Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. REED, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Houston, Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller Boring-Drills, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boring drills of the type having roller forms of cutters and particularly those employing roller cutters of frusto-conical shape.
The invention consists in the features and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a cutter head carrying the cutter members and embodying my improvement.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the members of the housing composing the cutter head, the view being taken of the inside face of said member.
In these drawings, 1 indicates a pair of frusto-conical toothed rolls arranged with their axes substantially convergent and at right-angles to each other, said rolls being mounted on suitable bearings or pins mounted in or formed with the housing, which is shown as composed of two sections 2, 2, the inner faces of which meet along the line 33. Each of these housings has a semi-circular stem portion 4 which is screwthreaded to receive the tubular member shown at 5 in dotted lines, this tubular member by its rotation carrying the head around with it, so that the rotary cutters 1, 1 will perform their cutting action, the line X in Fig. 2 indicating the line of cut, or in other words the circumference of the hole which will be bored by the instrument. Rotation of the cutter head takes place in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 2. The cutters may be oifset in relation to each other, as shown in Fig. 2, or they may be arranged with their axes in the same vertical plane.
Dowel pins, indicated at 6, serve to center the two sections of the head in proper relation to each other. In order to provide for clearing away any of the material cut from the Walls of the hole being bored, and which would otherwise accumulate on the cutters and interfere with their proper operation I provide a special construction of the casing or housing members, whereby the water introduced down through the pipe 5 and through the channels or passages 7 will be rendered most effective in keeping the roller cutters clear from accumulations of the out material.
As above stated, the housing or casing is formed in sections and each section is pro- Vided with an inwardly extending wall at 8 lying substantially parallel with and close to the adjacent side of the cutter with a narrow space 9 between it and the side of the cutter, and these inwardly inclined wall portions 8 of the separate sections merge into other inclined portions 8 of the opposite section of the housing or casing and these lower inclined wall portions 8 lie close to the other sides of the frusto-conical cutters and parallel therewith.
Each housing section is provided on its inner face, or the face which contacts with the companion section, with an opening 10, Fig. 3, extending from the bottom of the housing section part way up of the inner face thereof and when the two sections are together as shown in Fig. 2 and the roller cutters are in place the spaces a and b of the opposing sections of the housing will be in communication with each other through these openings 10, these spaces a and 6 being adjacent the tip or small ends of the roller cutters.
Water introduced through the pipe 5 and the passageways 7 will be confined by the inclined walls 8, 8 to do its work in the most effective manner by reason of it being directed to just the points where clearing the accumulated material is desired to be efiected and this clearing water is free to pass from space a to b or the reverse and through the narrow spaces as at 9.
The housing may be made in a greater number of parts than two, and I have indicated at y, y, points or planes of division between the sections, there being in this instance four sections the line 33 indicating the line of division between the middle sections.
What I claim is:
1. A boring drill having frusto-conical roller cutters arranged with their axes at right-angles to each other and with their conical faces contiguous, a housing inclosing the top, back and side portions of the cutters in Fig. 1, in dotted lines the and at said side portions having the inner no faces of their walls inclining inwardly and downwardly to conform substantially to the inwardlv convergent conical sides of the cutters and with a narrow passage between these downwardly and inwardly inclining faces and the said conicalportions of the cutters, said housing having a conduit leading to the space within it for delivering water thereto, the narrow passage confining the water to work upon cut material to clear the same from the cutters, substantially as described.
2. A boring drill having frusto-conical roller cutters arranged with their axes at right-angles to each other and with their conical faces contiguous, a housing composed of sections with means for holding the sections together, said housing inclosing the top, back and side portions of the cutters and at said side portions having their walls inclinin inwardly and downwardly to conform suistantially to the inwardly convergent conical sides of the cutters and with a narrow passage between these downwardly and inwardly inclining walls and the said conical portions of the cutters, said housing .having a conduit leading to the space within it for delivering water thereto, the narrow passage confining the water to work upon cut material to clear the same from the cutters, substantially as described.
3. A boring drill having frusto-conical roller cutters arranged with their axes at right angles to each-other and with their conical faces contiguous, 'a housing composed of sections with means for holding the sections together, said housing inclosing the top, back and side portions of the cutters and at said side portions having the inner faces of their walls inclining inwardly and downwardly to conform substantially to the inwardly convergent conical sides of the cutters and with a narrow passage between these downwardly and inwardly inclining faces and the said conical portions of the cutters, said housing having a conduit leading to the space within it for delivering water thereto, the narrow passage confining the water to work upon cut material to clear the same from the cutters, the meeting faces of the sections of the housing having openings alining with each other to accommodate the cutters where their conical faces substantially meet, substantially as de scribed.
