Description
COLUMBUS LAFAYETTE.MEDEARIS, OF CEDAR GROVE, LOUISIANA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 14, 1920.
Application filed. October 20, 1919. Serial No. 331,817.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CoLUMeUs L. MED-- EARLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Grove, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sterilizers, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to a sterilizer particularly designed for use in sterilizing beds, bed-clothing, or analogous articles, and an object of the invention is to provide a sterilizer structure mounted upon rollers so that they may be easily transported which in eludes a main body of such shape and size as to receive a bed mattress or ticking in its entirety, to receive bed clothes or analogous articles, which body is then closed, and adapted to receive therein a charge of steam, heated air, or analogous sterilizing agents for thoroughly sterilizing the bedding or other articles in the body.
A further object of this invention is to provide asterilizer as'specified, which includes a base structure, which is hollow, and has communication with any suitable supply source of sterilization,-and has its lower or base compartment communicating with the interior of the article receiving compartment through a plurality of openings formed in the top or upper surface of the base compartment.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved sterilizer having parts thereof broken away.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the improved sterilizer having parts thereof broken away.
Fig. 3 is a top plan of thesterilizer having parts thereof broken away, and
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4l-1 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like characters indicate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, the improved sterilizer comprises a base portion 5, which is substantially rectangular in shape and has a plurality of caster wheels 6 attached thereto at its corners to facilitate the transportation of the sterilizer. This horizontal base compartmentois relatively shallow and it has communication with the supply source of any suitable type of sterilizing agent, such. as steam, dry heat or the like through a flexible conduit 7, which is connected to a nipple 8 carried by the compartment 5. The article receiving compartment 9 is supported upon the base compartment 5 and is of such shape as to make it particularly adaptable for receiving therein a bed mattress or tick structure, to permit the sterilizing thereof. The main body 9 is formed of the sections 10 and 11, the latter section being rigidly connected to the base section 5 of the sterilizer, while the section 10 is hingedly connected to the base section 5 by means of hinges as illustrated at 12 in the drawings, so as to permit it to be swung outwardly for the placing of the article to be sterilized within the-sterilizer. Suitable hooks or analogous fastening devices 13 are provided for holding the hinged section 10 in its upright closed position relative to the section 11 for inclosing thearticle to be sterilized. Suitable supporting hooks 14 may be mounted within the section 11 at the upperend thereof. for supporting bed clothing, such as sheets, covers or the like, when it is desired to sterilize them, or any other article of similar nature.
The steam or sterilizing agent passes from the compartment 5 into the main body 9 through a plurality of openings 15, formed in the top of the-base section as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings. The main body section 11 is attached to the top 16 of the base section 5, through the medium of the inturned flange 17 formed on its lower edge, and any suitable type of fastening means as illustrated at 18. The hinged section 10 is provided with an inturned flange 19 along its lower edge which engages and rests upon the upper surface 16 of the bottom or base section 5.
The section 11 is provided with an opening 21 in one endthereof which is closed by a transparent panel 22 and a thermometer 23 is supported inwardly of the transparent panel 22, upon any suitable type of support ing device such as a hook illustrated at 24. By means of the thermometer 23 the tem-' perature of the interior of the main body 9 of the sterilizer may be easily determined for regulating the supplying of the sterilizinn agent thereto.
base section and comprising a section rigidly attached to said base section and a second sectlon hingedly connected to the base section, means for connecting sald rigld and hinged sections, said base section provided with a plurality of openings communicating with the interior of the main body of the sterilizer to permit the passage of a sterilizing agent from the base section into the body, and article supporting hooks'carried by the upper edge of said rigid section.
3."In a sterilizer, the combination of a base section, a body mounted upon said base section and comprising a section rigidly connected to the base section and a second section hingedly connected to the base section, said hinged section and rigid section being of substantially equal size, said base section being hollow and adapted to have communication with the supply source of a sterilizing agent, said base section provided with a plurality of openings communicating with the body to permit the passage of the sterilizing agent from the base section into the body.
4C. In a sterilizer, the combination of a base section, a body mounted upon said base section and comprising a section rigidly connected to the base section and a second section hingedly connected to the base section, said hinged section and rigid section being of substantially equal size, said base section being hollow and adapted to have a communication with the supply source of a sterilizing agent, said base section provided with a plurality of openings communicating with the body to permit the passage of the sterilizing agent from the base section into the body, the rigid section of said body provided with an opening in one end thereof, a transparent panel forming a closure for said opening "adapted to permit viewing of the interior of the body.
5. In a sterilizer, the combination, of a base section, said base section being rectangular in formation, and having a chamber therein, said section having apertures in the upper face thereof, a flexible tube communicating with said section, an article receiving compartment comprising a rigid section adapted to be mounted upon said base sec tion, and having one side thereof open, and a hinged section connected to said base, said section being substantially of the same formation as said rigid section and having an open face adapted to abut against said open face of the rigid section, article receiving hooks arranged upon the top of said rigid section, and means for determining the tem peratureewithin said casing, said means being disposed within said casing.
