c Zfw wcit aa6mm:
Be it known that I, Louis Dnus n, a citizen efthe United States, residing at New orrNews, in the county of Warwick and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Condiment- Shakers, of whichthe following is a specification.
This, invention. relatesv to. an. improved condiment shaker, for use for shakingpepper and salt, or other condiments, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which is simple in construction, which may be readily manufactured at a small cost, and which enables either pepper or salt to be obtained as may be desired. I
The invention consists in the construction combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of a condiment shaker constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
Figs. 3 and i are detailed views.
The body 1 of the condiment shaker may be of the form here shown or of any other siutable form and is provided with compartments 2, 3 for the reception of salt and pepper or other condiment. The body is also formed with a neck 4: and a partition 5 which separates the compartments of the body extends to the upper end of the neck and is provided in its upper end with a groove 6, which extends entirely across the neck of the body. A stud 7 is formed on the outer sides of the neck at a suitable distance from the upper end thereof and in a line with the partition.
A cap 8 is detachably fitted on the neck of the body and has a cylindrical portion 9 which fits around the neck of the body, said cylindrical portion being here shown as provided with a tongue 10 and the said tongue having a groove 11 on its inner side which is adapted to be engaged by the stud 7 to cause the cap to be held in the required position on the neck of the body and so that the flange 12 which extends across the inner side and at the center of the cap may engage in the groove 6 of the partition and thereby efiect a tight joint between the partition and the cap and prevent the salt and thepepper from mixing. The cap is provided with suitable perforations through which the salt which engage in bayonet slots sides of the cap, said lugs and LOUIS nnusxrnfl or nnwroqar nnws, vmemre,

and pepper pass as the same are shaken out. A valve disk 13 is mounted for turning movement on the outer side of the capandis centered and held thereon by a. pivot 14. Said valve disk has perforations which may be'causedto register either with the perforations in thesalt portion of the cap or those in the pepper portion thereof. The disk is" provided at opposite sides; with, lugs. 16 17 in opposite bayonet slots coacting to hold the cap and the disk close together and at the same time permit the disk to be freely turned as required on the cap to permit either salt or pepper to be obtained as may be desired. At one side of the disk is an arm 17 which is provided with a slot 18.
The cylindrical portion 9 of the cap is provided with a pair of spaced ears 19. A rock shaft 20 is mounted in bearing openings in the ear and is provided at its upper end with a crank 21 the end 22 of which engages in the slot 18. At the lower end of the shaft is a finger piece 23 to enable the shaft to be turned in one direction against the tension of a spring 24. The said spring normally causes the rock shaft and the c0nnections hereinbefore described to hold the disk with its perforations in register with the perforations in the salt side of the cap, so that under ordinary conditions the salt may be obtained and without the necessity of operating the crank shaft or the disk.
lVhen it is desired to obtain pepper, the user, when grasping the shaker, 21150 with his thumb or a finger presses on the finger piece 23 and causes the rock shaft to turn slightly and against the tension of the springs 24 and thus causes the crank 21 to move the disk so as to cause its perforations to register with the perforations in the pepper side of the cap. When the disk is in such position the finger piece bears directly against the cylindrical portion of the cap, where it may be readily held. As soon as the finger piece is relieved of the pressure of the thumb or finger the spring returns the rock shaft to its initial position and in so doing causes the valve disk to re-assume its normal position with its perforations in register with those of the salt side of the cap.
The finger piece is detachably secured to the shaft and may be removed therefrom to While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention I Would have it understood that such changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention I claim p i A condiment holder and shaker comprising a body having compartments andalso having a neck, a cap having a cylindrical portion detachably fitted aroundthe neck, said cap and the partition between the comp'artments having means to effect a tight joint therebetween, and also having means Copies of this patent may be obtained for to position the cap on the neck, said cap having perforations and the tubular portion of the cap being provided with a pair of outstanding spaced ears, a disk pivotally mounted on the outer side and provided with perforations, the disk being also provided with an arm having a slot, a rock shaft mounted in bearings in the ear and provided with a crank, the end of which engages in said slot, a finger pieceattached to the rock shaft, and a spring acting on the rock shaft to normally hold the, disk in a predetermined position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
