Specification of Letters atent.
implication filed ctober 3Q, 1916. Serial No. 323,570.
To all whom may concern.'
Be itlrnovvn that l, Homin LeRoy' Ems- BIN, a. citizen of the United States, resw at rfownsend, in the county of Broadivoter, State ot Montana, have invented certain ieiv and Auseful improvements in `Wrenchesg and i do li=reby dechire the 't i'ull, clear. and exact desc ption the mvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and nge the same. t i t l I This invention relates to improvements in Wrenches, and particularly to .vrcnches for removing the cover ofthe transmission goor of a Ford automobie.
@ne object' of the invention is to provide e simple and etlicient device of this characof which one man can Quickly ter by means L and nuts tron'.
and easily remove the bolts the gear casing or cover.
Another object is to provide a device of this character by means of which the nut is held stationary While the bohis'turned therethrough for removing the seme.
Another object is 'to provide a device o this character wherein the nut and bolt *wil be i'irmly held, and danger of either becoming disengaged from the Wrench reduced to a minimum.
@their objects and advantages `will he o ppzirent from 'the following. description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
in the drawing:
Figure l is e perspective view of a Wrench made in accordance with my invention.
Fi 2 is a longitudinal sectional view g e through the wrench and a portion or the gear casing showing the action of the Wrench v -on the bolt and nut.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing l() represents, as a Whole, a frame, having tvvo substantially loi-,shaped members disposed in the some plane, as shown at ll and l2, respectively, the intermediate arm 13 being common to both of said members. rlhrough theouter arm of the member ll is'formed an opening 14, and alining with this opening, and formed in the intermediate arm, is an opening l5. The outer end of the outer arm or the memto receive or embrace the nut 16, said opening being' represented at 17, and shown as alining With the openings 14 and l5. Slidably disposed through the alining openings 14 and l5 is a stem or shank 18, one end of Patentedlillny 259, lt'.
which is. formed with en enlarged head 19, l,
disposed between the outer arm ot the member l2 the intermediate erm 13, seid head having a soclrct 20 formed' therein for the reception of the head of the bolt 91. Disn formed with an angular tapering enlargel ment 24E Afor reception in the socket oi a bit brace. y
y ln the operation of the' device, the U- shaped member is placed in strsddling relation to the meeting edges of the gear casing, as clearly seen in Fig. 2, the opening 17 being engaged With the nut, While the socket is disposedto receive the head of the bolt. The spring Will force the socket forward so as to properly hold the-bolt head, and by turning the brace the stem Will be rotated in the alining openings, thereby accomplishingthe turning of the bolt, While the arm of th'e member 10` rmly holds the nut. Thus the necessity of having a second man to hold the bolt or nut While the other is turned is completely obviated, one man beingable to remove both the bolt and nut, alone. Asthe bolt recedes from the nut, the spring is put under tension, automatically, thereby increasing the holding power thereof.
lt Will be noted that the device is of simple construction, and that it is formed of a minimum number of parts, thereby contributing to a reduction of the cost of manufacture.
What is claimed is:
A Wrench comprising a frame including av ing formed With an opening alining lWith the first opening, the arm of the other yoke member being `formed with a nut receiving and holding opening, a stem slidably ,diss
posed through the alining openings, a bi(-J stop member and the said second-named brace engaging member formed on one end arm.
1 10 of the stem, a bolt head socketed enlarge- In testimony whereof, Iafix my signa,- ment formed on the other endl of the stem, ture, n the presence of two witnesses.
a transverse stop member carried by the HOMER LE ROY BRISBIN. stem between the' common arm and the arm \Vitnesses: of the first nameolyoke member, and a coil MYRLE BRISBIN,
spring encircling the stem between said FRED W..SCHM1TZ.
