To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK 'IARlN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, and a resident of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have il'ivented new and, Improved Grind mi;- Machine, of which the following is a in 1, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to machines for grinding and polishing raw castings of the 1 rings of ball hearings such, for instance, as shown and described in the application for Letters .lIfatent of the United States, No.
72,260 and No. 93,886, filed by me on January s 1.5, 1.916, and April 27, 1916, respectively.
The object of theinvention is to provide a new and'improvcd QI'l'lldlllg machine acranged to simultaneously grind three of the founfaces of a ball bearing ring 'wlthout cha ging the latter in its holding chuck.
In order to accomplish the desired result,
use is made of a revolulolo chuck. adapted to engage and hold the ring at one side theretiif, a plurality of revoluble spindles at angles one to the-other and carrying grind,- ers or grinding wheels, and actuating means for bodily nnwing the said spindles to engage one of the grinding wheels with the outer peripheral face of the ring, to engage anothergrinding wheel with the inner face of the "ring, and to engage a third grinding wheel with the other side'oi't' the ring.

The raw casting of a ball bearing ring 20 held at onevside in revolublc chuck 21 and the inner face of the ring 20 including the hall race is ground or finished by a tool, preferably in the form of a revolublc grinding wheel 22 secured on one end of a spindle 23 journaled in a head stock 24 and provided with a pulley 25 connected by a belt and pulley with an overhead countershaft for continually rotating the spindle 23 and its grinding Wheel 22. The outer side of the ring 20 is finished by a tool .in the form of a grinding Wheel 26 attached to a spindle 27 journaled in. a head stock 28 and provided with a pulley 29 connected by belt and pulley with. an overhead coun- I I tel-shaft for continually rotating the spindle at an angle to the of the chuck 21 and to the spindles 23 and 31, and one edge rnf 108 (as shown in Fig. l.) while the spindle 27 is the grinding wheel 26 serves to out the outer side of the ring to finish said outerside.
The chuck 21 is mounted on a spindle 34 journaled in a head stock 35 and provided with a pulley 36 connected by belt and pullay with a 'countershaft for continually rotating the spindle 34 and the chuck 21 holdversely adjustableion the guideways 40 by.

outer end of the screw rod 42 is provided with a worm wheel 44 (see Fig. 3) in mesh with a worm 45 formed or secured on a longitudinally extending shaft. 46 journaled in suitable bearings arranged on the bed plate 41. The left-hand end of the shaft 46 18 provided with a suitable handle-47 under .the control of the operator for turning the shaft 46 with a view to rotate the screw rod 42 and thereby shift the carriage 37 and it's head stock 35 in a transverse direction. It is understood that on turning the screwrrod 38, the head stock 3 5 is shifted in a longitudinal direction so as to move the chuck 21 and the ring 20 held thereby in proper position relative to the grinding wheels 22, 26 and 30.
The head stock 24 carrying the spindle 23, provided with the binding wheel 22, is mounted to slide transversely on guideways 50 formed on the top of a slide 51 mounted to slide longitudinally in guidewa-ys 52 formed on the top of a support 53 secured at its forward end on a vertically disposed pivot 54'journaled in a suitable bearing 55 arranged on a ,shaft 56 mounted to slide 101 tudinQl-y'in guideways 57 forming 'art Hi P of t e body plate all i The head stock 24 is provided with a nut 60 in which screws a feed screw 61 provided at its forward end with a handle -62 under the control of the operator to permit of shifting the head 24 in a transverse direction to correctly set the grinding wheel 22 relative to the inner surface of the ring 20. The slide 51 is provided with a set screw 63 adapted to abut against the right-hand'end of the support 53 to limit the movement from the right tothe left of the slide 51, The top of the slide 51' is provided with a pin 64 projecting through a slot 65 formed in a transverse .lcvcr 66 fulcrumed at its rear end at 67 on the top of the support 53. By the operator nianipulating the handle 66 the slide 51 can be lifted from the left to the right or back to the adjusted position, that is, until the set -tion is given to the main drivin screw 63abuts against the right-hand end of the su port 53. 4

The stud 7% disk 79 provide with a diametrical tongue 80 slidably engaging the groove 75 in the disk 76. On loosening the stud 74 the disk 76 and with it the stud 74 can be adjusted more or loss out of center relative to the center of the disk 76 to increase or decrease the stroke given by the stud 74 and the pitman 73 to the rack 71: ()n the upper end of the shaft 77 is secured a pinion 81 in mesh with a gear wheel 82 mounted to rotate on a vertical. shaft 83 journaledin a suitable' bearing of a support 84 forming part of the framework of the machine.

When the clutch 88 is in engagement with the clutch member- 89 and the cone pulley 90 is rotated then a rotary moshaft 87 which by the pinion 86 and the evel gear wheel 85 rotates the gear wheel 82. The rotary motion of the latter is transmitted by the pinion 81 to the shaft 77 to rotate the disks 76 and 79 witha view to impart 'a reciprocating motion to the rack 71, as pre; viously mentioned.
The gear wheel 82 is in mesh at its righthand side with a pinion 91 secured on the upper end of a vertically disposed shaft 92 journaled on the bearing support 84. The lower end of the shaft 92 is provided with a disk 93 having a diametrical groove 94 engaged by a tonguc'flfz formed on a roller 96 attached ecceutrically to the disk 93 by a stud 97 engaging the groove 94. 1n order to feed the several grinding wheels 22, 26 and 30 for making diii'erent cuts on'the corresponding faces of the ring 20 until the said faces are ground to the proper size, use is made oi? automatic feeding devices practically alike in constructions so that it suliiees to describe but one in detail, it being, howcvpr, understood that the feeding devices are mounted on the feed screws 61, [25 and 160, respectively, special reference being had to Figs. 1, 6 and 8. On the corresponding teed screw 61, 125 or 160 is secured a ratchet wheel 170 engaged by a spring-pressed pawl 171 fulcrunied on a lever 172 mounted to swing loosely on the COI'IOSPOHdlIlg feed screw 61, v125 or 160.
One end of the lever 172 is pressed-on by a 17 3' and the other end of the said lever is provided with a cam 174 adapted to en age a cam175 secured on. the top of thebe plate 41. When the corresponding carcndof its stroke the cam 17 t of the lcver172 clutchesthe cam 175 whereby a carrying motion is given to the lever 172 to cause the pawl 171 to turn the ratchet wheel 170 so that the corresponding feed screw 61, 125 or 160 ie-turned to set the grinding wheel for making another out on the corresponding face of the ring 20.
' The oscillating movement of thelever 1.72 is limited by stops 176 and 177 attached to the corresponding carriage of the grinding wheel 22, 26 or 30.
In order to stop each feed mechanism after the desired number of cuts have been use is made of an arm 178'secured on the corresponding feed screw 61, 125 or 160 and adapted-toengage a-pin 179 on the pawl 171 to throw the latter out of engagement with the ratchet wheel 170, thus stopping further turning of the corresponding feed screw.
The operation is as follows: I
The grinding wheels 22, 26 and 30 are T shown at the beginning of the operation and when the machine is running the several carriages 56, 112 and 133 are moved simultaneously,that is, the carriages 56 and 133 are caused to move from the right to the left while the carria 112 is moved transversely toward the rent so that the grinding wheel 22 grinds the inner face of the ring 20,-the grinding wheel 30 grinds the peripheral face of the ring 20, and the grinding wheel 26 grinds the outer side of the' said ring 20. When the carriage 56 nears the end of its stroke to the left then a swinging motion is given to the support 63 by turning the pivot 54 as previously exwith it the cutter 22 to $16 respectively (see Fig. 2

The grinding wheels 22, 26 and 30 at their nextiorward movement take off another chip, and this operation is repeated until the three faces of the ring 20 are properly finished, at which time the arms 17 8 engage the pins 179 and'throw the pawls 171 out of engagement with the ratchet wheels 170 thus stopping further feeding of the feed accomplished by the action of the corresponding springs 1.00, 121 and 142. It is a so understood that the studs 74 and 97' are set relative to each other so that at the beginning of the movement of the carriage 56 the stud 74 has. a slower longitudinal travel than the stud 97 and hence the pivot 54 is not turned, but when the carriage 56 nears the end. of its stroke the stud 74 travels'faster in a longitudinal direction than the stud. 97 and hence the pivot 54 is turned to swing the sup ort 53 sidewise and old the latter at all times inradial position in the ball race of the ring 20. In case the ball race of an outer or inner ring only is to be finished either interiorly or exteriorly then the stud 97 is moved into a central position on the disk '93 to stop the reciprocation of the carriage 56 but to allow the support 53 to swing sidewise.
