Be it known that I, IVILLIAM E. IVINF., a citizen of the United States, residino" at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and the btate of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-ventilators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in ventilators for freight cars and has for its obj ect to provide a ventilator which is simple in construction, efiicient in operation and durable in service.
Tith these and other objects hereinafter explained in View. my invention consists in" the construction and combination of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention: Figure 1 is a full front view of the ventilator frame with the shutters closed; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2; Fig. 3 shows in a modification a view similar to section on 2-2 but with shutters closed; Fig. 4 shows the same modification shown in Fig. 3 but with shutters open; Fig. 5 is a sect-ion on line 5-5 of Fig. 2; Fig. G is a section on line 6-6 of Fig. 3.

Referring now to the parts by number: The frame is composed of sides 1, top bar 2 and bottom bar 3. The opening between the sides and to and bottom bars is opened and closed by s utters 4 which are pivoted in pockets 5 on trunnions 6. The'pockets 5 are located near the bottom edge of shutters 4 and at opposite ends thereof and adapted on their inner side to engage trunnion 6 and on their outside to engage sealing rib 7. The shutters 4 are moved into their open and closed positions by operating bar 8 which is pivoted thereto by means of lugs 9 and pins 10.
When the shutters are in their ope-n position 4A, the operating bar 4 engages the outer surface of the shutters and does not ypermit them to move farther inward.
From reference to Fig. 2, it will be seen that when the shutters are in their open position their centers of gravity are located Specification of Letters Patent.

to the left of the center of the pivot which causes the shutters to remain closed without other holding means.
It will also be seen that when the shutters are in their open position 4A, their centers of gravit-y are to the right of the pivotal center, and therefore will remain in their opened position without means for holding them in this position.
As an additional means of safety for holding the shutters in their opened and closed positions, there is pivoted to operating bars 8 a locking bar 11 which is provided with openings 12 and 13 for engagement with lug 14 on the bottom bars 3 when the shutters are in their closed and opened positions respectively. The lug 14 is provided with a hole l5 which is adapted for the' reception of any suitable locking or sealing device. T he locking bar 11 is pivoted to the operating bar 8 by means of a hooked end 16 which is inserted through hole 17 in the connecting bar and then the end 16A is bent downwardly to prevent removal.
The top bar 2 is provided with a depending rib 2A which is adapted to fit snugly with the top edge of the top shutter 4, thus forming a tight joint the entire length thereof. The bottom bar 3 is provided with a hook shaped rib 3a which is adapted to engage the bottom edge of bottom shutter 4 and form a weather tight joint therewith. The top edges of the bottom and intermediate shutter interlock or overlap with the bottom edge of the shutter immediately above thus forming a water tight joint. The ribs 7 are parallel, the outer face of the shutters and form, besides a support at the bottom for the shutters, a sealing rib as well, thus making a weather tight joint at each end of the shutters.
The modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4 differ only from that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in that the shutters 4 are not interlocking. In this case the frame is provided with intermediate bars 18 which interlock with the shutters in their closed positions and at the same time materially strengthen the ventilator frame. The pockets 5, trunnions 6 and ribs 7 being similar in all respects to 5, 6 and 7 respectively of Fig. 2.
It will be understood from this description that although the improvements in this invention are simple, they accomplish in a thoroughly practical manner all the objects sought. t
I Wish it further understood that I do not desire to be limited tothe specific construction or arrangement of elements shown and described, as it is obvious that changes in construction and arrangement may be made Without departing from the spirit-of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I aim in the appended claims to cover all modifications which do not involve a departure from its spirit and scope.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A ventilator comprising a frame having sides and top and bottom bars, arcuate sealing ribs on the sides of the frame, terminating in bearings, a plurality of shutters in said frame and mounted in said bearings, each shutter having ``\its central axis of rotation along a line drawn through its lower edge and the oppositely disposed bearings, and means on the frame for holding the shutters in their pivotal position.
2. A ventilator comprising a frame having top and bottom bars and sides, crossbars mounted in said frame, said crossbars having their inner portions in the form of channel bars, trunnions located on the sides of the frame and opposite the space Within the lower ends of Which extend to the above mentioned trunnions, shutters provided at their lower edges With means Jfor mounting them on said trunnions, thesaid shutters being held in their mounted position by said aforementioned channel portions, and means for operating said shutters.
3. A ventilator comprising a frame having top and bottom bars and sides, crossbars mounted in said frame, said crossbars having their inner portions in the form of channel bars, trunnions located on the sides of the frame and opposite the space Within the channeled section, arcuate sealing ribs, the lower ends of which extend to the above mentioned trunnions, shutters provided at their lower edges with means for mountingthem on said trunnions, the said shutters bemg held 1n their mounted pos1t1on by said aforementioned channel portions,
'means for operating said shutters and said operating means also being the means for limiting the openmost position of said shutters.
