HENRYC. OVERIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
UMBRELLA-LOOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4:, 1919.
Application filed May 2, 1918. Serial N 0. 232,173.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. OVERIN, a cltlzen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Umbrella-Loop, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
This invention relates to. an attachment for umbrellas, canes and the like, and has for an object the provision of an improved construction which may be used as a loop for supporting an article to which it is secured on the wrist or by the hand in an easy manner.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a loop formed with an encircling band for clamping the loop to an article.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a band formed with slots and a loop held adjustably against one side of an article for clamping the loop so as to straddle the article.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a loop disclosing an embodiment of the invention, the same being shown applied.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to- Fig. 1, but showing the loop in a modified position.
Fig. 3 is'a section through Fig. 1 on line 33.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the body of the loop.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the clamping band of the loop.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates the handle of an umbrella, cane, or swagger stick and 2 the body of the loop. 3 indicates the clamping band forming part of the loop. The body 2 is formed with slots 1 and 5 at one end and also slots 6 and 7 at the opposite end through which the clamping band 8 is adapted to be threaded as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, where the band acts to clamp the body 2 on umbrella handle 1 in a straddling position. A
lacing member 8 is passed through the various openings 9 causing the "clamping action of the strap 3. This arrangementwill allow the loop to be properly secured to handles of different sizes and will allow the ready removal or the ready application thereof at any time. This is of advantage especially on umbrella handles where ordinarily the loop must be placed in position before the handle is fastened in position. By providing the lacing 8 and clamping strap 3 the loops need not be placed in position until the particular umbrella is purchased and then the particular loop desired by the purchaser may be applied thereto.
It will be observed that the unfinished side of strap 3 and also the unfinished side of part of the body 2 is pressed against the handle 1 so that there will be no slipping.
In Fig. .3 a slightly different arrangement is shown wherein the strap 3 is threaded through loops a and 6 and then through loops 5 and 7 whereby the loop 2 will be on one side of the handle 1 while the strap 8 will surround the handle and be secured in position by the lacing member 8.
What I claim is:
1. A loop of the character described comprising a body adapted to be bent double forming a loop structure, the ends of said body having a plurality of apertures, a clamping strap adapted to be threaded through said apertures, and means acting as a clamping member for causing the same to grip an object.
2. A loop of the character described comprising a body which may be bent as a loop structure, said body having a pair of slots at each end extending longitudinally of the body, a clamping strap adapted to be threaded through said slots, and a lacing member for connecting the ends of said clamping strap, whereby the clamping strap may grip articles of difi erent sizes.
HENRY C. OVERIN.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents. Washington, 11.0."
