Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1,31919;
Application filed September 28, 1918 Serial N 0. 256,040.
To all wham it may concern .f
Be it known that 1,,FREDDIEJ. Born, a citizen of the. United States, residing at Gary, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented newand useful Im-, provements in Beds, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to furniture.
The improvement has reference to a baby bed designed to be attached toand supported from an ordinary bed and which,when not in use may be foldedand swung beneath the bed without detachment therefrom.
It is a further object of the invention to produce anrarticle of furniture .of this class that shall be of a comparatively simple con: struction, easily attached to or removed from an ordinary sleeping bed, securely supported thereby when in its set up condition,
readily folded, effectively held in such folded condition, and easily swung and sustained beneath the main bed when not in use,
Other objects and advantages will present themselves as the nature of theinventlon is better understood, reference being had to."
the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the improvement in its set-up position and arranged upon an ordinary bedstead;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the baby bed in its folded condition;
Fig. 3 is a section-a1 view taken in a line with one of the supports for the baby bed;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view in a line with thesupporting leg and showing the means for securing the side to the ends of the baby bed, when the latter is in its folded condition;
Fig. 5 is a plan view showing the arrangement of parts when the baby bed has been swung to an inverted position and about to be moved under the main bed;
Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the supporting means between the main bed and the baby bed; and
Fig. 7 is a detail elevation illustrating the manner in which the arm may be pivotally connected to the foot roll.
Referring now to the drawings in detail the numeral 7 designates an ordinary bedstead which, in the showing of the drawing is constructed of metal. The side rails 8 of the bedstead 7 are of the usual angle irons.
To theanglerail 8 on one of the-sides of the bedstead I attach brackets which are indicated by the numerals 9. Each of these brackets is inthe; nature of. ametallic strap havlng one of. its ends bent to provide what may be termeda hook, which.is indicated I by the numeral'lO. The beak-of the hook is.
arranged parallel with and below the strap proper, and this hook portion is adapted to be arranged on the angle side 8 of the bedstead 7, as clearly illustrated by the drawings. The strap, at -a.suitable distance inward ofthe bead of the hook 10 is provided with a right angular depending portion 12 terminating in an outwardly eXtendingportion 13, which portion, for the sake. of convenience I will, hereinafter ,r efereto as an ear. It is to be noted that two of the brackets 9 are employed, the. same being suitably, spaced one from the other, and on the ear of each of the brackets is; pivotally secured, as at 14, an arm 15... Preferably. the arm is constructed of metal and'isap-Q proximately centrally bent or twisted upon itself. so that the outer portionthereof.will
25, a foldable side 26. To the ends 24 are hingedly secured, as at 27 foldable end extensions 28. The side of the baby crib proper to which the foldable side 26 is hingedly secured, is elevated a slight but suitable distance above the ends of the baby bed proper to which the foldable ends 28 are attached. By this arrangement the foldable 'ends 281118.37 be swung inwardly of the baby bed pro-per so that the inner stiles or posts thereof will rest upon the upper edge of the inner side of the baby bed, which is disposed a suitable distance below the outer side of the said baby bed. Thereafter the foldable side 26 may be swung over the ends 28. The top rail of the foldable side 26 is provided with a suitable catch 80 that enga es with one of the end members of the ha y bed. On the bottom rail of the outer side Ofthe baby bed is hingedly secured a supporting leg 32, and suitable means may be provided for holding the said leg in supporting position and when folded against the bottom of the baby bed. In addition to this means may be provided between the side rail 8 of the bedstead 7 and the ends. of the baby bed for holding the baby bed'against swinging in a longitudinal direction with respect to the bedstead 7 When the baby bed is to be arranged beneath the bedstead the foldable sides and ends thereof are swung as previously described. The supporting leg 32 is folded. The baby bed is then swung to an inverted position so that the bottom thereof will be uppermost. The baby bed is then moved l g tudinally of the bedstead 7, causing the arms 15 to turn upon their pivots 1 L andv as a consequence permits of the baby bed being arranged entirely beneath the bed stead 7.
It is believed from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings that the simplicity and advantages of the construction will be apparent without further detailed description.
32 illustrates the second leg hingedly se cured as at 32, if it is needed for more suitable support of the bed'when in upright position.
Copies. of this patent may be obtained for Having thus described the invention, what is clalme as new, is 1. In combination with an elevated sup port comprising an angle iron, of angle brackets, having one of their ends hooked, arranged on said angle iron, said brackets having the lower ends offset outwardly and arranged below the lower edge of the-an le iron, centrally twisted arms, one pivotal ly connected to each of the said extensions of the said brackets, a member pivotally se cured to the outer end of each of said arms, a collapsible baby bedstead, straps on the lower ends thereof swiveled to the referred to pivoted members, and a swinging leg for the outer side of the baby bedstead, all as and for the urpose set forth.
2. In com ination with an elevated sup-- FREDDIE J. BOYD.
