HOUSEHOLD IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 116, IQJW.
Application filed May 8, 1915. Serial No. 26,798.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FORREST S. SowERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Household Implements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in household implements and has particular application to a cork extractor.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a cork extractor whereby corks may be extracted from bottles with comparative ease and which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efficiency and durability.
It is also my purpose to provide a household implement which will embody in its construction, among other features, a handle and a cork screw carried by the handle and movable relatively thereto and adapted to penetrate a cork, means being carried by the handle to engage the mouth of the bottle and forming a fulcrum for the handle so that the handle may be swung to withdraw the cork from the bottle. I
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combination household implement constructed in accordance with the present invention, the various tools being shown in open position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device showing the tools in closed position. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the device. Fig. 4 is an end View thereof. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a detail of the invention.
eferring now to the drawing in detail, 1 designates the handle of the implement, such handle being formed of a single strip of metal bent upon itself centrally of its ends as at 2 and having'the limbs thereof secured to each other by means of a rivet 3 or other fastening device adjacent to the free ends thereof, and the outer extremities thereof bent at right angles to the limbs and extended outwardly in opposite directions as at 4. Suitably fastened to the inner surface of one of the limbs of the handle adjacent to the outwardly projecting ends 4 and depending from such limb is an arm 5 carrying at one end, a can cutting blade 6 having the cutting edge arranged at right angles to the arm, while formed in the adjacent edge of the outturned end 4 of the limb carrying the arm 5 is a notch 7. This notch 7 is designed to receive the marginal edge of the can being opened when the knife or blade 6 is driven through the top of such can and the notch 7 rides around on the edge of the can in the operation of the knife or blade 6 so as to guide the implement and insure the pro-per cutting of the top of the can. Formed integral with the inner end of the arm 5 and projecting in a direction opposite from the arm 5 is a second arm 8 having the outer end thereof formed with a laterally projecting lug 9. This lug 9 is adapted to engage the lower edge of a metal bottle cap and when so engaged the adjacent edges of the limbs of the handle 1 rest upon the top of the cap and form a fulcrum for the handle about which the implement may be swung and in the swinging of the handle the arm 8 and lug 9 are drawn upwardly, thereby removing the metal cap from the bottle.
10 designates a corkscrew havin one end formed integral with a flat shanc l1 disposed between the limbs of the handle at the connected portions thereof and formed with an elongated slot 12 that receives the rivet 3. Formed in the shank 11 and communicating with the slot 12 are semicircular recesses 13 spaced apart longitudinally of the shank. Pivotally connected to the other limb of the handle 1 adjacent to the connected ends of such limbs is an arm 14: having the end thereof remote from the pivot formed with a notch 15. The corkscrew and the arm 14: lie within the limbs of the handle 1 as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing and when it is desired to use the corkscrew, the latter is swung into a position in alinement with the handle, and the corkscrew screwed into the cork. The handle is then swung at right angles to the shank of the corkscrew and the arm 14 swung to a position parallel with the corkscrew as shown in Fig. 1. The notch 15 in the end of the arm 14 is engaged with the edge of themouth of the bottleand when the notched end of the arm is engaged with the bottle, the handle may be moved bodily relatively to the shank, owing to the rivet 3 being disposed within the slot 12 in the shank 11. When the notched end of the arm is engaged with the bottle the rivet is swung into the adjacent recess 13, thereby forming such a connection between the handle and the shank of the corkscrew that the corkscrew may be drawn upwardly when the handle is swung'about the arm 14 as a fulcrum. in the upward movement of the corkscrew the cork is withdrawn from-the bottle.
Pivotally connected to the inner surface of one of the limbs adjacent to the bent portion 2 of the handle is an arm 16 having the outer end thereof formed with a prong 17 adapted to penetrate the cap of a milk bottle so that such cap may be readily and conveniently removed.
lVhile I have herein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, 1 wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
A tool of the character described comprising an elongated strip of material bent to provide a handle including spaced convergently disposed limbs, a rivet passed trans versely through said limbs adjacent their extremities, a stopper extracting element embodying an elongated rectangular portion, and a reduced spiral portion pro ecting centrally from one end of said rectangular portion, the latter mentioned portion being longitudinally slotted to receive said rivet, one wall of said slot having spaced notches to interchangeably engage said rivet for adjusting the extracting element relative to the handle, a substantially fiat arm arranged between the limbs of the handle, and pi'voted'to one of said limbs to normally lie parallel therewith, and to depend therefrom in parallelism with the extracting element for use with the latter, and said arm having a notch in its lower edge to engage the mouth of the bottle for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FORREST S. SOWERS.
