WHEELBARROW-SAW.
Application filed April as, 1915.
in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a wheelbarrow saw.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of portable saws and to provide a simple, practical, and mexpensive wheelbarrow saw of strong and durable construction adapted to be readily moved from one point or place to another and capable of cutting down trees close to the ground, say, within four inches of the surface of the ground and adapted to be operated by a small engine or any other suitable power.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form,
proportion and minor details of construe-- tion may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wheelbarrow saw constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is a plan view, Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the wheelbarrow saw.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. y
In the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated a practical embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a main or supporting frame of a wheelbarrow provided'at the front end with a supporting wheel 2 and having legs or stilts 3 located at opposite sides of the rear portion to coact with the 4 wheel for supporting the frame in a horizontal position. The Wheelbarrow frame is equipped at the back with suitable handles 4: to enable the device to be handled like an ordinary wheelbarrow in transferring it Specification of Letters Patent.

from one point or place to another, but the frame may be mounted on wheels arranged in any other desired manner to render it" portable.
The machine is equipped at the front with a cross cut saw pivoted at its inner end 6 to oscillatory lever 7 and normally urged against the work by a coiled spring 8. The springis secured at one end to the saw adacent to the pivoted end 6 thereof and its other end is connected with an arm or portion 9 projecting from the lever beyond the pivot of the saw 5. By this construction the saw will automatically feed its way into .a tree or other material to be out as it is reciprocated by the oscillatory lever 7.
The lever 7 which is pivoted intermediate of its ends to a projecting arm 10 of the main frame by a bolt or pin 11 is provided at its inner actuated end with a toothed segmental head 12 which meshes with a rack 13 carried by a reciprocatory bar ormem- I ber 14. The reciprocatory bar or member which extends longitudinally of the frame of the machine passes through a guide opening 15 of a bar or member 16 and it proje'cts at the front of the frame and is provided at one side of its front portion with the said rack 13. The inner end of the longitudinally disposed reciprocatory bar 14 is connected with a cross head 17 v slidable in a shown, and the pulley 23 is adapted to receive a belt for connecting it with the engine or any other actuating means and gearing may also be employed for communicating rotary movement to the crank shaft or drive shaft 22. When the crank shaft or drive shaft 22 is rotated the pitman 19 will be actuated and will reciprocate the longitudinal bar or member 1 1, which through its rack 13 will oscillate the lever 7 and positively reciprocate the saw which is yieldably maintained in engagement with and urged against the work.
A saW of any desired character may of course be employed and it mav be arranged to operate either in a vertical or horizontal plane and when sawing other material than trees or fixed timbers, any suitable clamping means may be employed for holding the work in proper position to be operated on by the saw.
The lever 7 is mounted in an opening 24: of an arm 25 extending longitudinally from one end of the main frame and supported by an angularly disposed brace 26 but any other suitable means may of course be employed for mounting the oscillatory saw carrying lever.
That is claimed is The combination with a portable frame, of a member carried by said frame and proj eating forwardly therefrom, a vertically disposed lever pivoted upon said member to swing in a vertical plane, a horizontally disposed extension carried by the lower end of said lever, a saw having one of its ends pivoted upon said extension, said saw lying and operating in a horizontal plane, spring means engaged with said saw and with the extension and acting to impel the saw laterally and toward the work and means carried by the frame for actuating saidlever.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
