To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that we, EDWIN W. WEBB and CHARLES S. WALTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new. and usefullmprovements in Car-Trucks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in car trucks and particularly to six-wheeled equalized car trucks. To the above end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure l is a side elevation of the improved car truck, with some parts diagram- ;natieally illustrated by means of broken mes;
Fig. 2 is afragmentary plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, some parts being diagrammatically illustrated by means of broken lines; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line 4-.% of Fig. 1, with some parts diagrammatically illustrated by means of broken lines.
Each side frame of the improved car truck is indicated by the numeral 1 and, as shown, is of cast steel with a general cross section in the form of a box, the walls of which are suitably reinforced. Transverse opehings are formed in the side walls of the pending side frames 1, to permit the casting thereof and for the sake of lightness.
the reinforcing flanges 3 of the outer pedestal of each pair. The purpose of these openings l will presently appear and it is important to note that the bottoms thereof are flat. On the vertical faces of the side frames 1, are horizontally spaced fiat wearing sur faces 5, having at their outer edges vertical stops 6.
The wheels and axles are indicated by the numerals 7 and 8, respectively,and the journal boxes, which are of the Master Car Builders type, are indicated by the numeral 9 and provided with the customary bolts 10 for securing the same to the side frames. The ends of the side frames 1 rest directly upon the tops of the end journal boxes 9 and are rigidly secured thereto by the'bolts 10.
Yokes 11' are rigidly secured on the tops of the intermediate journal boxes 9 by the respective bolts 10 and their prongs are bifurcated and'have form d therein horizontally alined openings 12 of the same shape as the openings l. integrally formed with the sides of the yokes 1]., are vertically extended ribbed flanges 13, which embrace the side framesl at the wearing surfaces 5 and between the vertical guides 6. Ohviously, the engagement of the flanges 13 of the yokes ll with-the wearing surfaces 5 and guides 6 holds the intermediate journal boxes 9- against endwise and lateral movements, but with freedom for vertical movement with respect to the side frames 3. Apertures 14, in the bottoms of the side. frames 1, afi'ord clearance for the heads of the bolts 10 of the intermediate journal boxes 9.
An angle bar 15 is rigidly secured to the bottom of each journal bolt 9 by the. bolts 10, which extend through the horizontal flanges thereof. Links 16v connect the end journal boxes 9 to the intermediate journal boxes 9, at their. lowerextremities, with sufficient flexibility to permit the required vertical movement of the intermediate journal boxes, with respect to the side frames 1.

turned downward. Gussetplates 20 rigi connect the horizontal flanges of the tie bars 19 to the side frames 1. The wearing surfaces of the outer pedestals 2 are reduced to receive the vertical flanges of the tie bars 19 and which vertical flanges complete the wearing surfaces of said pedestals.
Extending under each pair of pedestals 2 longitudinally of the side frames 1, is an equalizing lever 21, the intermediate portion of which extends horizontally and has integrally formed therewith a spring seat 22. The outer ends of the equalizing levers 21 are extended vertically upward between the flanges 3, having the seats or openings 4, and are fulcrumed thereto by horizontal pins 23. These pins 23 are extended through ores in the equalizing lever 21 and the seats- 4 and their outer end portions, which rest on the flattened surfaces of said seats, are
also flattened to afford stop shoulders 24,
which engage the inner faces of the respective flanges 3 and hold said pins againstendwise displacement.

21 are extended upwardly and inwardly between the bifurcated prongs of the yokes -11 and are pivoted thereto by horizontal The seats 4 and 12 are vertically elongated to permit the insertion of the pins 23 and 25 in the said seats and the removal of the same therefrom.
The bolster for the improved car truck is of the double type of cast steel and, as shown, is made up of a center beam 27,
outer beams 28, and tie beams 29 which connect the center beams 27 to the outer beams 28. The bolster is located under the horizontal flanges of the cross tie bars 19 and between the vertical flanges thereof, and the ends of its beams 28 are extended between the pairs of pedestals 2. Vertical stop flanges 30 on the extreme outer ends of the bolster beams 28 are arranged to engage the pedestals 2 and limit the lateral movement of the bolster. A lower center bearing. 31 is integrally formed with. the center beam 27. Side bearing plates 32 are riveted to the center beam 27 at. the ends thereof and prevent excessive rocking of the car.
The bolster is carried by anti-friction'lateral motion devices which, in turn, are spring supported .from the equalizing levers 21. The lateral motion devicescomprise-roller contours 33 formed in the under faces of the bolster beams 28 and whlch rest on rollers 34. These rollers 34, 111 turn, are
mounted in roller contours 35 formed in customary manner to receive the pedestals 2. Groups of coiled springs 37 are interposed between the seats 22 on the equalizing levers 21 and the spring caps 36.
Brake hangers 38 for the end wheels 7 are riveted tothe verticalflanges of the cross tie beams 19, and brake hangers 39 for the intermediate wheels 7 are riveted to the inner faces of the side frames 1.
From the above description, it is evident that the load of the car is direct on the double bolster, and the load on the bolster is distributed between the side frames 1 ;and intermediate journal boxes 7 through the lateral motion devices, springs 37 and equalizing levers 21. It is also evident that the links 16 and equalizing levers 21 permit independent movement of the end and intermediate wheels 7. The placing of the cross tie bars 19 above the bolster affords a large amount of clearance below the bolster the tops of spring caps 36 notched in the and the relation of said crossties with re spect to the bolster makes a very compact structure. The connecting of the journal boxes on each side of the truck by links 16 affords plenty of clearance for thefree action'of the equalizing levers 21.
The compactness of the above described invention is such that an extra. pair of wheels is added, without increasing the length of the truckv over a four-wheeled truck, thereby increasing the capacity of the truck with no additional weight placed on a given length of roadbed.
What we claim is A 1. In a six-wheeled 'car truck, the com bination with side frames and journal boxes, of yokes on'the intermediate journal boxes and having interlocking vertical sliding engagement with the side frames, equahzers secured to the yokes, and a bolster supported on the equalizers.
2. In a six wheeled car truck, the combination with side frames and journal boxes,
the intermediate journal boxes being mounted with freedom for vertical movement withv respect to the side frames, of equalizers fulcrumed' on the side frames and securedto the intermediate journal boxes, a bolster supported from the equalizers, and links flexibly connecting the end and intermediate journal boxes.
3. In a six wheeled car truck, the com: bination with side frames and journal boxes, the intermediate journal boxes being mounted with freedom for vertical movement. with respect to the side frames, of equalizing levers between the end and intermediate ournal boxes and having intermediate spring seats, the outer ends of the equalizing levers being fulcrumed on the side frames and the inner ends thereofbeing secured'to the intermediate journal boxes, a bolster, springs supporting the bolster from the I bination with side frames and journal boxes, I
' 'estals, spring caps guided by termediate intense spring seats on thevequalizing levers, and cross tie bars connecting the side frames above the bolster.
4. In a six wheeled car truck, the combination with side frames and journal boxes, the intermediatejournal boxes being mounted with-freedom for vertical movement with respect to the sideframes, vers between the end and intermediate journal boxes and having intermediate spring seats, the outer ends of'the equalizing levers being fulcrumed on the side frames and the inner, ends thereof being secured to the injournal boxes, a bolster, springs supporting the bolster from the spring seats 'on the equalizing levers, and links flexibly connecting the end and intermediate journal boxes. 10. In asix wheeled car truck, the combination with side frames and journal boxes, of yokes on the intermediate journal boxes and having interlocking vertical slidin engagement with the side frames, equa izers fulcrumed on the side frames and secured tov the prongs supported from the equalizers.
11. In a six wheeled car truck, the combination with side frames and journal boxes, of yokes on the intermediate journal boxes and having side flanges embracing the side frames, equalizers fulcrumed on the side frames and secured to the prongs of the yokes, and a bolster supported from the equalizers.
12. In a six wheeled nation with-side frames and journal boxes, of yokes on the intermediate journal boxes and having side flanges embracing the side frames,'vertical guides on the side frames for the side flanges of the yokes, fulcrumed on the side frames and secured to the prongs of the yokes, and a bolster supported from the equalizers. 13. In a six wheeled car truck, the combination with side frames and journal boxes,
of yokes on the intermediate journal boxes and having interlocking vertical sliding engagement with the side frames, the prongs of the yokes being bifurcated, equalizers fulcrumed on the side frames and secured to and between thepron of the yokes, and a bolster" supported rom the equalizers.
14. In a six wheeled car truck, the combi- I 'nation with side frames having depending 1st of the yokes, and a bolster 10c car truck, the combi- 11a I equalizers 115 pivotally pedestals and journal boxes, the outer pedestal' of each pair having a pair of 1at erally spaced flanges, ofequalizing levers between the end and intermediate journal boxes, the outer ends of the equalizing levers being extended between the flanges of the outer pedestals and fulcrumed thereto, yokes on the intermediate journal boxes and having interlocking vertical sliding engagement with the side frames, the prongs of the yoke being bifurcated to receive the inner ends of the equalizing levers which are pivoted thereto, and a bolster supported from the equalizing levers.
15. In a six wheeled car truck, the combination with side frames and journal boxes of the Master Car Builders type, the ends of the side frames beingsupported on the tops of the end journal boxes and rigidly secured thereto by the journal box bolts, of angle bars rigidly secured to the bottoms of the journal boxes by said bolts, links connecting the angle bars on the end and intermediate journal boxes, equalizers'fulcrumed on the side frames and secured to the intermediate -j ournal boxes, and a bolster supported from the equalizers.
16. In a six wheeled car truck, the comend and mtermediate journal boxes, equal-.
