BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. Is, I9I9.

DAVID C. PATTERSON, 0F OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
'BLDING CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed September 18, 1919.
To allee/0111, t may concern.'
Be it known that I, DAVID C. PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska," have invented certain new and useful Aimprovements in Building Construction, of which the following is a specication.
rl'his invention relates to an improvement in building construction and has for its principal object to provide a confined air space for the outer walls Aof a building, to exclude the cold or heat or dampness from the interior. Another object is to provide such a construction that buildings may be built conveniently and economically. The invention is fully illustrated in an accompanying drawing, and the novel and useful features are described hereinafter and are particularly pointed out in the' appended claim. In the drawing, Figure 1 is a broken away view in Section Showing one of the walls of the building and an abutting basement floor. F ig. 2 is a view in side elevation showing a part of the upright wall, the stucco therefor being omitted.
Referring now to the drawing for a more particular description, I provide two-pari side walls 3, each having an air-space 4 con tinuous from its footing 5 to the upper floor joist 6 the height of these walls depending upon the number of stories required for a building.
Each upright side wall consists of an outer part a and an inner part Z), preferably constructed of cement or similar adhesive material and connected by tie-rods 7, said rods having angular terminals embedded in a manner to maintain the parts a and Z) in spaced relation and approximately parallel; and for convenience when building the walls these parts are formed as rectangular blocks with channels therebetween, as shown in the drawing.
The footing 5 may `be constructed of concrete or any other material adapted to Sustain the weight of the side walls, and as described, Said walls are imperforate with the exception that suitable openings are provided for doors 8 and windows 9, hair-cloth 10 or other compressible insulating material being employed and interposed between the wall and the frames 11 of the doors and windows, so that air within the spaces will not communicate with the atmosphere, caps l2 of concrete or wood together with hair- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 17, 1920. Serial No. 324,467.
cloth or other suitable insulating material 13 being employed for effecting a closure of the top of the wall 3. Numerals 14 indicate headersl for the floor-joist 6, and at 15 is indicated hair-cloth or similar `fibrous insulating material interposed between the iloorjoist G and the floor 16 thereon, the lower side of the floor-joist 6 being provided with insulating material 17 and plaster 18.
AS best shown in F ig. 1, that part below the first loor-joist 19 is for a basement, and since a part thereof is generally disposed below the ground line and generally is subject to dampness, a double wall, preferably constructed of concrete, is provided for .its loor, consisting of a Hoor-base 2O and a floor-plate 21 sustained above the base by a plurality of spacing-bars 22, whereby an air-space c is provided having a length and breadth corresponding to the area, in plan, of the basement, said air-space not being in communication with the atmosphere, said double floor preferably consisting of rectangular sections d, for convenience, the bars 22 being of such proportion that they will sustain the wei-ght incidental to the uses of the floor 21, and the angular terminals of said bars being embedded in the concrete or cement when the sections are formed.
Numerals 23 indicate plaster which is applied to the interior of the side walls, and at 24 as indicated stucco for parts of the Side walls above the ground line.
The construction is considered to be simple, and dwelling houses or larger buildings may be conveniently built in the manner described; and since the interior of the building ispractically surrounded by a confined air-space, the expense for heating during extreme cold weather will be reduced to a minimum, and the interior of the building will remain comfortably cool during hot weather, dampness for the basement being practically eliminated.
`What I claim as new and desire to Secure by Letters Patent is In building construction, a pair of up- Iight walls each being provided with an opening, tie-rods embedded in said walls for maintaining them approximately parallel and to provide an air Space therebetween, a frame in the openings of said walls, a footing for supporting and for closing the air space at the bottom of said walls, an insulating element mounted upon the upper terminals of said walls, a cap-member upon said insulating element, a eompiessible brous viding an air-space between the base-mem- 10 element in the openings of said walls for enbei' and Hoor-plates approximately equal in gagging the trame, aV base-member of adarea to the area of said base-member.
hesive material extending` horizontally from In teetimony whereof I have aixed my 5 the footing, upright Spacing-bars embedded signatue-n presence of two witnesses.
in and projecting above the base-member, DAVID C. PATTERSON.
and a plurality of floor-plates of adhesive Vitnesses:
