Description

J. P. LAVIG NE. PACKLESS VALVE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE I2. 1915.
Patented Sept. '14, 1920.
JOSEPH P. LAVIGNE, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN; ASSIGNOR To UNITED s'rA'rns NOVELTY OFFl iCE- MFG.- 00., 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION or MICHIGAN.
PACKLESS VALVE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH Pi LAVIGNE, a citizen ofthe United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of WVayne and State of Michigan, have invented cer- 'the consequent stuffing boX glands and the like are omitted from the construction, the
simplicity of which aids its efficiency.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section, parts being shown in elevation of a valve that embodies features of the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section taken on or about line 11-11 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, a casing 1 that is exteriorly fitted for pipe connections and is preferably globular in general contour, has an inner annular valve seat 2 against which a suitable closure 3 may be seated. A bonnet 1 that is screwthreaded into or otherwise mounted over an opening in the casing 1 to seal the latter and is disposed in axial alinement with the valve seat 2, has a coarse interior thread indicated at 5 in a depending sleeve 6 preferably formed integrally on the bonnet. A hollow extension 7 of an extended and enlarged stem 8 of the closure 3 is in screwthreaded engagement with the thread 5. A squared or splined post 9 is in non-rotatable and longitudinally reciprocable engagement with the extension 7 and is provided with a depend: ing cylindrical guide finger 10 that enters a guide opening in the stem 8 of the closure 3 and thereby holds the latter in operative relation to the seat 2. Relief openings, 11 provide constant communication between the space in the bore of the extension around the finger 10 and the casing chamber. A thrust flange '12 or collar formed on the square post 9 bears upwardly against a compression washer 13 that is interposed between the collar and an annular flange 14 in the bonnet 1. p
A handle 15 has a boss 16 that forms a Application fil ed June 12,"
1915. Serial No. "33356;
housing overthe tubularupper end portion hollow stem 18, the lower portion of which is in non-rotatable and longitudinally reciprocal engagement with the squared upper end portion of the post 9, and is journaled in the barrel 17. A washer 19 is interposed between the annular end face of the" barrel 17 and'the corresponding grooved end hearing face of the handle boss. A tension spring 22 in compression between a nut 20 on'an upper screwthreaded portion 23 of Specificationof Letters Patent. f P t t g e 14, 9
or barrel 17 of the bonnet 1, and a depending v the post 9 and a washer or stop 2-1- seated on the shoulder formed between the circular and squared bores of the stem 18, maintains the flange 12 in sealing contact with the packing member 13.1 A guard screw 21 in the handle opening completes the structure. The flange 14 is so disposed in relation to the member 18 as to leave a clearance between the parts; Preferably leakage around the compression washer 13 is further prevented by annular grooves or serrations in the surfaces of the flange 14 and collar 12.
As a result of this construction a quick opening valve is obtained in which no pack- I ing is exposed directly to the fluid passing through the valve so that the valve is not affected by any high steam temperature or the like to which itmay be subjected; The parts are so alined that the parts are not only easily machined but when assembled are readily taken down for inspection, replacement, cleansing and repair. I
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
lVhat I claim is 1. A valve comprising a casing having an inner annular valve seat, a bonnet closing the casing in substantially axial alinement with the seat and havin an upwardly extending barrel, a closure for the seat, a 'ro- 100 tatable stem engaging the closure and cooperating with the bonnet to operate the closure, a collar on the closure engaging stem, an annular flange in the bonnet above the collar, a packing member between the 105 flange on the handle telescoping over the 11.0
upper portion of the barrel, joint sealing means between the handle flange and the bonnet barrel end face, and means within the depending hollow stem for forcing the flange of the handle against the sealing means and the collar against the packing member.
2. A valve comprising a casing having an inner annular valve seat, a bonnet closing the casing in substantially axial alinement with the seat and having an upwardly extending barrel, a closure for the seat, a hollow rotatable stem integral with the closure and screwthreaded into the bonnet, a post longitudinally reciprocable and nonrotatably relatedto the stem and revoluble in the barrel, a collar on the post, an annular flange in the bonnet above the collar, a compression washer between the collar and bonnet flange, a handle 7 having a depending hollow stem ournaled in the housing barrel in non-rotatable and longitudinally recip and a spring in compression around the post between the nut and the depending of the handle stem. c
In testimony whereof I ai'lix my signaportion ture in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH P, LAVIGNE.
