Description

L. L. WHITAKER.
TOY VEHICLE.

PATENT OFFICE.
LAWRENCE L. WHITAKER, OFWINDBER, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOY VEHICLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nov. 16, 1920.
Application filed December 6, 1919. serial No. 342,902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE L. WHrr- AKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVindber, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toy vehicles for children.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a vehicle wherein each of the several parts coact with each other in order to insure the maximum simplicity with strength and durabilit x to complete an assembly of the vehicle with a minimum number of securing means such as bolts or pegs in order that it may be readily disassembled or repaired, and to so position the seat and wheels that propulsion of the vehicle may be eifected with little exertion on the part of the child.
Furthermore the invention contemplates in addition to the utilization of parts to form in assembly the substantial silhouette of a horse or other animal, the construction of such parts so that they will serve as supporting members for the operating parts.
With these objects in view and others which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended.
In the drawings wherein is illustrated preferred embodiment of the invention:
Figure 1 is an assembled side view of the vehicle, and
Fig. 2 is a view of the parts disassembled, but in line to show clearly the manner of constructing the vehicle.
In the drawings wherein like characters of reference indicate like or similar parts throughout the several views 1 designates the body portion of the vehicle which is constructed to approximate the body of a horse having a head 2 and a tail 3, and provided with a vertical bore 4 centrally thereof to receive the steering gear generally designated by 5. A suitable decorative covering 6 is thrown over or secured to the body about the bore 4 to simulate a saddle, and reins 7 are attached to the mouth portion of the head. Secured to the lower edge of the body are depending rods 8 and 9 having openings 10 therein. The rods 8 and 9 are 7 designated respectively to engage within vertical bores 11 and 12 formed in and partially extending through the front leg portion 13 and hind leg portion 14;
horizontal openings 15 being provided in' the portions 13 and 14 for communication with the openings in rods 8 and 9 to receive securing means such asbolts 16 which extend through the openings 10 in the rods to holdthe leg portions 13 and 14 securely upon the body. 7 p
Interposed between the body portion and leg portions is an intermediate member 17 formed with openings 18, 19 and 20 designated respectively to allow passage of the rod 8, steering gear 5 and rod 9 therethrough, and provided with an enlarged portion 21 forming a seat for the child. .A transverse bar 22 secured to the intermediate member 17 as at 23 is provided with lateral rearwardly extending arms 24 to form a suitable foot support for the child.-
The steering gear generally designated by 5 has ahorizontal operating lever 25 provided with a hand clasp 26 and a vertical steering rod 27 having a squared end '28and ascrew threaded terminal 29. The steering rod 27 extends, as before stated, through the bore 4 and also passes through an opening 30 in the rear part of the front leg portion and is secured within a partially squared opening in the forked member 31 of the front wheel by a suitable nut 32/ The forked member has arms 33 between which are rotatably mounted a wheel 34 of any suitable type.
A bracket 35 having an opening 37 therethrough is positioned in the rear of the hind leg portion 14 which carries a pin 38 which extends through and is glued within the opening 37. The seat 21 is provided. with an opening 39 which is for decorative purpose or may be used as an auxiliary hand hold by the child. A rear axle 40 is secured on the lower edge of the bracket and has mounted thereon wheels 41 of any desired type, but preferably solid as shown.
It will thus be seen that in assembling the vehicle the intermediate section is placed in position upon the body portion with the rods 8 and 9 extending through the openings 18 and 20 and the front leg and hind leg portions are secured in place by the rods 8 and 9 in the manner described, whereupon the steering rod 27 is passed through the verti cal bore 4: and opening 30 and secured Within the front wheel forked member ;and the bracket 35 carrying the rear Wheels i1 is attached thus completing the assembly.
In operation the child when seated pro 7 device as embodying a specific structure, I
desire it to be understood'that such changes may be made in said structure, as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.-
What I claim is: a
' 1. A toy of the class described comprising an animal shaped body composed of a plurality of sections with an intermediate member interposed between them, pins carried by one section and the other having sockets to receiversaid pins, a seat carried by one end of said intermediate member and a cross bar carried by said member in advance of said seat to form supports for the feet of the user.
2. A toy vehicle comprising a body, leg portions carried by the body, an intermediate portion between the body and legportions, releasable means for securing the body, intermediate and leg portions together, running gear supporting the body,
' and steering gear extending through the body, intermediate portion and one of the leg portions and engaging part ofthe running gear for attaching the same to the vehicle and cooperating to hold the body, in termediate portions and one of the leg portions assembled.
3. A toy vehicle comprising a body shaped to simulate an animal in silhouette, leg portions, on the body, releasable means on the body for attaching the leg portions thereto, forward running gear and rear running gear, steering mechanism extending through the body, and one of the leg portions for at taching the forward running'gear to the body and cooperating to effect an assembly of the body and one of the leg portions, and a bracket on one of the leg portions and supported thereby for mounting the rear running gear.
A toy vehicle comprising a body shaped to simulate an animal in silhouette, front and hind leg portions on the body, releasable rode on the body releasably engaging the leg portions to secure them to the body, an inter mediatesection between the body and leg portions secured by the rods, a seat on the intermediate section, forward running gears, steering mechanism extending through the body, intermediate section and front leg portions and engaging the forward running gear for holding the same thereon and for cooperating to hold the body, intermediate section and front le portions together, rearward running gear, a bracket on the hind leg portions and engaging the seat for mounting the rear running gear and head and tail portions on the body for the purpose set forth. r In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
