FLOYD C. FURLOW, OF MONTCLAIR, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO OTIS ELEVATOR COM- PANY, 0F JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
ELEVATOR-DOOR MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 29, 1917.
Application filed August 20, 1915. Serial No. 46,419.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLOYD C. FURLOW, a
Montclair, in the county of Essex and tate of New Jersey have invented a new and'use ful Improvement in Elevator-Door Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to elevator apparatus, and more particularly to an improved mode of operation and system of control for elevator hatchway gates, theinvention being more particularly adapted for use in conjunction with freight elevators.
In certain elevator installations involving the transportation of power or hand operated vehicles such as baggage trucks, auto mobiles, street cars, etc., it is found desirable to do away with the services of a permanent elevator operative; the idea being that the operative of the power vehicle shall operate the elevator car also. In the furtherance of this idea, it is desirable to provide means which shall require no manual effort on the part of the operative, for controlling the operation of the hatchway gates. To this end it is one of the objects of the present invention toprovide improved means for operating the hatchway gates, together with a novel system of control, the said system being controllable by the power vehicle itself upon approaching the elevator car or upon leaving the latter, one of the most essential features residing in the-automatic closing of the hatchway gate after the exit of the vehicle from the elevator car, this arrangement eliminating the objectionable feature of an operative having to stop his vehicle to go back and close' the gate.
Other novel features of the invention will be set forth fully hereinafter, the novel combinations and arrangement of parts being set forth in the appended claims.
In-the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 illustrates more or less diagrammatically a push button elevator system together with my improved means for operating the hatch way gates and a controlling system therefor, the various parts assuming such relative positions as obtained with the "hatchway gates closed; Fig. 2 is a View somewhat simi lar to Fig. 1 but with the partlsf assuming such relative position as attend the open hatchway gates, a modified system of control for the hatchway gates being also illustrated 5* in this'view. o
With reference more particularly to Fig. 1, the elements will first be designated, and the operation thereof described thereafter.
The elevator car C, may be driven in any well known manner, and by any well known means, such for example as by the motor M the latter being rovided with a shunt field winding S. lectro-magnetic reversing switches R, R control the direction of rotation of the motor, and an accelerating mag net A controls the motor starting resistance X. A fioor'controller B, floor magnets C, non-interference magnet D, door cont-acts a3, hall push buttons 6 and car push buttons 0 operate in a well known manner to control the operation of the elevator car C. The parts thus far described are well known in the art, the push button system of control being substantially the same as shown in the Ihlder Patent, No. 683,689, granted October 1,1901, thus such elements have been described only in general, since they form no particular part of the present invention.
Coming now to the elements which more essentially constitute the subject matter of the present invention, such will be described more in detail. Elevator floor or hatchway landings are designated 1 and 2, these landings being of a special construction, and each being provided with a set of vertically movable gates G, the gates on one side of the hatchway being termed entrance and the ate on the opposite side exit. The provision of the two gates at each landing, eliminates any possible interference between vehicles passing on and off the elevator at the same time, it being proposed that the gates on one side of the hatchway shall be 98 used as the approach or entrance, and the gates on the opposite side of the hatchway as exit, this system being also convenient for the vehicle drivers since it eliminates backing of the vehicle ofi of the elevator 100 platform.
At each exit landing there is provided two yieldable floor sections H, these sections being spaced apart a distance corresponding lent instance each of these floor sections is device 5, whose contacts are normally shown hinged at one end, the sections when in normal position as shown, being flush with the adjoining floor, and the free ends of each section being supported by any sultable form of yielding element such as a coil spring 3. Associated with each floor section are electrical contacts 4, these contacts being normally open as shown, and adapted to be closed by the actuation of the floor section.
At each entrance landing there is provided a single yieldable floor section H,
which sections are made somewhat greater in length than the sections H. The sections H are hinged at one end, their free ends .being supported by any suitable yieldin element such as a coil spring 3'. Associate with each section H is an electrical switch as shown, and adapted to be opene actuation of the floor section.
Coming now particularly to my. improved gate operating mechanism, it comprises a cam member such as. J, carried by the elevator car, the cam bein pivotally connected at one of its ends 6 to t e elevator car. The cam as shown in Fig. 1 is in its inoperative or retracted position. The cam is actuated to an operatlve position, as shownin Fig. 2, by means of a small electric motor K, which actuates a windin drum 7, the drum being connected to the 5% end of the gam by a rope or cable connection 8.
There is positioned in the elevator hatchway at each landing, a pair of rails 9, upon which, rides a traveler 10. A pair of-ropes or cables 11, are connected at one oftheir ends to the elevator gates G, these cables being guided by idlers 12Jand 13, to a pulley 14 WlllCh is movable with the traveler 10, the other ends of the cables being fixed at 15. With this arrangement it will be seen that the opening or closing of both gates at a landing will be effected simultaneously, the gates being shown in closed position in Fig. 1, and in open position in Fig. 2, the opening thereof eing effected by actuation of the traveler 10, toward the right hand. The traveler is adapted to be'actuated by means of the cam J on the car, the cam coacting with a roller 16 on the traveler. The gates are maintained in their raised position by means of the cam J, there being provided on the elevator car, an electrically controlled dog, 17, which is adapted toengage a slotted portion 18 of the cam J, upon the latter attaining its full actuated position.
In this manner, the gates are maintained in opened position as illustrated in Fig. 2. The dog 17 in its operation to engage the cam J is self-acting,the same being actuated by means of a spring 18 interposed between a fixed member 19 and a collar 20 by the closed carried by the dog. The dog is disengaged from the cam by means of an electromagnet L, and the cam when released is returned to its inoperative position by means of a sprin 21. In this manner the gates are permitted to drop by their own welght to closed position.
At each landing there is provided, what I will herein term anon-interference or protective contact device, designated P, this device being controlled by the traveler 10. The device comprises simply a fixed contact 31 which is adapted to be engaged by a contact 32, movable with the traveler. As Will be noted these contacts are opened with the gates in closed position, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and with the gates in raised or open position, the contacts are closed as illustrated in Fig. 2.
Contacts 4, 4, contact device P, and switch 5, act conjointly to control a circuit for the electromagnet L, a parallel circuit for the said magnet being controlled by means of contacts 22, associated with each of the car push buttons 0. The contacts 23, associated with said buttons,'cont'rol the car operating circuit, and it is to beparticularly pointed out here, that the car push buttons are constructed in a manner such that only a single push thereon is necessary to close the contacts 22 and 23, controlling the circuits for the magnet L and car operation respectively.
At each entrance landing there is rovided a push button e by means of which the motor K is indirectly controlled, this .push button directly controlling a winding 24 of a relay magnet 0 whose contacts25 together with a switch device 26 controlled by the cam'J control a self-holding circuit for the winding 24, which circuit includes the motor K. The switch device 26 comprises a contact 27 which is movable by the cam J, over a fixed contact segment 28, the arrangement being such, that the contact 27 rides off the segment 28, when the cam attains a full actuated position and enga ed by the dog 17. The provision of the re ay magnet 0 makes it unnecessary for one to keep the push button pressed, while the motor K is performing its function of actuating the cam to its full operative position, since the relay and the switch device act conjointly, directly to control the motor K, after a push button 6 is once operated. Contacts 29 are positioned at each floor landing, a circuit therebetween being completed by means of a contact shoe 30, carried by the elevator car, this shoe with the car at the landing being adapted to span the said contacts. These contacts are included in independent circuits with the push buttons e at adapted to be engaged by the contact shoe 30 as the elevator car is ascending or descending, and having the same function as the push buttons 6, that is, they{ indirectly control a circuit for the motor The operation of the various elements and the system of electrical circuits will now be .described.
With the parts as illustrated in Fig. 1, all the elevator gates are closed with the car at the landing designated 2, or the sec- ,ond floor we will say for example. Assuming now a power vehicle rides onto the aproach landing H at the second floor. Now by pressing the button 6, the operation of the motor K is effected, which actuates the cam J, the latter in its operation by the motor, effecting the raising of both gates G simultaneously, the gates being malntained in raised position by means of the cam J which in turn is maintained in actuated position by means of the dog 17. The c1rcuits established by pressing the push button 6 may be traced as follows: from main, wire 33, relay windlng 24, wlre 34, button e, wire 35, thence to line by way of contacts 29, shoe 30, wire 36. The relay winding 24 now being energrzed effects a closing of the contacts 25, WlllGh latter establish a self holding circuit for the relay winding, this circuit includlng the motor K and switch device 26, and being as follows: wire 33, winding 24, contacts 25, w1re 37, through motor K, wire 38, through sw1tc h device 26, wires 39 and 36 to l1ne. This self holding circuit including the motor K is maintained until the contact 27 ridespfi' the segment 28, whereupon the self holding circuit is thus broken and likewise the motor circuit.
It is to be pointed out here that by providing the contacts 29, controllable by the shoe 30 on the car, makes it possible to effect an operation of the motor K, to effect the opening of the gates only by such bntton e as is located at the landing at which the elevator car is.
The gates G now being open, the vehicle rides on the elevator platform, and the operative thereof by a single thrust of the lower car push button 0 closes contacts 22 which establishes a circuit for the electromagnet L, and also the contacts. 23, wh ch establishes a circuit for the down reversing switch designated R, which directs a source of current supply to the motor M, in a manner which causes the elevator car to descend. The circuit established by the contacts 22 may be traced as follows: from wire to wire 40, to a wire 41 common to both car push buttons, contacts 22, wlres 42 and 43, through winding of electroma et L, wires 44, 36 and thence to llne. he electromagnet L now being energized effects the release of the dog 17 from the slotted portion 18 of the cam, and the spring 21 thus acts to retract the cam to its inoperative position, and thus the gates G will close by their own weight.
The car operating circuit controlled by the contacts 23 is well understood, the same being traced as follows: from wire, wire 40 to junction 45, wire 46, through winding of the non-interference magnet to wire 47, through contacts 23 to wire 48, thence through winding of the down reversing switch by way of the floor magnet and floor controller contacts, to line. The non-interference magnet now operates in a well known manner to open its contacts, thus opening the feed circuit wire 49 to the hatchway push buttons 6 and in this manner preventing interference therefrom. Upon the release of the car push button, the circuit for the Winding of the reversing switch and floor magnet is maintained through the floor magnet contacts and the floor controller contacts.
Now as the elevator car descends, the contact shoe 30 rides over the contacts 29 thus effecting the operation of the motor K to' actuate the cam J, in the same manner as by the push-buttons e heretofore described, the cam being maintained in actuated position by means of the dog 17. Now as the car descends farther, the cam J coacts with the roller 16 thus actuating the traveler 10 and in this manner effecting the raising or opening of the hatchway gates at the first floor landing. The elevator car upon reaching the first floor landing is automatically stopped by means of the floor controller in a well understood manner, the cam J now maintaining the gates in raised position.
As the vehicle passes through the exit gate and over the yieldable floor sections, the front and rear wheels thereof depressing both sections simultaneously, effects a closing simultaneously of both sets of contacts 4, which establishes a circuit for the electro-magnet L, the latter operating the dog 17 to release the cam J, which is now moved to an inoperative position by the spring 21. In this manner it is seen, the gates will now close by their own weight, it not being necessary for the operative of the vehicle to stop the same and return to close the said gates. The circuit for the electromagnet L may now be traced as follows: from wire to wire 40, to junction 40', wires 50 and 51 to contact device P whose contacts are now closed, wire 52 to switch 5, wire 53, contacts 4 to wire 54, contacts 4 to wires 55 and 56, through winding of electromagnet L and thence to line.
It is to be pointed out here that the circuit just traced includes the normally closed contact device 5, associated with the first floor entrance landing. The purpose of the switch 5, is to prevent the closing of the gates by the assage of a vehicleover the exit landing, in case there should be a. vehicle at the opposite or entrance landing. Under this condition, the vehicle in waiting at the entrance landing, depresses the yieldable floor section H, thus opening the our tact device 5, and in this manner the circuit for the electromagnet L is broken at the said contact device, and the gates will remam raised, thereby giving the operative of the vehicle at the entrance landing ample time to run his vehicle onto the elevator car. Thus when on the car, the vehicle operative presses the upper car push button, effecting the closing of the gates and the operation of the elevator car in an ascending direction. The contacts 22 of both the car push buttons have similar functions, and the contacts 23 of the upper car button effect the operation of the up reversing switch which switch closes, and directs the source of current supply to the motor M in a manner to cause the elevator car to ascend, the car being automatically stopped upon reaching the second floor in a similar manner as heretofore described for the descending car.
As the car ascends the contact shoe 30 rides over the contacts .29 effecting the actuation of the cam J, which, as the car approaches the upper floor landing, automatically effects the opening of the gates thereat, and the vehicle in passing off the car and over the exit landing, automatically effects the closing of the gates. The contact devices 5 at this landing operates in the same manner as heretofore mentioned, to prevent the gates closing in case there should be a vehicle in waiting at the entrance landing.
It is to be pointed out here that only a single yieldable floor section and contact device such as H and 4 respectively might be employed at each landing, but such a practice is considered dangerous since the gate might be caused to descend while the vehicle is part on and off the elevator car, by means of a person standing on the said section, whereas the use of two sections overcomes this danger to a great extent, it being further pointed out-that the actuation of both sections simultaneously is necessary in order to eflFect the closing of the gates. It is preferable to locate the floor section H nearest the gate, such a distance from the gate as to allow the truck to be free and clear of the gate with the latter closed, the fioor section farthest from the gate, or the one operable by the front wheels of the vehicle eing spaced accordingly.
It is to be further pointed out that each of the contact devices P are in independent circuits, each one being connected in series I with the contacts 4 of its associated landing, only, the purpose of these switches and the system of circuits being such that the operation of the electromagnet L to effect the device there would be possibility of inter-- ference, if for any reason the contacts 4 should be actuated at an exit landing which the elevator car has left, one articular instance being in case a vehicle s ould become stalled or for any other reason remain thereat.
The elevator car may be called to an landing by means of the hatchway pus buttons 6 which together with the pushbuttons e need obviously be provided only at the landings designated entrance. The system of control from the hatchway push buttons is substantially] the same as by means of the car push buttons, it being particularly pointed out-that the gate contacts at are included in series with the common feed wire 49 leading to the hatchway buttons I), thus making it impossible to call the elevator car by means of these buttons until allthe hatchway gates are closed.
Coming now to Fig. 2, it illustrates a modified mode of operation for certain of the gate controlling circuits, the most essential feature consisting in the provision of means whereby the opening of the hatchway gates may be automatically effected, simply by the passage of a vehicle onto an entrance landing, instead of by means of the push buttons e as illustrated and described in connection with Fig. 1. In carrying out this idea, there is associated with each of the contact devices 5 at the entrance landings, an additional set of contacts 57. These contacts are normally open, and are closed as indicated at the second floor landing by the depression of the floor sections H thus establishing a circuit for the winding 24 of the relay 0, which together with the contact device 26 controls a circuit for the motor K, which efi'ects an opening of the gates by actuating the cam J. Assume now the elevator car is at the second landing and the gates thereat 'closed, which would be the result in case a vehicle passed off the elevator car and over the exit landing, before a vehicle arrived on the floor portion H at the entrance landing. 'Assume further a vehicle now rides onto the second floor entrance landing thereby closing the contacts 57. The circuit controlled thereby may now be traced as follows: from F wire to wire 58, winding 24, wire 59, contacts 57, wire 60, contacts 29 and shoe 30 to wire 61 through a contact device P controllable by the traveler 10, these contacts being closed with the gates closed, and thence by way of wire 62 to line. The
operation of the relay 0 will now effect the opening of the gates in a manner just heretofore described.
. It will be noted that the contact device P is included in the circuit just traced, one of the same being provided at each floor. The purpose of these contact devices, is to form a break in the circuit controlled by the contact 57 so as to eliminate or prevent wasteful or continued flow of current such as would result 1n case a vehicle should remain at the entrance landing for a considerable parts for controlling the gate operation for the exit landing is the same as described in connection with Fig.1, and thus needs no further description.
A system for operating and controlling elevator hatchway gates such as herein described, may be used to particularly good advantage in railway terminals, wherein power operated trucks are used extensively and in conjunction with elevators, for transferring baggage, etc., between difierent floors, a further use for the system being in conjunction with automobile hoists and hoists designed for raising and lowering street cars, etc.-
