Application filed November 12, 1917. Serial No. 201,604.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns T. LACKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Marion, State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Turbine-Pump for Irrigation; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
, This invention relates to an improved turbine suction or lifting pump, and one of the objects of the invention is the provision of an improved pump of this kind especially adapted for lifting or drawing water from a well or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved lifting pump of this kind for lifting the water, and discharging the same whereby extensive irrigation of the land surrounding the pump may be accomplished.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a pump having a vertically disposed revoluble tubular member having a chamber at its upper end provided with radial tubular outlets, whereby, upon rotating said member and owing to the centrifugal force of the water as it is thrown from said tubular outlets, the water in the well 'or the like is lifted or drawn therefrom through said tubular member.
I A further object of the invention is the provision of a centrifugal pump, the tubular outlets of which are provided at their extremities with controlling valves for the water, in combination with spring tensioned weights guided upon the tubular outlet, said weights being adapted to fly outwardly due to the centrifugal force as the tubular member rot-ates, thereby opening said valves which are spring tensioned.
In practical fields the details of construce tion may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the improved pump constructed in accordance with the invention.

Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates a frame, which comprises the inclined upright 2 and the horizontal brace 3, which is located near the lower ends of the inclined standards 2, and 4 denotes a plat form, which is disposed over the'top of the well hole or the like. The upper ends of the standards 2 are connected in any suitable manner to the plate 5, and the lower sheet or wall 6 of the water receiving casing 7 is secured by the screws or bolts 8 to said plate 5. A plate 9 is also secured by the screws or bolts 8 to the upper inner surface of the sheet or wall 6 of the casing 7. This plate 9 is provided with a race way 10 for the reception ofthe anti-frictional ball bearings 11. By means of screws 12 a plate 13 is secured to the platform 4. The plate 13 has a raceway 14 for the anti-frictional ball bearing 15. A revoluble tubular member 16, which passes through suitable openings 17 of the plates 5 and 9 and the wall 6, and through openings 18 of the platform 4 and the plate 13 is provided. The upper end of the revoluble tubular member 16 terminates integrally in the centrifugal casing 19, which is providedwith partitions or blades 20, thereby dividing said casing into centrifugal water chambers 21 and 22.1 In Fig. 4 the partition, 20 is eliminated, so that in this case after the chamber 21 has been primed, the water will by centrifugal force be passed out through the tubes or arms 47, thereby insuring a suction in the tubular member 16, suflicient to elevate the water which will be accomplished substantially equally as well as when the blade or partition 20 is employed. These partitions or blades have been found somewhat beneficial, in acting on the water drawn into said chambers and tending tov help the water in its centrifugal flow out through the radial tube. However, the blades or partitions may be increased or decreased in number, or if desired may be dis pensed with entirely, since it has been found that the apparatus will operate with or with out the blades. Adjacent where the tubular member 16 joins the casing 19 a boss 23 is formed having a race-way 24, between which and the race-way the anti-frictional ball bearings 11 are interposed; The revoluble tubular member 16 at a suitable location near the. platformet is provided with an annular collar or boss 25 having a race-way 26, between which and the race-way 14 said ball bearings .15 engage. By means of the ball bearings 11 and" the tubular member may freely rotated withminimum friction, By means of the collar 27 which is secured to the tubular member'l6 below; the platform 4 by the set screw 27, upward movement of said; tubular member is prevented, during its revoluble movement." A grooved pulley 29 is adjust-ably secured on the tubular member 16, by means of the set screw or bolt30. A
conventional form or motor 31 is mounted upon the platform. 4, and its drive 32 has a. pulley33, which is belted to the pulley 29 by means'ofthe belt34, for imparting revoluble movement to the perpendicular tubular{member-"16. An arm '35 extends downwardly from the brace 3, and pivoted at on said arm is'a lever 37. The lever is providedwithavalve 38 (which is designed, to open and close the lower ends of the tubular member) and connected to the end 37 of said leveris alinkj39. The upper end of the link 39 isconnected to a lever40 pivoted at 41 to one of the standards 2. Said lever 40 has a rib. 42, and by grasping the handle 43 of said lever, the lever 40 may be adjusted or swung downwardly to open said valve 38. The valve 38 may be held indifferent open I positions by therib 42 engaging between any two of the teeth 44 onone of the standards 2 of the frame. The casing 19 is provided with a tubular filling opening 45, and by removing the plug 46 the water chambers 21 and 22 may beifilled. Extending radially from diametrically opposite parts of the casing 19 are tubular water outlet arms 47 and '48, which are braced or reinforced rela tive to the casing 19 by means of the ribs 49. As many tubular water outlet arms as de- 4 sired may be provided. For instance four of such 'arms may be used, two at right angles to the others, or six or eight may be employed. However, if the'blades or partitions 20 are used, there should be as many blades as there are tubular arms and vice versa.
Also should the blades or partitions be employed they shouldextend radially fromv adjacent the tubular arms, or from adjacent one side where the tubulararms join the casing 19. However, the device is not to be limited to any particular construction in this or. other regards. Near the outer ends of the arms 47 and 48 are collars 50 provided with later'al arms 51, on which the levers 52 and I. 53 are pivotallymounted as at 54. Each levercarries a valve 55. These valves are designed to coiiperate with the outer ends of the tubular arms 47 and 48 respectively. Said levers 52 and 53 have a plurality of perforations 56. A cable 57 has one end secured in any one of the perforations 56 of each lever 52 and 53. The other end of said cable 57 is connected to an eye 59 of a weight 60. These tubular weights 60 are slidably, movable on the arms 47 and 48. Pivoted at 61 to the valve 55 are links 62 and 63. The valves 55 are provided with rubber insert members 55, to engage the outer end edges of the tubular arms 47, to insure a tight fit of the valves on the arms. These insert blocks may be constructedof any other suitable material other than rubber, however, rubber is preferred. A spring 64 has one end secured at 65 to the link 62, and its other end is provided with a short cable 64?, which in turn is connected to an eye 66 of a tubular arm 48. A second spring 67 is connected to the link 63 as at 68. A short cable 67 is connected to the spring 67, and in turn is connected to an eye 69 of the tubular arm 48. The casing 7 has its upper portion open and is provided with an inturned annular flange 70. The lower wall 6 of said casing 7 has an outlet opening 71. In starting the turbine pump, it is first primed, by filling the chambers 21 and 22. Revoluble motion is then imparted to the tubular member 16, by means of the motor 31, and since the casing 19 and the tubular arms 47 and 48 are carried by the tubular member 16, such parts likewise move. Prior to imparting movement to the tubular member 16 the valve 38 (which has a rubber insert disk 72 to make a close fit or joint with the lower end of the tubular member) is first opened. As the speed of the tubular member 16 and its cass ing 19 increases, the weights 60 move outwardly on the arms 47 and 48 through cen-. trifugal force, thereby pulling upon the cables 57 and consequently opening the valves 55 against the action of their springs 64 and 67. The action of the springs 64 and 67 on said valves 55, according to. the different heights of the water may be overcome by increasing or decreasing the pulling leverage on the levers 52 and 53. For instance by connecting the cable 57 very near the pivot of the lever 52, considerable centrifugal force of the weight 60 is required to overcome the closing effect of the valve 55, and by moving the cable 57 farther through the outer end of or. from the pivot 54 of the lever 52 less centrifugal force of the weight 60 is required to open the valve. Theseadjustments are made, according to the height A ous passing of the water through the arms, sufficient suction is created in the tubular member 16, whereby the Water in the well or the like may be lifted or drawn upwardly through the member 16. When drawn into the casing 19 the water is discharged through the tubular arms 47 and 48, (which may be increased or decreased in number) into the casing 7 from which it passes through the opening 71. There may be any number of openings 71 as desired, but for illustrative purposes only one is shown, and to this opening or others that may be provided suitable means, such as hose or other suitable conduits may be connected for conveying the, water to the surrounding land for irrigation purposes. The water may be conveyed in this manner to any suitable location for consumption otherwise.
The invention having been set forth What is claimed as new and useful is:-
1. In a turbine lifting pump, a frame, a casing mounted on the top of the frame, a revoluble tubular member mounted in bearings of said frame and adapted to have its lower end submerged in water and having its upper end provided with a casing rotatable in the first casing, the second casing having a pair of water chambers and provided with diametrically oppositely radial tubular arms through which the water from the chambers centrifugally pass, pivoted valves for the outer ends of said tubular arms, spring tensioning means for said valves, members slidably mounted on said arms and adapted to move outwardly by centrifugal force, and means connecting said Copies of this patent may be obtained for slidable members and the valves to open the sitely disposed radial tubular arms in communication with said chamber, whereby, through centrifugal force, water may pass out through the arms, members slidable on said arms and adapted to be thrown outwardly by centrifugal force, levers pivotally mounted on the outer extremities of the arms and provided with valves for the outer ends of said arms, a link pivoted to each valve, a spring connecting said link and the opposite arm, means connecting said levers and the slidable members of the arms, whereby as the slidable members move outwardly through centrifugal force, said valves automatically open, and a manually manipulated valve for the lower end of the tubular revoluble member.
