Be it known that I, Gnonen H. DAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Southbridge, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eye- Protectors, of which the following is a speclfication.

This invention relates to improvements 1n eye protectors, and has for its principal object the provision of a neat inexpensive and simply constructed eye protector, whlch shall readily'adapt itself to fit faces of varying configurations.

A further object of my invention is the simplification of the method of construction and uniting of the several parts of a device of this character.

Qther objects and advantages of my improved eye protector should be readily apparent by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will be understood that I may make any modifications in the specific details of construction shown and described within the scope of the appended claims without departing from or exceeding the spirit of my invention.

Fig. VI represents a view similar to Fig. IV of a slightly modified form of construction.

In the drawings, in which similar characters of reference are employed to denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 designates the bridge or lens frame connecting member, preferably formed of leather or other pliable material in the form of an H-shaped blank having the cross or attaching portion 2 at each end thereof adapted to fit into the groove or channel 3 formed by folding or doubling of the material of the rim 5 which has the opposite edge pressed into a V-shape or like portion 6 adapted to receive the beveled edge of a lens to retain the lens in position, as will be best understood by reference to Fig. V.

By reference to Fig. II it will be noted that in the formation of the rim or lens receiving frame a strip of material is employed having one edge folded or, doubled over, while fitting within the channel thus formed at each end is one half or section 7 of the shield member for the protector, the material of the rim being suitably pinched down upon this member 7 to retain the same in position. 1

In Fig. IV, I have shown this pinching action as accentuated by the formation of the bosses or the like 8 on the inner face of the rim strip biting into the material 7, while in Fig. VI, I have shown the edge as provided with the inwardly deflected teeth 9 which bite into or through the material 7 and thus firmly secure the same in position. Intermediately of the two shield sections 7 within the channel 3 is disposed the cross piece 2 0-11 the end of th bridge member 1, this cross piece being similarly secured by pinching of the rim or by the bosses 8 or teeth 9, as may prove most desirable. That portion of the rim remaining between the bridge ends and shield members and also the terminal portions exterior to the shield portion," is preferably also flattened as tightly as possible to provide a stiif or reinforced rim at this point, and to provide the stiff end pieces 10 through which passes the pivot 11 for the temples 12, said temples having the ear engaging portion 13, and having their sides passing rearwardly through the slots 14: of the two shield mem- I here, serving to adjustably connect said shield members as is best indicated in Fig. I.

The parts being in the relation shown in Fig. II, the rim is then shaped to round or other configuration as desired, and the bridge and shield members reversely bent, as particularly illustrated in Fig. V for example, so as to overlie the folded edge of the rim and come between said rim and the face of the wearer, and at the same time by the folding over absolutely conceal the teeth, bosses or the like which have been formed in the interior of the rim for securing the parts together.

To further increase the strength of the structure and more securely retain the shield 7 members in position under all Conditions of connection with the accompanying drawings,

the construction of my Improved eye protector should be readily apparent, and it will be seen that I have-provided an extremely simple device, in which thebridging member and shield members are securely ,united with the rim in a simple and at the same time neat and attractlve manner, m

which themanner of attachment of the said shield and bridge members serves also to provide'a reinforcing or strengthening rim and a smooth rim which will not cut or injure the face, when brought into contact therewith at the free or inner portion, and in which but a single removable fastening device serves to secure the lenses and temples in position, and in'which the permanently attachedshield member carried by the frame on account of its split formation, in nowise interferes with the opening of the rim for insertion or removal of a lens.

I claim:

1. An eye protector, including a rim having a folded edge, a bridge member having an end clamped beneath said folded edge, a shield section'oneach side of the bridge member having a portion clamped beneath said edge, and attaching ears formed from r the rim and folded portion adjacent the shield member, whereby connection of the ears brings the shield sections into overlapping operating relation, substantially as illustrated.

2. A rim for an eye protector, having the rear portions thereof reversely bent to provide a forwardly opening channel, and flex ible shield members having their edges fitting and secured within said channel and extending reversely over the inner face of the rim.

3. In an eye protector, the combination with a metallic rim having one edge formed into a lens receiving groove and the opposite edge reversely or forwardly bent to form a channel opening in the direction of the groove, of a non-metallic fitting for the pro tecto'r having an attaching portion fitting and secured within the forwardly opening channel of the rim and having the main portion of the fitting extending in a direction away from the lens receiving groove and disposed to fit between the metallic rim and the face of the wearer to prevent contact between the rim and face at the point of attachment of the fitting.

l. In an eye protector, a metallic strip hav ing a V-shaped grooved portion at one edge thereof engaging the lens bevel and having at the opposite edge a reversely bent portion 7 forming a channel opening toward the lens groove, a second portion of the mounting fitting within the channel and secured therein by crimping of the metallic sides, said material being reversely bent to form a double seam joint, and means for securing the )arts together tomaintain the double seam oint.
