Inventor.
UNITED s ATEs PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK E. ORMSBY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GALIPER OR INDICATING- GAGE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK E. ORMSBY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cookand State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Caliper, or Indicating Gages, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide which such tools apply; also for height or surface gaging, tests and the like.
The invention also consists in parts and combinations of the same fully described and set forth hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar references to letters indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation'of said tool, set for inside application-testing borings and surfaces. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the tool set for outside application testing shafts, shells, and all outside measurements. Fig. 8 is an elevation of thereverse side of the tool, showing the manner of spreading the legs and adjusting parts hereinafter described.
Attached to the bottom of the main portion of leg A, Fig. 1, is a needle-bar or pointer c, projecting below the end of said leg A, forming contacting points, thence eX- tending along the surface of said leg A to the graduated scale lines it under the main joint, showing by the throw of said needlebar micrometric variations at the lower or contacting surfaces.
Near the lower end of said needle-bar is a spring 7, for regulating the needle for either inside or outside application. Said spring 7', Fig. 1, is securely fastened by means of a set screw to the frictional stud upon which the needle bar plays, and the other or upper end of said spring is bent to clasp the needle bar on either side, the raising and shifting of the same changing of this arrangement being Specification of Leas-s Patent. P t t 1 2 Application filed December 6, 1918.
Serial No. 265,581.
for either inside or outside apwhich is frictionally joined a specially curved adjustable bar c, which forms an. extension to leg B and which is adjustable for either inside or outside application, said bar being held firmly in position by a set screw m Fig. 3.
Fig. 1 shows the adjustment for inside application, and Fig. 2 shows the curved bar 6 reversed and set for outside use.
The adjustment of the spread of the legs is accomplished by means of a simple rod C, Fig. 3, having from the center to one end, and a left thread running to the opposite end, said rod pass ing back and forth through two frictional stud nuts 71 2' attached to legs A and B respectively, with thumb screw n held in position by two lock nuts 0 0 the advantage in doubling maintaining and in simple speed in adjusting to sizes and perfect rigidity at all times, construction and efliciency.
At the upper ends of legs A and B are indicating lines It showing the spread of the contacting points of said legs to the fraction of an inch, enabling the user to set the tool very closely to size, a slight turn to bring the needle-bar c to the test point on scale (Z completing the operation.
I am aware that calipers and indicating gages are made in various forms, showing jointed legs, indicating needles or pointers and attachments therefor, and that needles or pointers are in general use in various articles of manufacture; but I am not aware that a caliper indicating gage has been produced combining the essential features herein described in the simple form as shown; I therefore, do not claim such a combination broadly; but
What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In caliper indicating gages, two legs of different lengths, pivotally connected to each other and having scales at the pivotally connected ends thereof, each leg having a point member pivotally connected thereto at the free end thereof, one of said legs having a secondary scale and the point member pivotally connected thereto having an indicator extension adapted to move over said secondary scale.
a right thread running 2. In caliper indicating gages, two legs of different lengths 'pivotally connected to each other and having scalesat the pivotally' connected ends thereof, each leg having a point member pivotally connectedthereto at the free end thereof, one of said legs having a secondary scale, the point member pivotally connected thereto having an indicator extension adapted to move over said secondary scale, and a spring secured at one end to said extension and having its other end adapted to engage either edge of the leg on Which said extension is mounted.
3. In caliper indicating gages, two legs of different lengths pivotally connected to each other and having scales at the pivot-. ally connected ends thereof, each leg having a point membe'r pivotally connected thereto at the freeend thereof, one of said legs having a secondary scale, the point member pivlegs and adapted to secure the point Inember pivotally connected thereto in fixed position thereon.
4 In caliper indicating gages, two legs of different lengths pivotally connected to each other and: having scales at the pivotally connected ends thereof, each le having a point-member pivotally connectecthereto at the free end thereof, one of said legshaving a secondary scale, the point member pivotally connected theretohaving an indicator extension adaptedcto move over said secondary scale, aspring 'secured at one end to said extension and having its other end adapted to engageeither edge of the leg on which saidextension is mounted, a set screw passing through the other of said legs and adapted to securethe point memberspivotally connected thereto "in fixed position thereon, eachleghaving vscrew threaded studs pivotally connectedkthereto, and a screw having righta-nd left-hand'threads engag. ing said-studs to adj u'stthe legs to and from eachother.
