Description
H. DU ELL, JR: HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 16, 1914. 1,287,921 Patented Dec. 17, 1918 WITNESSES CHARLES H. DUELL, J 3., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1918.
Application filed November 16, 1914. Serial No. 872,337.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLns H. DUELL, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to holders or the like, and with regard to certain more specific features thereof, to combination match and ash holders and the like, comprising advertising means.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a simple, practical and durable combination match holder and tray against fire.
It is another object of the invention to 7 provide means for effectively holding a device of the above-mentioned character while subjecting the same to the application of exterior force for the purpose of striking a match or for the purpose of withdrawing one or more of the advertising sheets against the action of a substantially strong spring, or for other purposes.
Still another object of the invention lies in the provision ofprotected chambers or compartments for normally storing the advertising sheets which may be frail and highly inflammable in combination with a common support and receptacle for matches, lighted cigars, cigarettes, hot ashes, etc.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claim.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown one of various possible embodiments of the invention and wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts in the several views of the drawing,
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a holder embodying features of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of a fragment of the holder shown in Fig. 1, with portlons broken away to show more clearly the interior structure;
Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the bracket which supports a member to which is attached one of the advertising or display sheets; and
Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of the pivotally mounted member to which one end of the flexible display sheet is attached. A portion of the member is broken away to show more clearly the interior mechanism.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a tray forming a base merging at or near its center into a standard 2, which in turn develops into a bifurcated holding member 3, which may be provided with transverse straps 4. This holding member 3 is adapted to receive matches preferably contained in a box as indicated at 5. The transverse straps 4 serve to hold the box 5 against movement in one direction, and walls 6 and 7 formed by the bifurcation of the holder 3 serve to prevent movement of the box in the opposite direction. The holder 3 is open at the top and the box 5 may he slipped in and out of the holder in this direction at the will of the operator. If desired, the box may be of the so-called safety type, provided with means along one edge or one side, as indicated at 8, whereby the matches may be struck. The holder 3, in addition to being formed with the walls 6 and 7, is provided with exterior casing members 9 and 10, abutting and respectively cooperating with the walls 6 and 7 to form protected chambers or compartments 11 adapted to contain one or more rollers 12 pivotally mounted on brackets 13, the longitudinal axes of said rollers being disposed in planes parallel to the bottom of said base and horizontal centrally a substantial distance within the horizontal dimension of said basel Each roller 12 has connected thereto one end of a flexible display sheet 14, and the opposite free end of this sheet is provided with a handle as indicated at 15, whereby the operator may grip the free end to withdraw the sheet from the chamber. The bracket 13 is provided at one end with a bifurcated clip 16 adapted to receive a round pin 17 of the roller 12. The bracket 13 is formed at its opposite end with a similarly bifurcated clip 18 adapted to receive the angular projection 19, which is connected to a stem 20, which in turn is mounted for rotation in one end of the roller 12 and which connects with one end of a coil spring 21, the other end of which is fixed to the interior of the roll .12 as indicated at 22. It will be apparent that when the roller 12 and the bracket 18 are assembled, the angular member 19 will be held against rotary movement by the clip 18, while the roller 12 is free to turn on the pin 17 supported by the clip '16, and that as the roller 12 is turned in one direction when assembled the spring 21 is progressively tensioned. lVhen, after being turned, the roller 12 is released, the spring 21 restores it immediately to normal position. Casing members 9 and 10 are provided. with openings 23, preferably in the form of very narrow slots sutiicient only to permit suitable movement of the flexible display sheets let therethrough. The member, indicated at 15, which is designed for the operator to grasp to withdraw the display sheets against the action of the spring 21, is preferably so formed and constructed as to substantially close its respective opening 23 in the casings, thereby substantially confining the flexible sheet 1 1 within the chamber formed by said casing. By this construction the advertising matter is en tirely inclosed and protected from fire. The tray 1 may, as indicated, be formed in a similar fashion to the holder 3, the side walls of the tray being in the form of casings providing chambers for display slips as indicated at 24. This tray 1 and the standard 2, which may be integral therewith, preferably comprise a heavy and ell balanced support for the match-holder, whereby matches may be struck against the side of the box 5 or any one of a number of the sheets 14: may be drawn out against the action of their springs, or both of these things may be done at the same time, without disturbing or upsetting the device.
From the foregoing, it will be obvious that a device is provided which accomplishes,
among others, all of the objects and advantages hereinbefore set forth.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this inven tion could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shownin the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A holder of the character described comprising, in combination, a standard and a base, the standard comprising hollow slotted walls, spring rollers mounted within said walls, sheets connected to said rollers, extending through said slots and adapted to be wound on said rollers through the energy of the springs thereof, handles connected to said rollers eXteriorly of said walls and adapted to close said slots when said sheets are wound on said rollers, the longitudinal axes of said rollers being disposed in planes parallel to the bottom of said base, and longitudinally centrally a substantial distance within the horizontal dimension of said base whereby said base exerts a substantial resistance to being overturned by an outward pull on said handles in displaying said sheets.
in testimony whereof I afliX my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
