Referring to the drawings p in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the ninneral 1 generallyindicates the improved invalids bed, whichincludes "a ri gid` frame 2 formed of angle iron or the like, which. is adapted to be supported onthe bedstead 3. Crossed braces 9 extend diagonally across the rigid trame and brace the same against all undue strain.
An upper frame 10 is positioned above p the sameshape and dimensions as the lower trame. lhe upper trame 10 includes a plurality of hinged sections 11, 'lfand '13,vvhich form respectively the head, body and loot portions oit the bed.` The head 11. and body portion 12 are connected at their upper edges by means oil a hinge 14. The foot section '13 `and the body section 12 are connected at their lovver meeting edges by means of hinges 16. The pivotedcatohes 1G are preferably carried by the terminals of the body section 12 and are adapted to engage over pins 17 carried bythe adjacent ends of the head and foot sections and are to hold the sections in rigid position, when the sections are inalinement with each other. The body .section 12 is formed oliside pieces 18 and the head and ioot sections 11 and. 13 are formed of side pieces `19 and end pieces 20. The side piecesy 19 are each `formed of tvvo sections 21 and 22, Which. are slidably connected together.
The section 21 has one end thereof reduced as at 23 and provided with slots 24e and the section 22 is positioned over the reduced extension 23 and carries bolts 25 which are slidably received in the slots 24. Suitable nuts 26 are threaded on the bolts to hold the sections against movement when so desired.
.The purpose of formingv the head and foot sections in two parts, will be hereinafter more fully set forth. The end pieces 20 and side pieces 19 ofthe hinged sections are connected by diagonal braces 27 which hold the same against distortion.
A spring 28 is secured to the upper frame 10 and includes lcontractile coil springs 29 which have their outer terminals'secured to the end pieces 2O of the head and foot sections 11 and 13. The inner ends of the coil springs are connected by links 30 and at suitable distances between the end pieces contractile coil spring 31 are inserted between the links 30. Cross links 32 connect the links 30 together and the outer links 32 are connected to the side bars 18 and 19 of the head, footV and body portions of the upper section l0. Depending links 33 are connected to the links 30 and are extended around bars 35, which extend transversely across the head andV foot sections adjacent to the meeting ends thereof, and across the body section adjacent to its inner end. The links 33 encircling the bars 35 permit the spring to conform to the configuration of the frame, when the sections thereof are raised or lowered.
`Suitable. braces 36 extend transversely across the upper frame 10 Yand `have the terminals thereof bent upwardly to provide feet 37, which are securedto the vertical 4 portions of the side bars of the head, foot and body sections. These brace bars 36 are positioned adjacent to the outer ends of ,the head and foot sections and adjacent to the rear end of the body section and these braces have secured to the lower surfaces thereofA depending lstuds 38 having spaced ears 39 between which. are positioned the reduced ends 40 ofthe threaded bars 41.

Then it is desired to have the patient sit up or in a reclining position, the cranks 53 are rotated, so as to turn the shafts 43, which through the medium of the worm 44, and the worm wheels 45, will elevate the threaded bars 41 and thus elevate the head, body and foot sections. Each shaft is rotated as much as desired so as to position each section in the desired place. The head and foot sections are made in two parts, so that when the same are raised or lowered the parts will spread so to allow the upper endsof the threaded rods to be at all times positioned directly over the boxes 46.
The upper frame 10 may also be raised, when so desired, when the sections are all in alinement with each other.
In practice, l have found that the form of my invention illustrated in the aecompanying drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and 'pim-tical; yet realizing the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, desire to emphasize that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be rcsorted to, when required without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention as set forth.
lVhat I claim as new is:
1. An invalids bed comprising a lower rigid frame, an upper frame formed of a plurality of hinged sections, depending threaded rods carried by each section, transverse shafts carried by the lower frame and positioned one below each section, boxings secured to the frame for receiving the shafts, worm wheels carried by the boxings and mounted respectively upon said threaded rods, and worm screws mounted on shafts for engaging said worm wheels, as and for the purpose specified.
2. An invalids bed comprising a lower rigid frame, an upper frame including head, foot and body sections, means hingedly connecting the meeting ends of the sections together, depending threaded bars carried by each section, means carried by the lower frame for receiving and adjusting each threaded bar, the head and foot sections of the upper frame being formed of slidably connected portions to allow for wntraction or extension of these sections as the threaded bars are adjusted, as and for the purpose specified.
