I Vi l ne-AA ABRAHAM LAPEDES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WINDOW-CLEANING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1th, 191?.
Application filed March 6, 1917. Serial No. 152,803.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM LAPnDEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful l/VindowCleaning Device, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to window cleaning devices and aims to provide a novel and improved appliance of that nature applicable to various windows, and 0p erable conveniently from the inside of the building for cleaning the outer as well as the inner surfaces of the window panes, thus eliminating the necessity of the person cleaning the window leaning or sitting through the opening, and thereby eliminating the possibility of the operator falling.
It is the object of the invention to provide a window cleaning device which can be placed within the window opening when the sashes are raised, and into which the sashes can be lowered to readily clean the panes, the device being readily applied to various windows and having novel rotary means for washing and wiping the window panes.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view of the cleaning device as seen from the inside of the window.
Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical sections taken on the respective section lines 2-2 and 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross section of one of the rotary washing and wiping members.
The frame of the present device is preferably constructed of sheet metal and structural iron, and may be of any suitable size and materials. This frame embodies outer and inner upstanding sections 1. and 2, re
about a transverse axis.
spectively, and a sheet metal or equivalent base 3. The lower end of the section 1 is riveted or otherwise secured firmly to the base, while the lower end of the section 2 is hlnged, as at 4, to the base whereby the inner section 2 can be swung a limited distance away from the section 1. The base 3 is provided with a longitudinal depressed portion providing a groove or channel 5 between the lower ends of the sections 1 and 2 for receiving the lower rail of the sash 6, as seen in Fig. 2, the sections 1 and 2 being spaced apart sufliciently to receive the sash therebetween.
Each of the sections 1 and 2 is provided with parallel vertical stiles, each stile embodying a pair of parallel T-irons or bars 7, and the guide bars 7 of each section are connected at their upper ends by a cross piece or yoke S. Slidable between each pair of guide bars 7 is a block or bearing 9, which is grooved to engage the webs of the bars 7, each section 12 having a pair of the hearings or slides 9 movable vertically within the stiles thereof. The bearings 9 are provided with pivot studs 10 projecting toward one another, and a rotary washing and wiping member is mounted between and is carried by each pair of bearings 9. Each of said members embodies a transversely elongated cylindrical water reservoir 11 provided at its ends with sockets 12 receiving the respective studs 10, whereby to mount the reservoir for rotary movement The reservoir is provided with a plurality of longitudinal instruck channels 13 in its periphery in which rubber or equivalent squeegees 14 are seated. Said Squeegees are flexible and are adapted to bear against and wipe along the surface of a window pane, and one squeegee 1 1 of each reservoir is provided with a suitable number of water outlet ducts 15 registering with water outlet apertures 16 with which the respective channel 13 is provided, as seen in Fig. 5. Thus, when the reservoir is rotated, the water contained therein can flow through the apertures 16 and ducts 15 to be applied to the window pane, so that the squeegees will serve to wash and wipe the same.
As a means for moving the reservoirs 11 vertically along the window pane, cords 17 are connected to the bearings 9 and eX- tend. upwardly therefrom and over pulleys or guides 18 suspended from the yokes 8. From the pulleys 18 the cords 17 extend downwardly along the respective stiles of the sections 12 and pass under pulleys or guides 19 carried by the base 3. Similar cords or flexible elements 17 are also connected to the bearings 9 and extend downwardly under pulleys or guides 19 mounted within the base 3. The cords extend under the channel or groove 5 from one section of the frame to the other, and it will be noted that the intermediate portions of the cords 17 extend in loop form downwardly to the base so as to pass under the sash. I Vhen the bearings 9 of the section 2 are raised, this will pull the cords 17 which will pull the bearings 9 of the outer section 1 downwardly, and when the bearings 9 of the sec tion 2 are lowered, this will pull the cords 17 which will raise the bearings 9 of the section 1. The bearings and reservoirs at the outer and inner sides are therefore moved in opposite directions simultaneously.
In order to rotate the reservoirs or rotary cleaning members simultaneously at the different positions thereof, an endless sprocket chain or equivalent member 20 is trained around the reservoirs or members 11 near one end thereof, and said chain extends downwardly from the reservoirs into the base 3, and is guided under pulleys or guides 21 mounted within the base from one section of "the frame to the other under the channel or groove 5, as seen in Fig. 2. When one loop of the chain is raised with the reservoir, the other loop is lowered, whereby the chain will remain taut, due to the fact that the two reservoirs move in opposlte window are raised, and the device is then placed within the window frame on the sill thereof, the base 3 resting on the sill, and one sash is then lowered between the sections 1 and 2, the section 2 being swung inwardly to facilitate the lowering of the sash. After the sash islowered into place, as seen in Fig. 2, the section 2 is swung against the sash, and the reservoirs can then be rotated as above described, for cleaning the window pane, and said reservoirs are raised and low-.
ered to clean the window pane from top to bottom. After one sash has been cleaned, it is 'aised, and the device is shifted slightly so that the other sash can be lowered into it for cleaning. When the sashes are raised, the device is readily removed and applied to another window, and it will be noted that it is not necessary for the operator to reach, lean or sit through the window for cleaning the outer surfaces of the window panes, thus avoiding danger to life and limb.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A window cleaning device embodying a frame having spaced upstanding sections for receiving a sash therebetween, bearings slidable along said sections, cleaning members movably carried by said bearings, a
flexible connectionbetween the bearings for reciprocating them, and a flexible connection between the cleaning members for moving them relatively to the bearings at the various positions thereof.
2. A window cleaning device embodying a frame, bearings slidable along the frame,
a rotary reservoir between and carried by said bearings, squeegees carried by the reservoir, one of the squeegees having means for the flow of water from the reservoir, means for sliding said bearings, and means for rotating the reservoir.
3. A window cleaning device embodying a frame having spaced sections for receiving a sash therebetween, bearings slidable along said sections, rotary members car-' ried by the bearings having Squeegees, flexible elements connecting said bearings of the two sections, and a flexible connection between the rotary members. I
4:. A window cleaning device embodying a frame having a base and spaced sections connected thereto, bearings slidable along said sections, rotary members carried by the bearings and'having squeegees, flexible elements connecting said'bearings and extend ing along said sections to the base and guided within the base from one section to the other, and an endless flexible element passed around said rotary members and ex- .tending through and guided within the base from'one section to the other. g
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aifixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
