APPLICATION FILED 11:50.3.1911.
1,286,771 Patented Dec. 3, 1.918.
REUBEN EAYMONID, F NAPA, CALIFORNIA.
COMBQNATION GLOVE AND MITTEN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December a, 1917. Serial No. 205,177.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN RAYMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Naps, in the county of Napa and State of 1 California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Gloves and Mittens, of which the following is a, specification.
This invention relates to a combination glove and mitten and particularly to a construction especially adapted for use by avia tors or motorists wherein a complete glove is provided with an attached mitt arranged to entirely inclose the glove fingers.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction of glove having a mitt pocket secured upon the back thereof at the base of the glove fingers and adapted to be drawn thereover to completely inolose andprotect the linger members of the glove and the palm portion adjacent thereto.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of the mitt pocket having a foldable gore to permit its easy passage over the glove fingers and means to secure said gore in folded position when the pocket incloses the fingers. Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation of the glove With the mitt iuclosing the fingers;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation with the mitt removed from the fingers;
Fig. i is a detail cross section through the mitt pocket;
Fig, 5 is a detail edge view'showing the gore in the pocket, and
Fig, 6 is a detail of the adptstable wrist and gauntlet strap.
Like numerals refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing. 7
The numeral 10 designates a glove which may be of any desired construction preferably such shown in my Patent No. 905,365, dated December 1, 1908, and having the finger members 11 and thumb mpmber 12. This glove is also provided with a gauntlet portion 13 adapted to be fitted tight about the arm of the wearer by an adjustable strap lat which extends from a tab 15 on one side of the glove through a loop 16 carried by a tab 17 at the opposite side thereof. The free end of thestrap is provided with a clasp member 18 adapted to engage a cooperating member 19 carried by a slotted plate 20 through which the strap is passed so that the plate may be adjusted thereon to secure any desired fit of the gauntlet portion. See Fig. 6.
The mitt pocket 21 is permanently secured at the back of the glove below the base of the finger members by stitching 22 or otherwise. The front of this pocket is formed with a palm extension 23 partially covering the palm of the hand and having a cut-out edge 2t to fit around the crotch of the thumb member 12. The pocket is lined With any desired material to provide additional protection against cold, for instance, fur as indicated at 25.
At the opposite side from the thumb an unlined foldable gore or inset 26 is stitched to the back and front edges of the pocket at 27 and is formed of sufficient size to permit the easy passage of the pocket over the glove fingers. This gore or inset may be of any desired shape, preferably of a substantially triangular configuration as herein shown. In order to retain the pocket in its position inclosing the fingers and also the gore folded over upon the back of the pocket, a strap 28 is stitched to. the pocket at one side of the gore, as at 29, and provided-with a clasp member 30 adapted to engage a cooperating member 31 disposed upon the backof the pocket.
Upon the backof the glove an adjustable Wrist strap 32 is located and is of substantially the same construction as the strap 14: upon the gauntlet, being secured at one end 33 to the glove and having its free end passing through a loop 34 and provided with a clasp member 35 engaging a cooperating member on the body of the strap.
In the use of the invention the glove may be applied with the mitt pocket in position to completely inclose and protect both the,
Patented Dec. 3, 1918.
back and front of the fingers and also the palm of the hand against extremes of temperature while allowing a freedom of movement of the fingers from the knuckle ]o1nts and wrists in the handling of any controlling mechanism. When it is desired to use the gloved fingers the retaining strap for the pocket is released and the fingers bent partially toward the palm when the gore permits the mitt to be easily drawn backward over the fingers so that it will be susp ended at the back of the glove, as shown in Fig. 3, ready to be again replaced over the fingers when desired. The formation of the mitt pocket closed at the finger tips and each side thereof with the palm portion cutout at the thumb crotch provides a completely inclo sing supplemental protection .for the sensitive members of the hand at this portion of the glove. The arrangement of the adjustable wrist and gauntlet straps allows the glove to be snugly fitted at those points for the confort and convenience of the wearer. I
The invention is particularly adapted for use by aviators as the extremely low temperature at high altitudes requires special protection for the hand and fingers to prevent the same becoming numb which can be readily and quickly removed when it is necessary to use the gloved fingers in action or in the control of an aeroplane. The invention is also very useful for motorists or others where the hands must be used in exposed positions as it avoids removing the glove covering from the fingers under any condition Where they must be used and provides additional protection When the use of the fingers are not needed thus retaining them in condition for immediate use when required.
