INTEREST-INDICATOR.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM L. RENO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owensboro, in the county of Daviess and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Interest-Indicators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an interest indicator, and has for an object to provide a simple and easily operated device for adjusting various rows of correlated figures so that various per cents. of interest and various time lengths may be quickly ascertained without the use of interest tables or books, such as are now commonly employed.
It is another object of the invention to provide a device of this character which may be very quickly adjusted and which is positive and accurate in its indications when so adjusted, and a device which requires no calculation and has no complicated parts to be adjusted in order to indicate the desired amounts.
The above and other objects and advantages of the invention will be more fully disclosed in the following detail description of the present preferred embodiment of the invention, the same being disclosed in the accompanying drawings wherein,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the interest calculator of this invention.

Referring to these drawings, wherein like parts are designated by similar characters of reference throughout the several views, 10 designates a casing of any approved form or design and which is preferably provided with a flat top.

The journals 1 1 of the drums each project through the partition 13 and are provided on their forward ends with pinions 15 meshing with an intermediate gear 16 at the opposite sides thereof, the gear 16 being mounted on a stub shaft 17 journaled between the partition 13 and the front of the casing 10. The stub shaft 17 has fixed thereto a pinion 18 which meshes with a drive gear 19 fixed upon the inner end of the spindle 20 upon which the handle 21 is The handle 21 is preferably in the form of a disk or knob adapted to be grasped in the hand and turned in order to rotate the spindle 20 and operate the gears to drive the drums in either one direction or the other.
The spindle 20 carries thereon a dial 22 which is graduated to indicate 365 days, or a complete year, and is adapted for adjustment relative to a pointer 28 fixed to the casing 10 in a suitable location, such as at the top of the same, immediately over the dial 22.
The drums 11 and 12 have fixed thereto the opposite end of a web or tape 24, the same being shown in the present instance as being a single relatively wide web although it is understood that the same may be built up of a number of relatively narrow webs or given any other suitable form of construction than shown.
The portion of the web between the drums 11 and 12 is raised and held up against the underside of the top of the casingby a supporting strip 25 of a length equal to the width of the web, and adapted to hold the same in flat position immediately beneath a sight opening 26 in the top of the casing.
The sight opening 26 extends substantially entirely across the top of the casing and is of a width equal to the width of rows of numbers 27 arranged upon the outer face of the web 24:, so that an entire row of numbers 27 may be visible through the sight opening. However, it is desired for the purpose of operating this indicator to disclose only certain of the numbers of the row 27 through the sight opening and for this purpose a slide 28 is employed movable longi tudinally in the sight opening 26 in guide ways 29 provided therefor. The slide 28, as may be seen from Figs. 1 and 5, is provided with a series of slots 30 of a size each to disclose one of the numbers 01 the row 27. The slide 28 is provided, preferably above each opening 30, with a space for the reception of a certain basic amount from which interest may be computed by applyingthe decimal points between the various digits of the basic number, and the corresponding interest number appearing in the adjacent slide opening 30.

The. casing 10 is preferably provider at one end with means for rapidly calculating the number oft days between certain dates, and for this purpose a pair ot spaced. apart rollers are mounted. in the casing,- and are adapted to be turned by hand disks 35 arranged upon the front of the casing where access may be readily had thereto.

The casing 10 is provided "ith a sight opening 38 immediately above the supporting plate 3'? so that the columns upon the web 30 may be readily read by the operator. The web 36 is provided with columns of figures designating consecutively the number of days in the month, each column being headed by the name of the month. he columns are divided longitudinally into two parts, one part to contain the said numbers indicating the days of the month, while the second part contains consecutive numbers directly opposite the days of the month numbers, beginning with the first day of the year and roaming- (301180611- tively through the entire calendar, as partially shown in Fig. 7 of the drawing.
In operating the improved indicator, it it is desired to ascertain the number of days for which interest is to be calculated, it is only necessary to turn the rolls 341: and nurvc the calendar strip 36 past the sight opening 38, when the number of days for which the interest is desired may be rapidly calculated. For instance, if money was loaned on the 17th day of January one year, and was to be paid on the 17th of March of the following year, it would only be necessary to substract the number opposite the seventeen (.17) in the January column,
which is seventeen (l7 from the total number of days in the first year which is three hundred sixtydive leaving three hurn drcd forty-eight (3&8) days for which interto be paid. in the lirst year, and then adding thereto the number opposite the 17th day of hilarch, which seventy-six giring the number ol days in the second year, the total being tour hundred twentyl'our (ii-t) days for which interest would be i. .iferably, the slide 28 is provided with the basic numbers 1, 2, 3, l, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 0, each tollowed by a number o'l zeros, tour being shown in the present instance, and the tape is provided with groups of interests in each row thu'eof corresponding to the various basic numbers and to the various rates oi interest of each basic number. For instance, if the rate scale 32 on the top of the casing 10 indicates rates from six to ten per cent, the row 2'? would be divided into five groups, one for each per cent. indicw tion. The top number of each groups would be the interest of the cor;'esponding basic number at six per cent, the second. number of each group would be the interest of the same corresponding basic number at seven per cent, and so on throughout the entire scale 32 of the per cent. rates.
If it is desired to find the amount of interest on $7,500.00 for a certain period at six per cent, and the indicator 8'? shows the period to be 2 l0 days, the operator turns the handle 21 until the 240 d *isionpn the dial 22 registers with the pointer 23. The turning of the handle 21 rotates the drums 11 and 12 and moves the web 24- across the opening 26 in the casing. When the dial is adjusted, as above described, the column 27 which is headed with the number 2&0 is brought into registry with the sight opening 25 so that there is visible the groups of interests for the rarious per cents. for 2&0 days.
As the rate of interest given is six per cent, the operator grasps the knob 33 and mores the slide 28 until the pointer 31 thereon registers with the graduation marked 6 on the scale 32. The openings 30 in the slide 28 are now in position to disclose the various six per cent. calculations for th re spective basic amounts appearing adjacent the openings. If the amount $7,500.00 is given, the operator takes the basic number 7 on the slide 28 and points ollf four digits thereon, obtaining 7000. T he opening 30 in the slide 28 immediately beneath the seventh basic number discloses the number 280000. The basic numbers omit the two decimal places for fractions of a dollar and they may be easily remembered as all calculations must be made with respect thereto. Therefore it the basic number is pointed 0d and appearing as 7000.0 three decimal places must be counted. Of the adjacent number in the slide opening 30 three decimal places must be pointed oil and the number must be read 280.000 or two hundred and eighty dollars. There is now five hundred left of the amount given. This must be pointed OK on the lifth basic number obtaining 500.00, having four P ecimal places. The number of the column 27 appearing in the opening 30 of the slide adjacent the fifth basic number is 200000, and when four decimal places are pointed off there is obtained 20.0000 or twenty dollars.
By adding the $280.00 for the seven thousand, to the $20.00 for the five hundred, the sum total shows that $300. is the interest at six per cent. on $7500. for 240 days.
It is thus understood that the interest on any amount may be indicated on the device of this invention by simply applying the imirersally lrnoivn decimal system to the numbers appearing in the slide openings after the 1 nts have been adjusted.
It is within the spirit of this invention to change or modify the details of construction of the abov described embodiment within the scope of the following claims,-
What is claimed is- 1. In an interest indicator, a single memher having an endless surface provided with a plurality of rows of products, the prod ucts being the computed interests for each do; in the year, the interests in each row being arranged in separate corresponding groups for certain basic amounts, a slide movabl over said member and having basic numbers thereon, and openings adjacent the basic numbers, means for moving said member to bring the desired row under said slide,
and means for adjusting the slide over the member to disclose in said openings the corresponding computed interests of the groups adjacent the respective basic numbers so that the interest for any basic number and fraction thereof at the desired rate may be indicated by one adjustment of the slide.

In a device as specified, a casing having an opening in its top, a single member in the casing having an endless surface provided with a plurality of rows of computed products across th face thereof, each row being arranged in separate corresponding series according to predetermined multipliers for certain basic amounts, a slide mounted in the opening in the top of the casing and movable transversely of said member, said slide having an opening therein for each series of products and having a basic number adjacent each opening, an interest scale on the top of said casing, a pointer carried by the slide and adapted to move over said scale, means for adjusting the slide to register the pointer with the desired interest mark on the scale and to expose the desired product of each series in the respective openings in the slide, and means for adjusting said single member to bring the desired row of products beneath the slide and thereby simultaneously bring the desired series of products into cooperative relation with the basic numbers on the slide.
