Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 5, 1915. Serial No. 54,207.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, TVALTER H. SWAN son, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to Wagons, and has for its primary object to provide a simple and eflicient adjustable wheel mounted frame for supporting the body, whereby the latter may be lowered to facilitate loading thereof.
Another object is the provislon of an adjustable wagon frame and conveniently operable means for adjusting the frame.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 represents a top plan view of the improved wagon partly broken away, Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 represents a transverse sectional vlew on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numerals 5 and 6 indicate the front and rear sections, respectively, of the supporting frame of the wagon. The forward extremity of the section 5 is pivotally supported upon the front axle 7 provided with the usual wheels 8, and the rear section 6 is provided with laterally projecting sleeves 9 upon which are rotatably mounted the rear wheels 10. The front frame section includes a. pair of spaced parallel longitudinal members 5 connected at and adjacent their forward and rear extremities by transverse members 12 and 13, respectively. The forward angular extremities of the longitudinal members of the rear section are connected by a transverse member 14 and the body 15 of the vehicle is supported upon the members 13 and 14. At approximately the longitudinal center of the vehicle the longitudinal members 5 and 6 of the front and rear frames are pivotally connected by stub shafts 16 rigidly secured to the longitudinal members 5 and projecting through bearings carried by the longitudinal members 6. The longitudinal members 5 and 6 of the frames operate in the manner of a pair of crossed levers, and as one end of each 1ongitudinal member is supported upon the wheels of the vehicle, it is evident that when the members are moved together the body 15 is elevated.
A plurality of wear plates 18 are secured to the outer surfaces of the wagon body 15 and are slidably engaged with arms 19 carried by the longitudinal members 5. The arms 19 are designed to guide the vertical movement of the body 15 and also to prevent spreading of the side walls thereof.
A winding shaft 20 is journaled in bearings 21 secured to the longitudinal members forwardly of the body 15 and is provided at one end with a relatively large gear wheel 22, which is connected with a relatively small gear'wheel 23, carried by a shaft 24. A hand crank 25 is detachably secured to the shaft 24 for manually rotating the latter.
A pair of forwardly directed arms 26 are rigidly secured to the front transverse member 14 of the rear section and project a distance forwardly of the body 5, A pair of lifting chains 27 are permanently fastened at one end to the winding shaft 20 and are secured at their opposite extremities to the forwardly directed arms 26, whereby when the shaft is rotated so as to wind the chains 27 thereon the lower extremities of the longitudinal members 5 and 6 are elevated, together with the wagon body 15. A pawl and ratchet mechanism 28 is connected with the crank shaft 24 to lock the latter against rotational movement in one direction.
The rear axle 29 is rotatably supported in the tubular bearing members or sleeves 9 carried by the longitudinal members 6 and is removably secured in position by a plurality of cotter pins or equivalent means 30. When it is desired to load or unload the Wagon from the rear end, the cotter pins 30 and one end of the shaft 29 are removed and the axle is withdrawn from the sleeve 9. The rear extremities of the sides of the body 15 are formed with arcuate slots 31 receiving the axle 29 so as to permit vertical movement of the body 15 during adjustment thereof.
What I claim is:
1. A wagon including front and rear axles, vertically movable crossed frame sections supported at their opposite ends upon said axles, means connecting the sections of the frame, and a body supported upon said sections and movable therewith.
2. A wagon including a supporting frame composed of crossed and pivotally connected sections, axles supporting the opposite ends of the frame, a body supported upon said frame, and means for elevating said body. I
3. A wagon including a frame composed of a pair of crossed and pivoted sections, axles supporting the outer ends of the sections, and a body supported upon the inner ends of said sections. 7
4-. A wagon including forward and rear crossed supporting frame sections, means pivotally connecting said sections together, axles supporting the outer extremities of said frame sections, a body supported upon the inner ends of said sections, and means for elevating the body. i
