MIA. REILLY.
BOOK 0R SHEET MUSIC OPENER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 29, 1918.

,MABEL' nEI morFa EvILLE, NEWFYORK.
Book on sneer-Mus c O ENER,
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, MABEL A. REILLY, a citizen of-"the United States of America, residing at Freeville, in the county of Tompkins and State :of. New York,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book or Sheet-Music Openers, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of my invention is the provision of a book orsheet music opener adapted for retaining pages in spread out flat position for use and easily adjustable for the changing of the pages, while the device is cheap and inexpensive to manufacture.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device combining practi-v cability with simplicity and serviceable for such purposes as retaining music in its open arrangement upon an instrument or a music rackwhile the same may also be employed .in connection with any .form of book that may be found desirable. 7
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood the same consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and then claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this application, and in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a music book upon a rack held in its open position by means of my device;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the device mounted upon leaves of music, the device being indicated by dotted lines to show the manner of detaching the same as well as the fact that a greater number of leaves may be readily held in position; and. r
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of. the de- 7 vice detached and partially broken away.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, my device comprises a holder formed of a single piece of wire of suitable resiliency so that the same may be easily and quickly manufactured at a minimum expense.
The resilient wire is bent in the form of a central U-shaped loop 10 with the adjacent portions of the wire extending from the opposite sides 11 of said loop bent 1nto substantially triangular shaped formations 12 when taken with the said sides of the loop.
Specification of Letters Patent. P t t d.J j Application filed-June 29. 1918. swam. 1242,5154.
Oppositely projecting arms 13 constituting the end portions of the wire .at substantially opposite sides of the loop 10Iwith the arms 18 in axial alinement with eachother and having termlnal beads 14 which constitute the extreme opposite ends of the device.
The I triangular portions .12 being readily grasped between the thumb and forefinger of the personusing the device, the same may be easily forced upon either the upper or lower ed e of a book or leaves, such as the book 15, having a plurality of leaves 16, herein illustrated. in Fig. 1, mounted uponthe usual form of music rack 17 which are employed by musicians, for instance in a band or an orchestra.
The loo 10 is positioned behind the book 15 with t 'e edge portion of the book entering the triangular portions 13 so that the arms 13 flatly engage the leaves 16.
The beads 14; are in a plane substantially parallel with the plane of the loop 10 so as to flatly engage the exposed pages of the leaves which are retained plainly viewable with the book open by means of the arms 13.
It will be understood that the resiliency of the wire forming the device retains the same in its operative position upon the book or leaves untiLit is desired to close the book or turn over one of the leaves thereof and at which time the device is readily removed and thereafter reattached in its operative position. 7
.It will be readily understood that the device maybe applied to books of different thicknesses and either to the top, bottom or one of the sides thereof, while more than one device may be employed upon a single book if desired.
While the form of the invention herein shown as described is believedjto be the preferable embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
.What I claim as new is 1. A device for holding a book distended with its pages flat together when the book is open comprising a central wire portion of substantially U shape adapted to lie the central portion and in the direction oi the length of the base of the latter to provide a pair of relatively long arms adapted to bear against the two pages of the open' book for the Inajorportion of the width of said pages. 7 V i 2. A devicefor holding a book distended with its pages flat together when the book is open-rcomprislng a central wire portion of substantially U shape adapted to lie against theback of a'book at the center thereof, the ends of the Wire forming the s central portion extending in spaced relation 1 and at an inclination mayhem and then toward the plane of said central portion to a point adjacent the base of the latter for engaging the two pages of the open book ad acent toa'nd at opposite sides of the center of the latter, the ends of the wire further extending in opposite directions in a'plane parallel to the plane of the centra-lportion and in the direction of the length of the base of the latter to'provide apair of relatively long arms adapted to bear against the two pages of the ,open book. for the maj orportion of the width of said pages.v
In testimony whereof I aflix my-signature MABEL A; REILLY.
