HENRY J. DECKER, 0F NOBLESVILLE, INDIANA; GOLDIA M. DECKER ADMINISTRATRIX 0E SAID HENRY J. DECKER, DECEASED.
EXPANDEB AND COMPRESSOR WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1916.
Application filed March 11, 1916. Serial No. 83,628.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. DECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Noblesville, in the county of Hamilton and State of Indiana, have invented an Expander and Compressor Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention relates to improvements in an expander and compressor wrench to be used as a jack-screw, to expedite the removal of pins, split collars, and keys interlocked with retainer plate which holds valve spring in position as attached to valve stem in automobile and similar motors, in the following manner; by inserting prongs of instrument between the tappet bush and plate, encompassing the tappet and valve stem in front and on sides. By turning stem to right forces expander plate forward-between angles of forks, thereby expanding same more rapidly on account of double left-hand screws, lifting retainer plate, compressing spring, exposing pins, split collars, or keys for removal, which releases valve for regrinding, etc.
The wrench may be used as a clamp by turning stem to left which closes forks.
Wider expansion can be quickly obtained by reversing nut and expander plate, after which expander plate is drawn into back angles of forks by turning stem to left.
I obtain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a drawing showing the wrench complete. Fig. 2 is a stop view of each expander and compressor fork, double angles of which are shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view of nut with expander plate attached. Fig. 4 is a projection view of fork retainer block, Fig. 5 is a top view of the wheel used in operating the wrench.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for 1 is the stem, 2 is a double left-hand screw on the end of the stem, which receives the which the stem end passes, 11 being the two assembled as a retainer block for holding forks. The retainer block is held in position by collar 12 on one side and sleeve 13 on the other.
14 is a square shank to receive wheel 15, held in position by a hexagon cap nut 16, the end of the stem being threaded for the reception of the hexagon cap nut.
I am aware that prior to my invention expander and compressor wrenches have been made, for the purpose of tightening and loosening nuts, but not to my knowledge with the design and combined working principle which my wrench possesses.
I reserve the right to make slight changes on said described tool, but not to interfere with the working principles ofsaid tool as shown by the accompanying drawing.
1 claim:
In a wrench, a block with an opening, a plate with a screw-threaded opening at its middle portion and openings at its ends, a shank screw-threaded at one end inserted in the opening of the block, the screw-threaded end engaging the screw-threaded opening of the plate, jaws extending through the openings at the ends of the plate and pivoted to the block, means to turn the shank to vary the distance between the ends of the jaws, and means for holding the block in proper position on the shank.
HENRY J. DECKER.
