UNITED sTATEs- PATENT oFFioE.
ALEX SHOLUND, 0F MARYSVILLE, WASHINGTON.
FENCE-POST.
Application led May 14, 1918.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALEX SHOLUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marysville, in the county of Snohomish and State of lashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fence posts and' it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a metal post of simple and durable structure adapted to be driven in the ground and having a base flange adapted to limit the extent to which it is forced into the ground. One end of the body of the post is pointed and adapted to enter the ground and the opposite end thereof is closed whereby the body which `is .hollow may be readily driven or forced into the ground.
The body is ,provided at intervals along its length with outstanding ears 5 under which recesses are provided the said recesses being adapted to receive line Wires. The body is further provided above the said rocesses with lugs and a ring or a series of rings may be applied tothe body. Each ring is provided at its inner side with a' transversely disposed groove adapted to pass over the lugs and ears when the ring is slipped from the upper to the lower portion of the post. Each ring is provided at its interior surface with a spiral groove one end of which communicates with the said transversely disposed groove and the other end is closed. The said spiral groove is adapted to receive the lug 6 when the ring is turned whereby the lower edge of the ring may be forced into the ground into close contact with the u per end of the adjacent ear and consequent y the wire which is in the recess under the ear is securely retained therein.l
In the accompanying drawing z- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the fence post.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 24, 1918.
serial No. 234.446.
The post comprises an elongated body l which 1s hollow and closed and pointed at one end as at 2 and closed at its upper end as at 3. The said body 1 is provided at a point between its end `with an outstanding annular flange 4 adapted to come in contact with the surface of the ground when the pointed end of the body is driven therein.
The said body is further provided at intervals along its length with outstandin ears 5 under each of which there is provide a transversely disposed recess 7. Lugs are located at one side of the body 1 above the recesses 7 and are spaced from the upper ends of the ears 5.
lilac-h body `l is adapted to be provided with a series of rings 8 and the said rings may slide along the body. Each ring is provided at its interior with a transversely disposed groove 9 and the said groove may slip over the ears and lugs 6 when the ring is being passed from an upper portion of the body to 'a lower portion thereof. Each ring S is further provided at. its interior sur# face with a spiral groove 10 one end of which communicates with one end portion of the `groove 9 and the opposite end of the groove 10 is closed as at 11 and terminates short of the side of the groove 9.
lVhen the post is driven in position in the ground-the line wiresof a fence fabric may be placed in the recesses 7. Consequently the fence fabric is supported by the post. Thon each ring 8 is moved down so that the adjacent lug 6 is received in the lower portion of the groove 9. 4The ringS is then turned whereby the lu 6 moves along the groovelO and inasmuc as the said groove` 10 is spirally disposed the ring will be forced down in close contact with the upper end'bf the adjacent ear 5 and consequently the line wire is securely retained in place in the adjacent recess 7. To release the wire and 4 for eectually retaining the line wires of n fence fabric in position thereon.
Having` described the invention what is claimed is A fence post, :1 body, an ear provided thereon and having a recess located under the same, a 111g located above the recess und ear, a ring slidably mounted on the body :md having a transversely disposed groove adapted to ass over the ear and 111g and 10 provided with a spiral groove adapted to receive the lug when the ring is turned.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ALEX SHOLUND.
