Description
J. DOURSON,
Improvement in Sofa Bedsteads.
Patented Feb. 13, 1'872.
TETES nrrnn JACOB DOURSON, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SOFABEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,620, dated February 13, 1872; antedated February l, 187:2.
'fully understand'and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side view, showing the sofabedstead when adapted as a sofa. Fig. 2 is a perspective view ofthe saine. Fig. 3 is a side view ofthe mattress-frame.
In the drawing, similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
rIhe nature of my invention consists in making the mattress-frame movable instead of stationary, as in my old invention; in the addition, also, of a front rail, securing greater strength thereby, and a longitudinal middle rail, to hold the ends more firmly together, with a back rail, also longitudinal, correspond'- ing with the front rail when used as a bedstead 5 and in the further addition of a swivel ortlysupport fastened to the said middle rail, turning at right angles from its resting lon gitudinal position, and, assuming a transverse bearing, offering a good and strong support to the slats of the mattress-frame.
F F represent the mattress-frame, which is made entirely separate from the bedstead, and is arranged to t in between the front and back rails a a, being movable at option.` a a represent the addition of a front rail, which gives strength and solidity to the whole structure, and at the same time adds to the better appearance, when viewed with regard to taste and style. This rail is mortised on each end, and iits into a tenen made on the inside face of each of the side pieces, as shown by a a.
On the inner face of. both the front and back rail I fix horizontal strips or ledges e e,on which rests the new swivel or {1y-support, to be hereinafter more fully described. l have also affixed to the top of the mattress-frame, when folded as a sofa, a cap or rail, d d, which gives a better iinish 4to the whole, and when let down as a bedstead is to be placed in position by mortise and tenen as a back` rail, corresponding to the front rail, and thereby giving still more strength to the whole. To the middle rail I have attached a support, C, for the mattress-frame, which works on a swivel or y, b', and when the whole is arranged as a sofa, lies along the middle rail in a horizontal position; but when the bed is to be made this support is raised slightly to clear it from the middle rail, and then turned in a transverse direction until it is brought at right angles with its normal position; then the ends rest upon the horizontal strips or ledges e c, hereinbefore described, thus offering its strength to the support of the longitudinal strips of the mattress. e i
'Ihe middle rail l) b is also new, upon which is fastened the support last described, and this rail adds materially to the strength, and firmly holds the end pieces together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The hinged mattress-frame ff, constructed and arranged to operate in combination with the swinging end pieces a', substantially as described. l
2. The folding end pieces a with the detachable rail a, constructed and arranged to operate as set forth.
3. The Central supporting-rail C, hinged to fold down out of the wa ,and pivoted to turn at right angles to the main frame, substantially as shown and described.
