Application filed March 22, 1920. Serial No. 367,597.
To @ZZ whom t mayiconcern: A
Be it known that we, HAROLD H. WHEELER and HERBERT J. NILsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Loraine, inthe county of Renville `and lState 'of'V North Dakota, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Grain-Doors; and we do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchV as willV enable .others skilled in the art to which itv appertainsto make and use the same; Y V p Our invention has for its object to yprovide an extremely simple and highlyeiiicient grain door for cars, and to this end,
` it consists of the novel devices andcombina'- tions of'devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims. -Y l In the accompanying drawings,r which illustrate the invention, like charactersindicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective viewvof a box car body having our improved grain door installedv therein`looking at the saine from the inside-of said body and with the grain door closed; y
Fig. 2 is a view corresponding to'Fig. 1, with the exception that the outer door section rhas been partly opened to produce be,- tween the door sections a relief port;
Fig. 3 is a transverse verticalA section taken onv the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale; f f i Fig. L is an elevational'view in part section showing the track bar and gear and Fig. 5 is a detail view in transverse section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
The numeral 6 indicates an ordinary boX car body having in itssides the usual door openings formedfbetween door posts 7y and provided with sliding outside doors 8. Secured tol the'inside of the car body 6, at each side of the door opening, is a sheath 9 pref.
erably formed from sheet metal and entirely closed except for a y door opening and a ygrain escape passageway 10 at the bottom thereof. These sheaths 9 are `shallow and take yup very little room inthe car body. At the door opening in each sheath V9 is a supplemental door post V11, which bears' Aagainstthe inner facevof said sheath and is secured to the Hoor and top of the car body 6.
The improved grain door comprises inner and outer sections 12 and 13, respectively, mounted for reversefsliding movementin sively increases in size the sheaths 9. These door seotions-12 and 13 are preferably formed from sheet metal vand may be. slid'compl'etely into the sheaths 9 so that they areentirely out of the way,
or .slid part way out :of said sheaths into yoverlapping arrangement tolclose the door lVhenthe door sections 12 and 13 are closed, they overlap both Adoor posts 7' opening.
to securely hold' said sections against out'- ward pressure. To further assist in hold'- ning the doorfsections against outward pressure, there is secured to the floor of the car bodyG, outward of the door sections, a cleat v14. The overlapping vertical edgesofthe door sections 12 and, 13 are oblique in respoot to each other, V and preferably, as
` shown, .said overlapping edges are both beveled downwardly and backwardly to pro duce therebetween, when the outer door section is opened, va reliefipo'rt 15 that progresisy opened. Y f
A horizontal reinforcing bar 16 is secured to `the inner door section substantially at the vertical centerfthereof and has a length substantially equal to the width of vsaid door section so as to overlap the door posts 7 when said door section is closed. The end of the reinforcing bar` 16, which projects beyond' the oblique edge of the inner door section 12, has formed thereon a hook 17 arranged to interlock witha pinl or lockV lug 18 on one of the supplemental door posts 11 and thereby lhold said inner door section closed. On the top edgeof theouter as said doory section so i door vsection 13, is an inwardly projecting 'i track bar 19 which rests upon thetop edge of the inner door section 12. and slidably supports said outer door section thereon. By reference to Fig. 5, it will benoted that the top edge of the'inn'er door' section 12 is also bent slightly inward to afford a reinforcing iange. Y A l On the iV ner edge'oftheitrackbar 19, is a downturned ange 20. whichoverlaps theflanged upper edge of the inner door section 12 and thereby Vlocks the two door sections together at their top edges' against' lat,-` eral movement in respect to each other.
I The flanged track bar 19Y also guides the two door sections for naralle'lsliding movement.
The track bar 19 is ofsuch'length as to overlap the door posts 7 when the outer door section 13 is closed and thereby materially reinforces and holds the door. sections ,y
against outward pressure.`
Y certain ofthe gear teeth" 21.
Formed on the top of the track bar 19 are lon itudinally spaced gear teeth 21, which mei with a pinion 22 journaled in one of the sheaths9. The pinion 22 may be ro-V tated to impart endwise sliding movement to i the outer door section 12 by means of a hand wheel 23 secured to the inner end of the shaft of said pinion. K In some instances, it v might be desirable to provide the shaft of the pinion with means for operating said pinion from the outside of the car body. To hold the outer VVdoor section 13 closed,
p there is -pivoted at one of the door posts 7 a lock finger 24 arranged to restion the track bar` 19 under the action ofl gravity between` If desired, anti-friction devices maybe Y provided for the'inner door section to cause the same to slide more easily,v and, likewise, anti-friction devices may be interposed be-u tweenthe trackbar 19 and the top of the inner door section 12 to 'cause the outer door section 13 to slide more easily.
1To' unloadgrain from a car having our improved grain door installedthereimit is only necessary toslightly open the outside door section 13 by manipulating the'liand wheel 23 and thereby produce between the door sections 12 and 13 a relatively small grain release port 15. As the pressure of the grain is relieved from the door, the wheel 23'can be operated from time to time to increasethe sizeof the escape port 15, and
finally the outer door section may be moved into a complete open position. The oper` a'tor may thenget intothe car, if necessary, and open the inner door section 12 to complete the unloading of the car.
From the above description, it is evident that our improved grain door may be installed in a car: body without cutting or otherwise mutilating the same, and it does not, in any way, interfere with the customary outsi e doors, or the use of wooden doorsif it is desiredV to use the saine when loading-cars `with coal. or other bulk commodities. c c y A What we claim ist- Y 1.
