MORRIS B. OKUN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR'TO A. MURPHY, OF CHICAGO,
ILLINOIS. Y
SIDE-RAIL STRUCTURE.
Original application filed May 20, 1918,
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, MORRISv B. OKUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Side-Rail Structures, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a art of this specification.
l y invention relates to side rails for wooden bed structures and has for its object the provision of an improved structure of this type whereby the side rails of the bed may be suitably united to the wooden posts of a bed. The structure contemplates that the rails may be reversibly mounted in position, as this term is understood in the art.r
This present application is a divisional application of my application Serial #235,590, filed May 20, 1918.
My invention contemplates in its preferred form a side rail structure made of metal which is so constructed that it is entirely sanitary by covering up the slot ordinarily provided in the wooden post. The slot of the corner post is, when not closed, a source of dust and other accumulations which contribute very largely to unsanitary conditions of a bed. With my improved structure one of its advantages consists in the elimination of this unsanitary feature.
I will explain my invention more in detail by referring to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentar (perspective view showing a side rail of a e as mounted upon the post in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the side rail in its reversed position;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view online 3*?) of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 3, and y Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-.5of
Specification of Letters Patent.v
Patented Dec. 7, 19270.
Serial No. 235,590. Divided and this application filed January 27, 1919. Serial No. 273,295.
22. This face plate' isfadapted to abut a corner post 23 of thebed in the illustra tions of Figs. 1, 2, 3,4 and 5, this corner post is designed to be of the customary wooden variety. The post has a recessed portion 24 preferably in the form of a slot across which extends a bolt 25. This bolt or hanger is adapted to coperate with the reversible finger 26. This finger has a tail piece 27 by which it is riveted to and secured upon the side rail and face plate through the agency of the rivets 22. The finger 26 has recesses 28 adapted to fit the bolt 25.
In the form shown, the finger has flaring inclined sides as shown at 29 leading away from the recessed portions 28, these flaring portions serving to draw the side rail closely against the corner post when the two parts are hooked together as shown in the illustrations. Shoulders 30 are provided for the finger 26 which preferably abut the end l and 27. By reason of the fact that the linger A 26 is symmetrically constructed on its opposite sides, the structure is of the reversible type so that the side rail 20 may occupy either the position shown in Fig. 1 or the position shown in Fig. 2.
It will be noted that the plate 21 abso' lutely closes and seals the opening of the slot 24, thus fulfilling all of the sanitary requirements with regard to structures of this kind.
It vmust be understood that other similar structures can be used not having the exact arrangements as herein disclosed, but which would still be comprehended within the terms of the claim.
The length of the face plate 21 is such that it aids materially in holding all of the various parts in alinement.
From what has been described the nature of my invention will be readily clear, as will also the fact that various modifications may be made Within its scope. Having however thus described one form which my invention may take, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A bed having` in Combination a Wooden bed post having a flat face and a slot opening upon said face, a pin on said post extending transversely through the slot, a
metal side rail having secured to its vertical' said vertical leg of the rail and protruding through the slot in said plate, said part being adapted to enter the slot in the bed post and engage the pin, the portion of said. part that extends through the slot in the plate being of a size and shape in cross section corresponding in size and shape to the slot of the plate to completely close the said slot, said rail, plate and partbeing secured together by rivets passing through the vertical leg of the side rail.
In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 23rd day of January, A. D. v
MORRIS B. oxUN.
