To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM SCHONFIELD, a subject of the King of England, residing at 8 Goring street, St. Mary Axe, London, England, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Opening and Closing Windows, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to apparatus for closing and opening casement windows, fanlights and the like. Hitherto this kind of apparatus has not been easily applicable to casement windows or to fanlights, and accordingly the present invention has for its object to design apparatus for these uses.
The present invention can also be en1- ployed for opening windows, doors, etc., which are hinged in a manner similar to casements and fanlights. In order to attain this object, the operating apparatus according to the present invention, when employed in connection with casement windows, has a screw arranged horizontally upon a fixed shelf in front of the window sash and passes through a nut turning about a vertical pivot carried by the fixed shelf, and is pivotally secured directly to a pair of ears fixed upon the window sash. The present invention makes. provision for operating fanlights by employing a similar screw which is inclined and screws into a nut pivoted to the fanlight sash. The screw can rotate but cannot move longitudinally owing to the method of mounting its lower end, so that when it is turned it draws the nut upon the fanlight sash downward along its length and opens the fanlight. In order to enable it to alter its angular position in accordance with the angle at which the fanlight is open, the
. screw is fitted with a ball joint in its length,
preferably at its base immediately above the fixed bracket, which prevents it from moving longitudinally.
The accompanying drawings show re spectively a construction more particularly applicable to casement windows, and a construction applied to a fanlight. These constructions are shown 'by way of example in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the lower part of a casement window with the operating apparatus attached. Fig. 2 is a section upon the line II--II of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the right-hand side of a fanlight with the operating apparatus attached,

Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, the window sash is shown of the usual kind hinged at 2 in the frame 3. On the ledge 4 immediately in front of the sash a nut 5 is carried in such a manner that it can turn about a vertical pivot 6. This nut as shown is shown of a considerable length and is internally threaded with a square thread in order to receive the operating screw 7 This latter at its free end has a wing operating end 8 adapted to be operated by hand or other means in known manner. The other end of the operating screw is pivotally connected to a pair of ears 9 by means of a stud,
pin or trunnion 10, these ears being formed in one with a plate 11 secured to the bottom bar of the window sash 1 by means of suitable screws 12. The whole fitting or apparatus can be made of brass or any other metal and in consequence of this, and its neat construction, it has quite an effective appearance. Also it is of quite a small size and weight and can be easily fitted and is very simple to operate.
In operation, upon rotating the wing 8 in either direction the casement can be opened or closed and it is locked in any position without extra apparatus; it can close the window quite tightly and prevents shaking both in the closed and open position. It will be seen that the nut 5 turns automatically to the correct angle to accommodate any position of the window and the length of the screw 7 is made such as to accommodate a considerable range of opening of the window. As shown, the extreme end of the threaded rod is not threaded, so that when the window is quite closed the nut 5 does not engage any thread of the screw 7 but, of course, if desired, the rod 7 may be threaded along its whole length.
Referring now to Figs. 3 and 4, the fanlight sash 13 turns about a horizontal hinge 1a in the frame 15 in the usual manner. The sash 13. at one side carries a plate 16 to which a pair of projecting cars 17 are fixed and this plate is secured to the window sash by suitable screws 18. A nut 20 is provided with extensions 26 by which it is pivotally mounted between the said ears 17 by pins or trunnions 19. This nut is internally I threaded to receive the operating screw 21 and this latter is provided with a ball joint 22 at its lower end fitting in a socket member 23. The whole is supported at the lower end by a bracket 24 which is bored to receive the shank of the socket 23; This shank is capable of free rotation in the bracket 24 but cannot move longitudinally therein owing to the provision of suitable collars or the like. The whole is finished with the wing 25.
The method of operation of this apparatus is as follows: Vhen the wing 25 is turned the screw 21 passes right through the nut 20 and asthe screw cannot. rise the nut 2Q is drawn down over the screw and pullsthe fanlight sash with it, so that the copies or this patent may. be obtained for five cen to lie in a plane approximately parallel with said window sash when in the closed position in said window frame and means for rotating said screw,'said nut and screw being so disposed that one is integral with 3-9 the fixed window frame and the other with the window sash.
