METALLIC-REINFORCED IPIGKIEIR. FOR LOOMS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented Nov. 5,
Application inea' August 9, 1917. serial No. 185,315.
To all whom it may concern Be it lmown that I, ARTHUR M. HAMIL- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing The ob]ect of my invention is to provide for effectively reinforcing 4'and strengthening a picker at the facewh re it receives the most wear by repeated b ws upon the nose of a shuttle. This reinforcement is effected by means of a strip or plate of metal a central bent into U shape and havin opening at the striking face o the picker and being rigidly secured in place byfrivets which pass through the folds and tongue of the picker and through holes in the side around the'picker stick, except that it did 5 vide a metal plate of'a construction' espef portions of the plate which lie between plies of leather forming the picker.
Heretoforeit has been proposed to prov'ide astrip of metal formed with recesses or notches-at itsA ends' and cut away at its. opposite longitudinal edges toward the mid' dle portion, where it was much narrowed4 or reduced. This strip, not being fastened by rivets was capable of'suiicient longitudinalmovement to permit the leather at the back of the picker to stretch under the action of the picker stick.
lThis stripfenciroled the eye' and passed not cover the front of the' picker. The object of this device'was to give rigidity to the sides of the picker and to protect the-picker stick. My object is to reinforce the strik ing face of the picker and prevent the 4folds ofleather from spreading and breaking out by the oft repeated-blows upon thepointed" end of the shuttle, and to this 'end I procially adaptedl to the purpose.'
The matter constituting my invention will be defined in the claim. o I will now describe the details of construetion of my improved picker by reference tothe accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 represents a| side elevation of a Y picker.
Aand the two sides f Fig. 3 represents a plan view of the blank reinforcing plate.
Fig., 4 represents a side view of the plate bent into U shape.
Fig. 5 represents a front face view thereof.
The picker A is constructed of plies or l folds of `thick leather or raw hide vin a known manner, being formed of an inner a and an outer ply a', inclosing a tongue 1y g, composed of two layers or folds of leather. This construction provides an eye c for a picker stick. The inner and outer folds of vleather and the tongueare pro# vided with holes through which are passed rivets e for-securely holding the parts together.
In constructing my improved picker I provide a metal plate F shown -as a fiat blank in Fig. 3. Centrally in this plate is cut out a part of the metal, forming opening f which will be substantially the width of the front lface d of the picker and of a little greater height than width, as
shown. This opening provides vupper andV lower bands g, g', connecting the opposite side portions f of the plate forgiving-,the
desired strength.` Rivet holes w, two in each side portion f' are also punched in the flat vblank. The plate vF is bent into a. U Shape forming a front containing the opening f containing t e rivet holes 02. In 'making up the pickerithe U shaped reinforcing plate is inserted between openingf shall be at the front of the picker, aS ShOWIlin Fig. 2.' The folds of the leather and the U-shaped` metal plate having been assembled around the tongue BIL -the inner fold L- and outer folda of leather adjacent to the tongue b, so that the front rivets-e4 are inserted through the folds, the y andsecuredl by`clenchin in the usual manner-,thereby binding an rigidlyholding thel reinforcing plate in position, lso as, to'prevent any ngitudinal or other movement;
vents the tongue and'holes 'm in the sidesz of the plate.

shuttle. 'The vdurability and life of the l picker are thus greatly increased.'` The provision of opening f in the`front of plate F Fig. 2 represents a horizontal transversel section on line 2 2, Fig. 1.
is necessary in order to' prevent .the end of iio.
when it has worn an opening or socket in the outer ply a of thepicker leather. The upper and lower bands g, g hold the sides together and prevent the plies of leather from being spread and broken out by iinpact upon the pointed 'end of the shuttle. The operation of riveting the folds compresses and firmlyl binds the sides of the metallic plate against the inner folds and the tongue so as to prevent spreading and breaking out of the folds due to the blows of the picker upon the end of the shuttle. I have demonstrated by practical tests that the durability and eiiciency of thismetallic reinforced picker are increased and that its life is four times that of the ordinary picker made of leather without reinforcing means.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a picker for looms, the combination with the folds of material, of a U-shaped metal plate extending at the sides and front of 'the tongue and having an opening in the front of the striking face of the picker, said opening being of a width corresponding to the width of the front face of the picker and of a height slightly greater than the width thereof, top and bottom straps connecting the side portions, and rivets passing through the folds of the tongue and the sides of the plate whereby the folds of picker material will be bound together and reinforced and prevented from spreading and breaking out by impact of the picker upon the end of a shuttle.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR MCARTHUR HAMILTON. Witnesses:
