SAFETY COLLAR-BUTTON.
incassa.
Application filed May 12, 1914.
To all 'whom t may conce/W1,
Be it known that I, MAX Genion, a sub- `iect of the Czar of Russia, and a resident of New York, county and State of N ew York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Safety Collar-Buttons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to a class of devices adapted to be used for fastening together parts of a garment.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a device, or safety collar but-ton designed to be used especially in conjunction with a shirt, or waist, or other like garment for detachably fastening together the ends of the neck band, or sleeve bands thereof as well as permitting collars and cuii's to be removably attached thereto, and wherein is employed a post, or shank, on one end of which is a head, or button, and on the other end thereof is a back plate providing a laterally extending annular flange. To the post is hingedly connected a clamp,
' or holding elementJ adapted to be moved'to a straddle position relatively to the post and head of the button, and the clamping element, as well as the head of the button are guided through a buttonhole of the garment when the device is applied thereto. The plate, or iiange of the button will lie against one surface ofthe garment, and by then swinging the clamping element so as to engage the opposite surface of the garment the button will be held against being lost.
Another object of the invention is to provide means serving to prevent the holding element from accidental movement when clamped upon the garment; and a further object of the invention is to provide a safety collar button of simple and etlicient construction, and which is susceptible of being made in any desired size and shape.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the said invention being more fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim at the end of the description.
ln the drawing, Figure l is a fragmentary view of the upper part of a garment showing one form of my improved collar button applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the button. Fig. 3 is a perspective Specification of Letters Patent.

view of the post and head. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the clamping element-used in connection with the post and Fig. 5 is a form of blank from which the post and head are formed.
ihe figures of the drawing disclose the preferred form of the "collar button. This type of button has a rigid post 22 and an integral head 23 which are preferably made by being stamped from a single sheet of spring metal in the shape illustrated in Fig. e. star-shaped plate, as 24, is thereby provided, and projecting on alinement in opposite lateral directions from the starplate are two strips, or spring members, as 25 and 26. The free ends of the strips 25 and 26 are reduced to provide two narrow fingers, or lugs 27 and 28. The strips 25 and 26 adjacent to the fingers 27 and 28 are transversely recessed, at 29 and 30, so that a substantially rectangular passage will be provided when the strips of the post are in abutting arrangement. By the use of suit-- able forming dies the star-plate 24 is shaped to provide the round head 23 and the strips 25 and 26 as well as the lugs 27 and 28 will be directed in lapping arrangement to provide the post 22 and to register the recesses 29 and 30 to forni the passage through the post. The strips, or spring members of the post 22 may then be yieldingly sprung apart. A back-plate 31 which may be of any suitable shape, is fastened to the opposite end of the post 22 opposite to the head 23 by passing the lugs 27 and 28 through an opening midway of this plate, and by bending the free ends of the lugs in opposite lateral directions upon the underside of the plate it will be tightly held to the post. This form of the collar button has a clamp, or holding element, as 32 Fig. 4. rIhe clamping element 32 ylike the clamp 2l is also substantially U-shaped to provide two spaced arms 33 and 34, and extending toward each other from the inner edge of the free ends of these arms are two lugs 35 and 36. rlhe arms 33 and 34 are spaced apart a suiiicient distance to allow the clamping element to be freely swung over the post 22 and over the head 23, and each of the lugs 35 and 86 is approximately rectangular in shape as well as being of a size slightly smaller than the rectangular transverse passage through the post 22. When the clamping element 32 is applied to the post 22 the lugs 35 and 36 are inserted in the ends of the passage of the post, and the clamping element may be swung to a straddle position over the head 28, or swung reversely toward the back-plate 31. This form of the collar button is used in conjunction with a shirt, waist, or other garment in the usual manner. By providing the rectangular passage through the post 22 and providing the rectangular lugs 35 and 36 the clamping element 32 when moved so as tostraddle the head 23 will be yieldingly held in this position by the tension of the spring members 25 and 26 of the post, and when the clamping element is reversely swung so as to extend laterally from the post above the plate 3l these spring inembers will likewise hold the clamp yieldingly against movement.
In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changesas fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim'as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent t- A collar button, comprising in combination, a base, a post and head, said post and head being formed from a blank consisting of a central portion designed to form a head, strips extending from opposite sides oi' said central portion and folded together to provide a post, and means for securing said post to the base, said strips being shaped to provide a rectangular recess therebetween, and a yokelike clamp having lugs extending inwardly into the ends of said recess and being spring held by said strips to cause the clamp to lie in posit-ion over said head or in substantially horizontal position.
This specication signed and witnessed this eleventh day of May, A. D. 1914;.
