Be it known that I, EDWIN L. VVHrrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Socket Connections for Lighting-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to socket connections for the ends of tubes carrying the conductor wires in electric lighting fixtures. These connections have heretofore been made of a brass casting provided in the top with a threaded hole to receive the end of the tube, and having at one side another smaller threaded opening into which is screwed a hollow exteriorly threaded stud with one end projecting to receive the lamp socket, there being a passage way between the two openings for the conductor wires. These castings are heavy and the stud is liable to work loose or become detached in removing a socket. The object of my present invention is to economize in the cost of such connections by greatly reducing the quantity of metal used; dispensing with the necessity for screwing the socket receiving stud into the body portion and preventing any possibility of the stud being turned when a socket is removed from it.

By means of a punch and die, a hole is punched in the center of the disk 14, forming'a downwardly projecting tubular por tion 15, which is afterward internally screwthreaded.
On one side of the downwardly inclined projection or arm 16 upon the lower end of which there is an exteriorly screw-threaded nipple 17, having a flange 18 at its junction with the arm 16.
The disk 14, tubular projection15,'arm 16, and nipple 17, are preferably formed of one piece of metal, the nipple being formed by means of a punch and die, in a manner similar to that in forming the projection 15, the exterior being threaded after its removal from the die by any suitable tool. The interior of the nipple is smooth and is curved outwardly at its junction with the flange 18 to leave a smooth rounding surface at this point for to contact with.

The upper edge of the body member 10 is then upset or turned inward over the upturned edge of the disk thus securely locking the disk and nipple in position within the body, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The device is now ready for attachment to a fixture and to receive a lamp socket, as illustrated in Fig. 5, in which 20, indicates the tubular arm of a bracket or other fixture, the threaded end of which is screwed into the central threaded tubular projection 15, on the disk 14, the lamp socket 21, being screwed onto the projecting nipple 17, and against the boss 13, which boss strengthens the shell 10, at the opening preventing any tendency to buckle the shell.
The conductor wires (not shown) pass into the hollow body 10, from the tubular arm 20, and through the nipple 17 the interior of which being smooth and curved at its junction with the flange 18 as described,

By the employment of my invention there is adargesaving in'material,and-cost of manufacture the socketreceiving' nippleis securely held in proper position at all times and cannot be loosenedor displaced in removing a socket, and the nipple provides a smooth interior which "prevents inj ur to the conductor Wires.
