REEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 14, 1919. Serial No. 330,654.
' this application is a reel, adapted for handling wire, and intended primarily but not exclusively to be used in the making of fences.
The invention aims to provide a device of the sort above mentioned which can be rolled readily along the ground, the construction being such that, upon occasion, the reel may be collapsed, to permit the roll of wire to be removed from the arms of the reel.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings t- Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the invention; and Fig. 2 is a section taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The device forming the subject matter of this application includes a hub 1 preferably in the form of a plate having ears 2 which outstand in a direction at right angles to the plane defined by the plate, the plate being cut away between the ears, as shown at 9. The ears 2 are connected by pivot elements 3 on which arms 4 are mounted intermediate their ends, and relatively near to their inner ends, the construction being such that the arms may be swung in a direction at right angles to the plane defined by the plate or hub 1. Through the extreme inner ends of the arms 4: and through the hub 1 pass removable securing devices 5, which may be bolts provided with wing nuts. At their outer ends, the arms 4 are supplied with U- shaped wire retainers 6 disposed at right angles to the plane defined by the plate or hub 1. Each retainer 6 terminates in a laterally extended handle 7 In practical operation, the device is disposed as shown in the drawings, the removable securing devices 5 holding the arms 6 Patented July 27,1920.
against swinging movement in a direction at right angles to the hub 1. By means of the handles 7 the reel may be rolled along the surface of the ground, indicated. at 8, the wire being received in the parts 6. It is to be observed that the elements 7 not only serve as handles, but, as well, prevent the reel from sinking into the ground, or, at least, impede thesinking of the reel while the wire is being wound thereon.
After a coil of wire has been formed in the parts 6, some of the securing devices 5 I may be removed. Then the corresponding arms 4 may be swung until they stand. at an angle to the hub 1, under which circumstances, the roll of wire may be removed from the retainers 6.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described. a hub; arms; means for pivoting the arms intermediate their ends to the hub for lateral swinging movement with respect to the hub and having wire receiving elements at their outer ends; and removable securing devices passing through the inner ends of the arms and the hub.
2. In a device of the class described, a
hub; arms pivoted to the hub for lateral swinging movement with respect to the hub, the arms being provided at their outer ends with U-shaped wire retainers having laterally projecting parts constituting handles for rotating the reel in contact with the ground, and constituting, also, means for limiting the sinking of the reel into the ground; and means cooperating with the hub and with the arms for holding the arms releasably against swinging movement.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM F. HARBAUGH.
I Witnesses:
A. J. PENN, M. M. OWEN.
