DISPENSING-RECEPTACLE.
Application filed July 20, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, LEE S. GHADWICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dispensing- Receptacles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved dispensing receptacle especially adapted for use in connection with devices of the class shown in my Patent No. 1,137,574, issued April 27, 1915. In the aforesaid patent there is shown a dispensing receptacle which consists of a jar or bottle having, adjacent its neck, an abutment or shoulder, the upper surface whereof is beveled or undercut to coiiperate with a supporting member for said receptacle.
It has been found impractical if not impossible to manufacture a bottle or jar having an abutment or a shoulder beveled or undercut as described.
It is the object of my present invention, therefore, to provide a dispensing receptacle having an abutment adapting it for use with dispensing devices of the general class disclosed in the aforesaid patent, and that is simple of construction and economical of production by ordinary standard methods of manufacture.
To this end the invention consists in the production of a bottle or jar, preferably of glass, having a peripheral or circumferential bead that is surrounded by an inwardly opening metallic channel member; and the side of the bead that is toward the neck or dispensing end of the bottle or jar may be disposed at substantially right angles to the vertical axis of the bottle or jar, and
of a width somewhat greater than the Width of the cooperating flange of the channel member.
The foregoing is the invention expressed in broad terms. During the following description, however, certain structural details will be introduced for accomplishing the foregoing result in a convenient, economical and facile manner, and which constitute further features of my invention.
In the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout theseveral views, Figure Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 40,845.
dispensing receptacle constructed in accord ance with my present invention; Fig. 3 is a sectional detail through one side of the upper end of the receptacle; Fig. 1 is a detail in perspective of the separated adjacent ends of the channel member or band which surrounds the dispensing receptacle; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section through the connected ends of the band or channel member.
In the present embodiment of my inven tion the dispensing receptacle or vessel consists of a cylindrical bottle or jar, preferably of glass, the game being provided with a neck 2 having in the present, case, a threaded portion 3 for the application of a suitable valve. In some uses of my dispensing device, however, a valve will be unnecessary, in which case the threaded portion 3 may be dispensed with.
Between the body portion of the receptacle or vessel and the neck 2 there is formed a shoulder 5 that is disposed at substantially right angles to the vertical axis of the receptacle. The body portion of the receptacle or vessel has a peripheral groove 6 that is spaced a slight distance from the shoulder 5.
A metallic band 10 surrounds the upper end of the body portion of the receptacle, and the same has its upper and lower edges curled over and inward to produce ridges or flanges 11 and 12, respectively. The band thus formed constitutes, in effect, an inwardly opening channel member which embraces the bead lat, between the shoulder 5 and the groove 6. The ridge or flange 12 occupies the groove 6, while the ridge or flange 11 overlies and contacts with the shoulder 5. The band is preferably made of a length substantially equal to the circumference of the receptacle or vessel, and one of its ends is provided with a tongue 15, and the other with an aperture 16 through which said tongue is arranged to extend when the band is drawn about the receptacle. After passing through the aperture 16, the tongue 15 is bent abruptly back over and upon that end of the band from which it projects, and the free end of the tongue is fastened to said end of the band preferably by applying a quantity of solder 17 thereto.
To relieve the tongue 15 of lateral strain and to assist in holding the adjacent ends 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2 a plan of a" Patented Apr. 8, 19319 i of the band in true 'alin'ein'ent, I11nay employ short wire dowel pins 18 that are -11!- serted the opposed ends of the curled over edges or flanges 11 and 120i theband.
While I have described the dispensing receptacle as cylindrical, it is obvious that the same may be rectangular in plan, or of any other desired shape, without departing from the spirit of my invention. Also, the band or-channel member 10 may be modified by altering the form of the ridges or flanges 11 and 12; and the dowel pins 18 may be dis carded without materially decreasingthe eificiency of the device.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim is A dispensing receptacle designed to be supported in inverted'position by a suitable supporting structure and comprising a body portion having a peripheral bead and a neck projecting therebeyond, and a metallic channel member having its open side disposedinwardly and surrounding the body portion and embracing the bead, the side of the channel member toward the neck receding inward away from the neck thereby lcolproduce a confined supporting shoulder or ec ge.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto afiix' my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
