COLON-IRRIGATOR.
Application filed March 25, 1916. Serial No. 86,637.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR R. FISHER, a c1t1ze'n of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Colon-Irrigators, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to colon irrigators, and has for one of its objects the provision of an irrigator of the kind whereby a rectal anesthesia may be performed in a sanative manner.

T beingtoprovide an instrument for the administration of anesthetics by the rectum to the colon, or large intestine, continuous from the ileum to the rectum; and to this end the irrigator consists of a flexible cylindrical body piece and a flexible applicator .tube,longitudinally movable therethrough. Another object of the invention is to produce an irrigator of the character mentioned wherein provision is made to permit the return flow of the wasted anesthetic.
Other means is provided .to prevent an accumulation between the applicator tube and the walls ofthe cylindrical body, for the maintenance of a clear drain passage for the return flow of the wasted anesthetic.
With these objects in view, and others which will appear as the natureof my invention is better understood when the following description is read in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawing, in

Referring now to the drawing in detail,
the numeral 1, designates a cylindrical body which is made, preferably, of some resilient material with aproper quality of stiffness and yet having'a fine elastic quality. The mentioned cylindrical body is provided with a bore 2, and a threaded liner 3, adapted for threading engagement with the reduced thread end portion of an inflexible guard piece 4. The mentioned guard piece 4, has a bore 5, which alines with the bore 2, of the cylindrical body 1,

The cylindrical body 1', at the end opposite to that end having the guard piece 4, is
provided withdiametrically opposite pas-- sages 1 and diametrically opposite tube engaging portions l and at the same end the said cylindrical body is apertured at diametrically opposite points as, at 8. The guard-piece 4, is provided'with a nipple 9, and a discharge duct 10, which communicates with the nipple 9, and bore'2. Connected to the nipple9, is a rubber tube 11,-

The flexible applicator the extremeend thereof, and other openings 14, are provided in the sidewall ofsaid tube v The said tube 7, maybe of any suitable length and is in practice-connected-with a vessel which contains the anesthetic, as ether, or any other medical'solution that may be desired for the adlm'nistration.
In practice the vcylindrical body 1, is properly applied, the guard piece 4, serving as a closure against the return flow of the wasted anesthetic, which therefore, on its return passes through the apertures 8, into the bore 2, thenceinto the discharge duct 10, into the tube 11,'with which it may be directed into a vessel for that purpose. In the performance of the anesthesia, the anesthetic is made to flow through the flexible applicator tube 7, and any or all the alfected .parts of the mucous membrane of the colon may be administered to, by reason of the longitudinal movement which may be imparted to the tube 7, relatively -to the body 1, such feature is particularly advantageous, if a sanative administration is to be performed, moreover, and owing to the diflerence of the tensile qualities of the cylindrical bodyv 1, and the applicator tube 7, that is to'say, the fact that the cylindrical body 1, is less pliant than the applicator tube 7, the irrigator may be more readily applied for use, without causing any undue pain, as provision is necessarily made for the slightand gradual flexing of the parts". 21A colon irrigator, comprising a flexible cylindrical body having a bore therein; an inflexible guard piece connected to the cylindrical body at one end, and having a discharge duct which communicates with said bore; apertures in the side walls of the cylindrical body at the other end thereof, the said bore, discharge duct and apertures constituting' a drain passage, and a flexible'applicator tube, longitudinally movable through the inflexible guard piece and the flexible cylindrical body, as and for the purpose specified.
