UNITED STATES DAVID A. BOLARD, OF LLANERCH, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOOTHBRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 30, 1920.
Original application filed May 20, 19 20, Serial No. 382,765. Divided and this application filed'October 2, 1920. Serial No. 414,309.
[0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID A. BOLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Llanerch, in the county of Delaware, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Toothbrush, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a brush more particularly a tooth brush proper, a supplemental brush for cleaning the same, and a chamber in the handle of the former adapted to receive the latter, said supplemental brush being provided with means whereby the tooth brush proper with the supplemental brush thereon may be suspended from any desirable place and the supplemental brush is adapted to retain its position in the tooth brush proper.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claims.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a tooth brush embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section thereof.
- Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts 1n the figures.
Referring to the drawings.
l designates a tooth brush proper compose of the handle 2, the head 3 and bristles at and which excepting the features of my invention applied thereto is of ordinary constructiou. Within the handle 2 is the chamber 5 which is bored, cast or otherwise formed therein and open at the outer terminal as at 6, said opening forming an inlet to said chamber and outlet therefrom.
In said chamber is seated a supplemental brush which is composed of the head 7 of bristles or other suitable material, and the shank 8 which carries said head, the latter being preferably of cylindrical form in cross section and of such diameter as to hold frictionally on the wall of the chamber, so that into the chamber the ring 9 is exposediand the latter may be employed to hang up both brushes, say on a wall, wash-stand shelf or other object or place, the frictional contact of the head 7 with the bore or wall of the chamber. 5 being suflicient to hold the supplementalbrush engaged in said chamber sufficient to retain the brush proper suspended from the supplemental brush, and so the latter and the other brush may be suspended as one by means of the ring 9 from a nail, hook, screw, etc. on a wall or other object as hereinbefore specified.
The device may be carried in a satchel, bag, etc, without improper disengagement of the two brushes and the latter may form a compact article convenient for packing, storage, transportation, etc.
Having thus described my invention what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A brush proper comprising ahead, brushing material thereon, and a handle, the latter having therein a longitudinally extending chamber, and a supplemental brush adapted to occupy said chamber and to engage frictionally therein whereby said supplemental brush may retain an inoperative osition within said handle.
2. brush proper, comprising a head, brushing material thereon, a handle, the latter having a longitudinally extending chamber therein, and a supplemental brush adapted to occupy said chamber and to be held en gaged therein, the outer terminal of the shank of said supplemental brush having thereon a member providing both a handle for conveniently removing the supplemental brus'h from said chamber and returning it thereinto, and a device for suspending both brushes from said supplemental brush.
