To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Go'r'rrnrnn E. SCHWEIZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Lamps for Automobiles; and do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a head lamp for automobiles and has for an object to improve the construction whereby the direct rays may be intercepted by an adjustable screen and thereby avoid a dazzling light being shown in the eyes of those approaching.
Another object is to provide laterally disposed red and green lights -on the screen so as'to guide a person approaching in passing on the green light side and avoiding the danger side.
rlhe invention further resides in the features of construction, and the arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter dcscribed and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein- Figure l is a horizontal section through a head lamp illustrating the present invention in top plan;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the present invention as embodied in a head lamp;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof;
Fig. l illustrates the invention as applied to head lamps when two are employed on the front of a vehicle, and,
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section through a. lamp illustrating a further modification.
Referring particularly to Figs. l, 2 and 3, the preferred form of the invention is depicted as comprising an inner, fixed hemispherical screen l, which is provided with a sleeve part 2, and a movable, outer hemi spherical screen 3 that is pivoted to the fixed screen at substantially diametrically opposite points, as indicated at 4f.
The inner screen or screen section l has its sleeve part 2 mounted on the lam socket 5 for supporting the screen section a ove the lamp 6, said section further being cutaway, as at 7, in its forward edge portion through which the light rays may pass in diverging lateral courses.

The outer screen section 3 is provided with lateral openings 8 in the left one of which is inserted a green glass and in the right one a red glass, said openings being registrable with the cut away portions or recesses 7 to permit of the light rays being projected through the glasses at a higher angle, as viewed in Fig. 3.
The outer screen is adjusted on the inner screen so as to intercept the direct rays of light that would otherwise pass upwardly with a dazzling effect on those approaching, and permit the rays to shine from the bottom onto the road. The movable outer screen is retained at the desired adjustmentI by set screw 9 that impinges against the fixed screen.
Thus, upon proper adjustment of the outer screen, the direct light rays will be screened so as not to dazzle the eyes of those approaching. rlhe lateral red and green lights further aid an approaching person by directing him to pass the vehicle on the left and avoid the red or danger side.
In case there is only one head light on an automobile, the red and green side lights would be provided as just described, so that the red light would always show on the right hand side of the automobile and the green light on the left side, this being in accordance with the usual traiic rules which requlre an approaching vehicle to pass to the right and an overtaking vehicle to pass to the left.
Where two head lamps are employed it is necessary to have only one lateral opening in the outer section of each screen, such opening being disposed toward the adjacent side of the vehicle so as to direct the rays outwardly, as shown at 10 in Fig. 4. In this instance the left light or glass will be green and the right li ht red, as is obvious.
ln the modification depicted in Fig. 5, both screen sections are pivotally supported between the forks of a bracket 11, the latter having a sleeve part l2 which slips over the lamp socket 5. The inner screen 13 has its rear edge concaved to closely lit the base of the lamp whereas the outer section la carries the set screw 15 for securing the screens relatively Xed.
in either' form it is obvious that the lamp may be completely enveloped by the screens so as to shut cut all light whatsoever, or said screens may be adjusted to provide a small or large volume of light as conditions require. F

lVhat is claimed is:
1. A screen for head lamps comprising, in combination with a lamp socket, an inner hemispherical screen section having its forward edge provided with lateral recesses, an outer hemispherical screen section pivoted to the first screen section and provided with red and green lights registra-ble with the recesses thereof, and means for mounting the screen sections.
2. In a screen for head lamps, an inner hemispherical screen section, an outer heini, spherical screen section pivoted thereto, laterally disposed green and red lights provided Lessines in the outer section, and means for mounting the sections.
3. In a screen for head lamps, an inner hemispherical screen section, an outer hemispherical screen section pivoted thereto, laterally disposed green and red lights provided in the outer section, and means for mounting the sections including a sleeve support.
4L. In a screen for head lamps, an inner screen section, an outer screen section, a sleeve support having a forked bracket part, and means pivotally connecting the screen sections to the forked bracket part.
5. A screening device for head lamps, comprising a pair of pivoted screen sections 0f spherical curvature, a light aperture in each of the sections laterally disposed on opposite sides respectively, and means for mounting the screens.
