MEANS FOR SECURING CHAIN-LIN KS TOGETHER.
weaves.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Uct. 31. 1916.
Application filed October 7, 1915. Serial No. 54,592.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ANDREW M. BANDUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockville, in the county of Sherman and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Securing Chain-Links Together; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to means for securing chain links together and is more particularly adapted for coupling worn links at their point of connection, it being heretofore the practice upon a link or links becoming worn to discard same for a new link section, and it is the object of my invention to overcome this waste and its consequent expense, by providing an inexpensive device which may easily be attached to the chain and which is simple of construction and economical to manufacture.
The invention also contemplates a device of the character described which will strengthen a link at its point of union with the adjoining link.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combina tion of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of the application, Figure 1 is a plan view of a pair of chain links showing my improved device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the reverse side of same. Fig. 3 is an edge elevational view, showing the chain connecting means. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the securing device as when stamped or constructed from a sheet of metal.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.
The securing device comprises a rectangular body portion 1, formed at each side and above the center thereof, with arms 2, which latter project laterally from the said body portion and have integral extensions 3, extending parallel with the side edges of the body portion. The securing device is preferably struck out of pliable sheet metal, that is a metal of known ductility such as sheet steel and copper and formed in one stamping operation.
The chain links of general construction are formed at one end with a hook 'member 4:, which engages the rear bar 5 of the next succeeding link, and in applying my securing device to the worn links, the body portion 1, is bent around the hook member 4, of one link and the rear bar 5 of the succeeding link with which it is associated. The body portion of the securing device almost completely covers the hook portion of one link and the arms 2 extend in alinement with the rear bar 5, of the next link. The extensions 3 of the arms 2, are bent over the rear bar 5, of the link and serve to further retain the securing device upon the link members.
It is obvious that the metal forming the securing device will be of sufficient thickness and strength to insure the firm holding of the link elements, so that the same will not pull apart when in engagement with the gear teeth.
By employing this device, quick repairs may be made and where the hook portions of the links are worn, the securing device can be bent around the affected parts and secured permanently thereon.
While I have illustrated the preferred form of my device, it is to be known that changes and variations may be resorted to, which may come within the scope of the claims hereto appended.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors-Patent, is
1. A securing means for chain links, comprising the combination with the links of a chain, each link having a bar at one end and a hook member at the opposite end adapted to engage the bar of the next succeeding link, of a securing device, comprising a body portion adapted to be bent around the connected hook and cross-bar of adjoining links, integral arms extending laterally of the body and extensions carried by the arms adapted to project between the adjoining links.
2. A securing device for chain links, comprising the combination with cooperating links having cross-bars at their ends, one cross-bar of one link having a hook adapted to engage the cross-bar of the next succeeding link, of a securing device comprising a body portion adapted to encompass said end cross-bars and the hook cooperating therewith andiiieans carried by the body portion adapted to extend between said cross-bars,
whereby the links will be securely held in 10 sions on the arms, said body portion and extensions being adapted to engage with one of the meeting ends of adjacent link members.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
