself to such a shell or to any particular kind of shot shell, nor to any particular form of flight-marking body or pellet. my invention being characterized by the installation within a shot shell of a flight-marking body or pellet adapted to be ignited on the explosion of the shell and having such relation in the the installation in it of matter of weight to the shot employed as to accompany them in their flight.
' I claim A shot shell having charges of powder and shot and a complement of wads, the rearmost wad being formed with a flametransmitting perforation, and the adjacent wad being formed with a perforation for a flight-marking ignitible pellet composed of a capsule con- 10 taining an inflammable composition.
