CURTAIN-ROD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 191'?.
Application filed September 19, 1914. Serial No. 862,498.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CriARLEs W. Kursen, citizen of the United States, residing at Sturgis, in the county of St. Joseph 1and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain- Rods; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact' description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in curtain rods and has for its object to provide a curtain rod and brackets therefor which are separable for purposes of mounting and removing the curtain or curtains supported thereby, and, 'more particularly, to provide simple and eiicient means for effecting the separation and .connection between the curtain rod and brackets.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating a curtain rod embodying my invention: Figure -1- is a fragmentary detail perspective view showing a double curtain rod and its brackets, embodying my invention, secured to a window casing. Fig. -2- is a top plan view on an enlarged Scale, partly in section, of curtain rods and brackets embodying my invention, the same 'being partly broken away. Fig. -3 is a fragmentary detail view in elevation of the end portions of a bracket and curtain rod respectively, and a sleeve for engaging the same with each other. Figs. 4 and -5- are fragmentary detail horizontal sections of the end portions of a bracket and curtain rod showing the sleeve for engaging them with each other in its two respectively different positions.
My invention resides more particularly in the particular sleeve employed for engaging a ,curtain rod with a bracket, and the coacting means provided on the sleeve and bracket for permitting to said sleeve limited longitudinal movement relatively to the bracket whereby it may be disposed to pro]ect a limited distance outwardly from an end of the bracket and over the contiguous end of the curtain rod to support the latter, and whereby it may be moved so that the outer end portion of said sleeve is disposed flush or substantially flush with the end of the bracket whereupon the curtain rod may be readily removed.
The particular object of the invention, so
far as it relates to the aforesaid sleeve and its connection with the bracket, consists in the provision of simple and eHective means whereby the sleeve may be readily moved on the bracket with which it is engaged to a limited extent for the purpose of engaging and disengaging the curtain rod and whereby the removal of said sleeve from the bracket and the loss or distortion thereof due to such removal is rendered difficult.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown a pair of double-armed curtain rod brackets secured to a window casing 1, each of said brackets comprising a plate 2 having two L- shaped arms 3 and 4 projecting therefrom, the respective legs of said arms being of different length and disposed respectively parallel with each other, the outer ends thereof being disposed flush withv each other. Each of said arms is suitably rigidly secured at one end to the base plate 2.
The respective plates 2 are disposed so that the outer ends of-the arms thereof oppose each other respectively and between the same the curtain rods 5 and 6 are disposed, each of said rods being substantially equal in length to the distance between the opposed ends of the respective arms of said brackets. The said arms are preferably made of cylindrical rods and each of these is provided contiguous to the outer end of its outer leg with two parallel circumferential grooves 7, each of which has one wall disposed perpendicularly to the axis of the rod and the other wall of which is inclined, the said perpendicular walls of the grooves of each of said arms opposing each other and the inclined walls being disposed to oppose the respective perpendicular walls. Mounted on the outer leg of each of said arms of each bracket is a sleeve provided with two tongues 9 and 10 respectively, each of which extends from a point contiguous to one end of the tube to a point substantially midway between the ends thereof, said tongues being bordered by parallel longltudinal slotsyll in said sleeve.
8 which is ,or other suitable material, so that said tongues are elastic and will spring back to their normal positions when forced out ofthe same. The said projections 12 of said tongues are adapted to engage in the annular or circumferential grooves 7 and as the tube or sleeve 8 is moved inwardly upon the outer leg of the arm of the bracket the said projection 12 of the tongue 9 will engage the perpendicular wall of the innermost groove 7 thus coacting with the latter to prevent further movement of said sleeve in that direction.' When the said sleeve has reached this position the outer end thereof will be substantially flush with the end of the outer leg of the arm of the bracket, as shown in Fig. 5, thus enabling the contiguous end portion of the curtain rod 5 to be moved laterally relatively to said bracket for the purpose of removing or replacing such rod. The rod being in the position shown in Fig. -5-, the said'sleeve 8 is moved outwardly until the projection 12 of the tongue 10 engages the perpendicular wall of the outer groove 7, which constitutes a stop to prevent further outward movement of said sleeve, as shown in Fig. -4-, the sleeve now projecting partly over and engaging the end portion of the curtain rod 5 to support the same.
By means of my invention the operation of removing and replacing curtain rods isv rendered very easy, and at the same time the loss of sleeves and the distortion of the same by falling upon the floor and being stepped upon, is obviated.
I claim as my invention:
l. A curtain fixture comprising in combination, a pair of brackets each equipped with a projection, said projections constituting the opposed end-portions of a curtain rod, a middle-portion adapted to fill the open space between the opposed ends of said end-portions, and telescopic coupling members for holding said middle and endportions in axial ahnement, said coupling members telescopically movable with respect to said curtain rod members for receiving the opposed end-portions of said parts, and inter-engaging formations on the carrier for each of said coupling members and the latter for yieldingly holding said coupling member against longitudinal movement in either direction when disposed in coupling position relatively to the several rod-parts, one of said parts presenting opposed shoulders to the other thereof.
2. A curtain rod and bracket in combisleeve 3. The combination with a curtain rod and a bracket therefor, of a sleeve longitudinally movable relatively to both said parts and adapted to project partly over both to engage them with and hold them peripherally substantially iiush with each other, and interengaging means on said sleeve and one of said parts coacting to limit the relative longitudinal movement thereof, said means comprising a pair of opposed shoulders on one of said parts, and opposed spring tongues on the sleeve having their free end portions normally projecting into engaging relation to said shoulders, the latter constituting stops to limit the movement of said sleeve.
4. The combination with a curtain rod and a bracket therefor, of a, sleeve longitudinally movable relatively to both said parts and adapted to project partly over both to engage them with and hold them peripherally substantially iush with each other, and interengaging means on said sleeve and one of said parts coacting to limit the relative longitudinal movement thereof, said means comprising a pair of annular grooves in one of said parts each having a wall disposed substantially perpendicular to the axis of said part, said perpendicular walls opposed to each other, the other walls of said grooves tapered, and elastic means on the sleeve normally projecting into engaging relation to said grooves and adapted to be engaged by the perpendicular walls of the latter to limit the longitudinal movements of said sleeve on said part.
5. The combination with a curtain rod and a bracket therefor, of a sleeve longitudinally movable relatively to both said parts and adapted to project partly over both to engage them with and hold them peripherally substantially flush with each other, and interengaging means on said and one of said parts coacting to limit the relative longitudinal movement thereof, said means comprising a pair of annular grooves in oneof said parts each having a wall disposed substantially perpendicular to the axis of said part, said-perpendicular Walls opposed to each other, the other walls of said grooves tapered, and a pair of opposed spring tongues extending longitudinally of the sleeve between the ends of the latter and having inwardly cxten end portions projecting into enname in presence of two subscribing witgaging relation to said grooves, each of said nesses. tongues' coacting with an opposed perpendicular wall of the part cairrylng said sleeve 5 to limit the longitudinal movement of the Witnesses: l
latter thereon in one direction. J. PAUL WAIT,
1n testimony whereof E have signed my JAMES NM.
