GEORGE W. URMSGN, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
ADJUSTABLE JAMB FOR FOLDING PARTITIONS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1916.
Original application filed November 24, 1915, Serial No. 63,194. Divided and this application filed March 1,
. 1816. Serial No. 81,346.
b all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE N. UnMsoN, a subject of the King of England, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Jambs for Folding Partitions, of which the following is full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to adjustable jambs especially designed for folding partitions in order to allow for swelling and Shrinkage of the wooden sections of the partition and always insure the proper closing or extension of said partition. \Vithout adjustable j ambs, the swelling of the sections will prevent them from being fully extended into line, at least one pair of the hinged sections being left buckled or projecting laterally from the line, while if allowance is made for swelling, the sections will not completely fill the opening when the wood shrinks. To overcome this condition, I provide adjustable jambs of improved construc- 1 tion which may be retracted when the wooden sections of the partition are swollen, and which may be extended when the sections shrink, so that a precise fit of the partition between the jambs may always be had.
Another object is to provide improved means for detachably securing the partition to the adjustable jamb whereby said partition can only be separated from the jamb when open.
A further object is to prevent the hinge jamb from beingadjusted when the partition is connected thereto.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute a part of.
this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a broken eleva tion of the partition in closed position. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the partition and jambs taken on the line IIII of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of the upper end portion of the hinged edge of the partition, showing the opening for the introduction of an instrument for withdrawing or retracting the spring pressed hinge pin. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through the hinge jamb, showing the portion in open position, and-Fig. 5 is a detailed view of one of the filling plates. 7 2
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the adjustable hinge jamb, 7
that is, the jamb to which the adjacent section a of the partition ishinged, and 2 is the opposite jamb against which the outer end section 5 of the partition is adapted to fit when the partition is closed.
The adjustable hinge j amb 1 is detachably connected to the permanent jamb strip 12 by means of a screw 13, Figs. 2 and 4, of
which there may be any desired number suitably spaced apart from the bottom to the top of the jamb as indicated in Fig. 1.
The jamb 1 is arranged between molding strips 1 1 which are secured to plates 15 by screws 16, while said plates are fastened to' the jamb strip 12 by screws 17-. It will be understood that as many of the plates 15 as are necessary or desirable may be used, preferably the same number as there are'screws 13 being employed, one of said screws passing through the central; portion of each plate. The plates 15 have outwardly projecting pins '18 which engage correspond- T ingly shaped sockets 19 in the inner face of the amb 1.. These pins 18 serve to support a variable number of filling plates 20, each of which has a central opening 22 for the passage of the screw 13, and other passages 21 to fit over said pins 18, see Fig. 5. By
varying the number of the filling plates 20 placed between the plates 15 and the jamb 1, said jamb may be retracted or projected to a. sufiicient extent to counteract any swelling or shrinkage of the partition, so as to always insure the complete closing and proper fit ofthe partition when closedas shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The jamb 2 may be adjusted in a similar manner with respect to the permanent jamb strip by means of screws and a variable number of the filling plates 20.
The outer face ofthe jamb 1 is concave, as at 23 to provide a closefit with the rounded or convex inner edge 24 of the partition section 4 which is detachably hinged to the jamb 1 so that it may be taken 013? to permit access to the screws 13 when it is desired to change the number of filling plates 20 between the jamb 1 and the plate 15.
As illustrated best in Figs. 1 and 3, the detachable hinge connection between the sections at of the partition and the adjustable amb 1 comprises straps or plates 25 secured to the upper and lower end portions of said jamb, and spring pressed hinge pins 26 carried by the upper and lower ends of the section 4,- of the partition. Springs 27 normally hold the pins 26 projected so as to engage suitable openings in the straps 25. The pins 26 have lateral projections 28 arranged in passages 29 opening on the inner rounded edge 2% of the section 4 of the partition. When the'partition is open, as illustrated in Fig. 4, the pins 26 may be withdrawn from engagement with the straps 25 by inserting a suitable instrument, such as a nail, into the passages 29 and thereby forcing the projections 28 toward the springs 27.
The outer edge of the free end section 5 of the partition is preferably provided with a groove 53 to fit over a tongue 54 on the j amb 2 for preventing sight being had through the juncture of these parts. It will be understood that the folding partition may consist of any desired number of sections between the hinged section 4: and the outer section 5, and that disregarding the adjustable jamb 2, the remainder of the structure herein described may be used on an ordinary hinged door as well as a folding partition.
This application is a division of my former pending application for folding partition filed November 2st, 1915, Ser. No. 68,19
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination with a permanent jamb strip, of an adjustable jamb, filling.
plates interposed between the jamb and jamb strip, projections on the jamb strip to support a variable number of said filling plates, and means for detachably securing the jamb to the jamb strip and clamping the filling plates between them, whereby said jamb is rigidly held in adjusted position against movement toward or away from said jamb strip.
2. The combination with a permanent jamb strip, of plates secured to said strip and having outward projections, an adjustable j amb of less width than said plates disposed across the same intermediate of their lateral edges, filling plates interposed between the jamb and the plates secured to the jamb strip and supported on said projections, means for detachably securing the j amb to said jamb strip, and molding strips secured to and covering the lateral edge portions of the first mentioned plates which project at either side of the jamb for housing the filling plates.
3. The combination with an adjustable jamb of detachable securing means for the jamb and a door hingedto the jamb, the hinged edge of the door preventing access to said securing means when the door is mounted on its hinges and in either open or closed position.
4. The combination with an adjustable jamb having a concave outer face, of removable means for securing said jamb in adjusted position, said securing means being accessible for adjustment only in the concavity of the outer face of the jamb, and a door hinged to the jamb and having its inner edge convex to fit the concavity in the jamb, and prevent access to said jamb adjusting means when mounted on its hinges and in either open or closed position.
5. The combination. with an adjustable jamb having a concave outer face, of removable means for securing said jamb in adjusted position, said securing means'being accessible for adjustment only in the concavity of the outer face of the jamb, horizontal straps projecting beyond the concave face at the upper and lower ends of the jamb, a door detachably hinged to said straps and having a convex inner edgelto fit the concavity in the jamb, and prevent access to said jamb adjusting means when mounted on its hinges and in either open or closed position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification. V
GEORGE W. URMSON.
