Description
G. W. CLARK. PORTABLE SHLF. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 2l. |9121- Lj PatentdAug. 28,1917.
GEORGE W. CLARK, 0F JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.
PORTABLE SHELF.
Application filed February 21, 1917.
To all @07mm t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. CLARK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Shelves, of which the following` is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a portable shelf and has for its principal object the production of a shelf which may be easily attached to and detached from a support.
Another object of this invention is the production of a shelf provided with a bail which bail is adapted to be attached to a support in such a manner as to hold the body portion of the shelf in a horizontal position.
A still further object of this invention is the production of a shelf which is struck from a blank sheet of metal and is provided with integral teeth adapted to engage a support.
A still further object of this invention is the production of a supporting bail which is provided with an engaging loop which will extend parallel to the support.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing the same attached to a support.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device showing the same attached to a support.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the device.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical section taken through the device.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the body portion of the shelf is formed.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary bottom plan view 'of a modified form of the device.
Fig. 7 is a vertical section taken through the modified form.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, it will be seen that l represents a support which is provided with the nail 2. Upon the nail 2 is held the bail 3 which is provided with the loop 4, which loop 4 engages the nail 2. This bail 3 is provided upon one end with the arm 5 which extends at right angles and in the same plane with the bail. Upon the other end of the bail is provided the arm 6 which extends at an angle of about 80 from the corresponding portion of the bail. These arms 5 and 6 are adapted to pass through the depending side portions 7 of the shelf 8.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2%, i917.
Serial No. 150,129.
The shelf 8 is struck from a sheet of metal so as to provide the body portion 9 and the depending side portions 7. A pair of these side portions 7 are provided with apertures l0 which receive the arms 5 and 6. One of the remaining depending side portions is provided with the integral teeth 11. It will be seen that the side portions 7 are bent along thedotted lines 12 at right angles to the body portion 9, and that the teeth 11 are bent so as to extend at right angles to the depending portion 7. It will be noted that the apertures lO are situated about a fourth of the distance of the entire side portion from one end thereof.
The arms 5 and 6 are placed within the apertures 10 and the loop 4 is placed over the nail 2 and the shelf is pressed or forced toward the support so that the teeth 11 will penetrate the same as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
It should be noted that the loop 4 when the shelf is in the position shown in Figs. l and Q, will extend parallel to the support 1. It should also be noted that the. arm 6 will vhold the shelf 8 in a horizontal position while the loop 4 is being placed over the nail 2 and while the operator is forcing the teeth 11 into the support 1. This construction is clearly shown in Fig. 4 for when the loop 4 is extending at an angle of about 45 from the shelf 8, the end of the arm G will engage the bottom of the body portion 9 of the shelf 8. This arm 6 will have enough strength and will bear suiiiciently upon the bottom face of the body portion 9 to hold the shelf 8 in the desired horizontal position until the same is forced into engagement with the support by means of the teeth 11.
By referring to Figs. 6 and 7, it will be seen that a slightly modified form has been produced. The bail in this modified form is substantially of the same construction; that is, it is provided with the U-shaped bail 3 and is also provided with a loop 4 which will engage a nail or other supporting means. The arms 13 upon the modified form will pass through the body portion 9 of the shelf and will be bent so as to converge toward the plane of the bail 3, from which fact it will be seen that they will rest snugly upon the under face of the body portion 9 so as to support the shelf in a horizontal position when the bail is in engagement with a suport. .p From the above description it will be seen that a portable shelf has been produced which may be easily attached to a support because of the fact that When the bail is being placed in its proper position, the shelf proper will be in a substantially horizontal" position so that the teeth 11 may be easily forced in to engagement with the support. It Will also be noted that a shelf has been produced which is formed from a blank of metal in such a manner as to form the body portion Which has the depending side nor tions, one of said side portions having teeth struck therefrom which teeth will extend in the same plane as the body portion and engage a support so as to hold up the inner portion of the shelf when the same is in operation.
What is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a shelf, a bail adapted to engage said shelf, said bail being bent intermediate its ends so as to form a loop, said loop 4being bent out of alinement with the plane of said bail so that when the device is in ope-ration said loop will extend parallel With the support. n
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a shelf With a bail, said bail formed from a strand of Wire and bent so as to form a substantially U-shaped body portion a. loop provided in the middle of the valley 'of the U, said loop being bent out of alinement with the body portion of said bail, said bail provided upon one end with an arm extending in the same plane with said bail and `at right angles to its adjacent portion, the other end of said bail-being bent at an angle of approximately 80O so as to form an arm which extends in the same plane with the body portion of, said bail whereby the last-mentioned arm will engage the bottom portion of the shelf so as to normally hold theu same in a horizontal position When the device is in operation.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a shelfavith a bail, said bail formed from a single strand of Wirev and adapted to be bent in substantially U-shape, a loop provided intermediate the end portions of said bail Vand bent out of alinement With the plane of the body portion of said bail, said bail being bent at its end portions so as to form arms converging toward the plane of said bail, said arms adapted to go through the body portion of the shelf and bear upon the bottom face of the same so as to normally hold said shelf ina horizontal position.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a shelf Witha bail, said bail adapted to enga-ge said shelf and to be bent so as to be attached to a support, said shelf adapted to be formed from blank metal so as to form a square body portion, depending side portions adapted to v*be bent at right angles to `said body portion, .one of said depending side portions adapted to have teeth a struck therefrom, said teeth extending at right angles to said depending side portion and parallel to said body portions, said teeth adapted to engage said support so as to hold up the inner portion of said shelf,`
when the same is in operation.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
GEORGE WV. CLARK.
